Adventure Time’s Finn Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

This character hat is my crochet interpretation of the character Finn from the popular cartoon series Adventure Time.  I see him everywhere I turn and since my nephew is a giant fan as well as myself, I decided to make Finn plus a Jake hat for him to wear.  I posted it on my personal Facebook account when I finished it a few days ago and you would be surprised by how many adults said they wanted one.  See? Cartoons are not just for kids. Even big kids like myself can enjoy them. 😀

This is actually a lot easier than it may look. If you can work in the round and are an experienced beginner or up, give Finn a try.  It makes a great and fast hat project to gift for a fan or pop on yourself for some fun.  I love wearing my silly hats out in public.  If you have any questions, please let me know.

Have you not heard of Finn or Adventure Time yet?  I guess that’s possible. 😉  If you haven’t and want to learn more, please check out information here.

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe
The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color white yarn  Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start building your Adventure Time Finn character hat. Starting off we are going to add a contrast trim to the bottom of the beanie. This is done in a bright blue to mimic the colors in Finn’s outfit.  No matter what size easy peasy beanie you choose, the instructions are the same.
Taking your bright blue yarn, sl st to attach yarn to last st worked on beanie hat.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each st around until you have reached back to beginning of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.  Fasten off.

Hat ears (Make 2): using white yarn
Note: I tend to make my st tight when working pieces that will be stuffed so if you tend to make looser sts with wider gaps, try switching your hook out for a size or two smaller to help keep the st gaps smaller.
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 hdc in 1st st and each of the following 5 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (12 hdc)
Round 3-5: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and each of the following 11 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (12 hdc)
Round 6: Ch 1 , make 1 hdc in 1st 6 st, 1 sc in next 2 st, sl st in last 4 st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc, 2 sc) This will give you the slanted edge to attach to your rounded beanie so they are pointing up and more upright :)
Leave an extra long tail to attach to hat, cut yarn, pull through yarn and put to side until needed in assembly. If you choose the next optional step for bottoms for this piece, make sure you leave an extra little bit of length to secure it in place during assembly.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes do all st in sc instead of hdc and skip round 4.

Bottom to hat ear piece (Make 2) *optional*: using white yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (12 hdc) Fasten off and repeat for second piece.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes do all st in sc instead of hdc as step above calls for.

Colored face area: using tan, dark cream or light peach yarn
Round 1: Ch 12.  Place 1 dc in to the  3rd ch from the hook, make 1 dc  in next  8 ch and 2 dc in last ch. Rotate your piece so you are now working back of foundation chain.  Place 1 dc in 1st ch on this side (same as last used in previous side), 1 dc in next 8 ch and 2 dc in last st (same as 1st worked in round).  Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.  You will now have your foundation round for your oval worked in the round.  (22 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 1 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of the following 8 st, 2 dc in following 3 st, 1 dc in next 8 st, 2 dc in next 2 st, 1 dc in same st as 1st dc in round worked. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round.  (28 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 1 dc in 1st, 1 dc in each of the following 8 st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in following 9 st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st , 2 dc in next st and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (34 dc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of the following 8 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in following 10 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 2 st,  2 sc in following st and 1 sc in remaining st.  Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (40 sc)
Leave an extra long yarn tail that is long enough to secure the face area directly on to the beanie hat once assembled during finishing off steps, cut yarn and pull through. Place to side until needed in finishing off stage.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes:
For toddlers you may want to switch to hdc instead of dc throughout this feature if you want to scale it down some.
For 6 months to 12 months sized hats, switch to hdc instead of dc for rounds 1 and 2.  For round 3, make it in sc instead of dc pattern calls for and leave off round 4.
For newborn to 6 months sized hats, make round 1 in hdc, round 2 and 3 in sc.  Leave off round 4.

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 sc in circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (6 sc)
Leave tail long enough to secure on to the face area during assembly, cut yarn and pull through. Place to side until needed in finishing off stage. Repeat for second eye.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes that toddler, newborn to 12 months, make 3 sc in circle instead.

Smile: using black yarn
Make a chain of  8. Leave tail long enough to secure on to the face area during assembly, cut yarn and pull through. Place to side until needed in finishing off stage.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes, newborn to 12 month sizes, make a ch of 5 instead of ch of 8 as step above calls for.

Finishing off:
Starting with your colored face area assembly, use the tail left on your smile ch and your yarn needle to sew your smile in desired location on the face area.  You can reference the clipart for Finn above or my pictures to see how I placed my own for this feature.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to back side of face area and fasten off.
Next take the yarn tail left on one of your crocheted eyes using your yarn needle to sew it in place.  Once done, pull yarn to back side of face area before fastening off.  Repeat this process for the second eye.
You now should have one colored face area completely assembled with one extra long yarn tail for attaching this to the front of your beanie. If you see any others on the face area you may have missed during assembly, fasten them off now.   Taking the yarn tail left on  your face area, use your yarn needle to securely fasten it in desired location on front of your beanie hat.  I placed my own just above the last round of dc worked in my own beanie hat but feel free to play around with the placement before attaching your own.   Once you have is secured, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.
Next up is our hat ear assembly.  If you chose to skip the optional step of hat ear base, skip to next paragraph instead.   Taking the white yarn tail left on one hat ear sew around the opening and through lined up ear hat base so that it will cover up your opening with the yarn needle you are using.  Make sure you stop between 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to stuff small amount of fiberfill stuffing in to the hat ear piece before closing up all the way.  Once closed up, use the remaining yarn tail with your yarn needle to attach the assembled hat ear on top of your beanie hat on one top side.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.  I like to reinforce large features with a few extra stitches or knots on the inside before fastening off but this isn’t necessary.  Now repeat the process above for the second hat ear.
If you chose to skip the hat ear base, these are your instructions for ear assembly. Take the white yarn tail left on one hat ear and use your yarn needle to sew it securely in desired location on your beanie hat. You want to make sure that you stop between 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to stuff small amount of fiberfill stuffing in to the hat ear piece before sewing it completely closed flush on the hat.
Tip:  When stuffing the hat ear pieces, just stuff enough to maintain the desired shape of your hat ears so they will stay upright. If you over stuff them it will bubble the bottom and scrunch up surrounding area while wearing it.  It can also cause drooping due to weight.
Now take a few moments to double check over your work for any loose ends or tails you may not of fastened off during assembly of your Finn hat.  If you find any, go ahead and fasten off. All done! One super duper cool Adventure Time Finn character hat. :)
I just know my nephew is going to go crazy over his when I give it to him. I sent a picture to my brother and he said he might steal it to “rock it”. hehe

