Who is Captain America?  If you are a superhero fan or have one in your life then you more than likely know something about good old Captain.  He has been around since the early 1940’s thanks to Marvel comics.  You can learn more about him here.

I decided to add his shield logo as an over-sized applique to a hat when designing this hat in the superhero hat collection I designed for my nephews. I like how it turned out so here is the pattern if you want to make it as well.

I would say this project is for advanced beginners and up do to color changes and star shape but it is definitely doable even for a first time hat maker. Enjoy!

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Hat Base:
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice in colored yarn
Now you want to add the pretty red contrast trim to the bottom of the hat to play off the red, white and blue aspect of Captain America.  Attach the red yarn to where you left off when finishing main beanie with a sl st. Ch 1 and place 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in top of 1st st in round and fasten off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start your own Captain America Superhero shield logo inspired hat for the superhero fan in your life. :)

Logo circle Base: using dark blue, red and white yarn
Round 1: Using dark blue yarn to start off in a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in the round. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1 st, *1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st* repeating * around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. Fasten off dark blue yarn. (36 dc)
Round 4: Attach your red yarn where you left off in previous round with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1 st, *1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in following st* repeating * around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (48 sc)
Leave a long enough tail that you will be able to secure the assembled logo during finishing off steps on to the beanie hat when sewing on before you cut the yarn and pull it through. Place logo circle to side for now.

*This size logo will fit on toddler through adult sized hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: Using dark blue yarn to start off in a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (10 hdc)

Round 4: Attach your red yarn where you left off in previous round with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1 st, *1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in following st* repeating * around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (40 sc)

Logo Star: using white yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in circle. Pull circle closed and s st in top of 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, before doing to the following in st *(1 sc, ch 4, make sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 2 ch), sl st in next st,* in next st repeat *process until you have 5 stars points and are back at the beginning. Sl st in top of 1st st in round.
Make sure you leave an tail long enough to secure the star in place on the logo circle during assembly before you cut yarn and pull through.  I stitched mine around the perimeter of the star and around the main circle in Round 1 so it wouldn’t bubble up in the middle.

*This size logo will fit on toddler through adult sized hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and s st in top of 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 1, before doing to the following in st *(1 sc, ch 4, make sc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next  ch), sl st in next st,* in next st repeat *process until you have 5 stars points and are back at the beginning. Sl st in top of 1st st in round.

Finishing off:
Using the yarn tail left on the logo star from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece in a centered location on the front of the logo circle.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the back of your logo circle before fastening off.
Using the yarn tail left on the assembled logo from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece in desired location on the front of your beanie hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the inside of your beanie hat before fastening off.
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. Then you are all done.