This character hat is my crochet interpretation of the character Jake the orange dog from the popular cartoon series Adventure Time. My nephew is a really big fan so I decided to make a crocheted Jake character hat for him.  I have to admit I had never crocheted a curved tube before and it almost drove me nuts before I figured it out but once I did it was pretty smooth sailing.  My only annoyance was that and then trying to sew the snout wrinkle tube on to the hat. I may have overstuffed it just a wee bit.  The is definitely advanced beginner and up.  If you make Amigurumi stuffed animals you will probably find it a lot easier than I did.

Have you not heard of Jake or Adventure Time yet?  I guess that’s possible. 😉  If you haven’t and want to learn more, please check out information here.

Leave an extra long tail to attach to hat, cut yarn, pull through yarn and put to side until needed in assembly. Repeat for second ear.

Row 1: Ch 5. Make 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in following ch and 2 dc in remaining ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 2:  Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following 4 st across. Ch 2 and turn.  (6 dc)
Row 3-4: Make 1 dc in each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)

Continue to work 1 sc down the perimeter from your worked row so far counter clockwise, placing 1 sc in each st but 2 sc in bottom most 3 st of curve to give more rounded appearance. Continue around until you have reach back at beginning of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in row.
Leave an extra long tail to attach to hat, cut yarn, pull through yarn and put to side until needed in assembly. You will be using this tail to attach your nose back piece on to the top snout wrinkle piece and then secure your assembled snout on to your beanie hat so make sure you have plenty of length to do so.

You should still have extra long golden yellow tail, do not fasten this off as you will need it during assembly.

Leave a yarn tail to attach to hat before cutting yarn and pulling yarn through. Put to side until needed.
Repeat for second eye.

This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For smaller sizes make do following steps instead of above:
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)

Round 1: Ch 1 before placing following in circle: 1 sc, 3 hdc, 2 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc. Pull your ovalish circle closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (10 st total)
Leave a long enough of a yarn tail to attach to hat before cutting yarn and pulling yarn through. Put to side until needed.

Finishing off:
Starting with your snout / mouth pieces, take the tail left on Jake’s black nose and use your yarn needle to sew it in desired place on front of the assembled snout wrinkle curved tube.  I made mine so the bottom was hanging a little bit off the tube to look more like the character but feel free to secure the whole thing if you desire.  Once secured in place, pull yarn to back of snout wrinkle piece and fasten off.
Now taking the main color golden yellow yarn tail left on your nose base, stitch it in place on to the back of your nose wrinkle piece.  This will support your nose tube, give you an anchor to attach it to hat in next step and provide the mouth / lip line as seen in pictures.  Once secure do not fasten off.  Keep remaining tail and yarn needle to move on to next step.
Taking the remaining tail from above step and needle, sew your assembled nose/snout/mouth area for Jake on to the beanie hat.  I put mine near the bottom lining up the tube to just above the last round on hat but you can move it up higher or even lower to have hanging piece in front.  It’s your call.  Once it is sewn completely in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Next take the tail from one eye white and your yarn needle to sew it on top of one eye color back (black).  I did mine slightly down and to the inside instead of centering it on the black piece so it looked more like the character in images. You can see image near top of blog or reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.  Once secure, pull yarn to back of the eye color back before fastening off. Repeat process for second eye white.
Now taking the black yarn tail left on one assembled eye, use your yarn needle to sew it in place directly on to your Jake beanie hat. I placed mine on each side near the top of the snout piece but you can play around with it and your spacing on your hat. Check out my pictures to see where I placed mine.   Once his eye is attached, pull yarn to inside of beanie and fasten off. Repeat process for second assembled eye.
Next take the tail from one assembled ear and your needle to attach the ear on side of beanie hat.  To be more like the illustrations of Jake the dog, I placed mine just above half way down my hat.  You can see my placement in pictures but feel free to play around with your placement.  I often use safety pins to see how it will look before I attach them.  Once you have stitched on the ear, pull yarn to inside and fasten off. Repeat process for the second ear.
Now just double check your work for any loose ends or extra yarn tails you may have missed during hat assembly. If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off now.
All done. :)  Your Adventure Time Jake the dog character hat is ready to wear or give to a fellow fan. <3  As always if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Happy crafting!

Hello Kitty is just so darn cute and hard to resist.  I can’t help but be drawn to anything and everything HK.  I designed this pattern originally for a gift and at a request for an easy pattern for a beginner to be able to make her beloved Hello Kitty in to a character hat.  I loved it so much I made up my own to wear. :)

You will be surprised at how easy this actually is to make.  If you know how to work in the round, you can make us this beanie hat of Hello Kitty in a short amount of time.  It makes a fun hat to wear or a perfect gift for the Hello Kitty fan in your life.  I have a feeling this is going to be a highly requested gift for the holidays this year from my own family.

Ear Backs plus Ear Assembly (Make 2): using white yarn
Repeat Rows 1 -4 of Ear Fronts but do not fasten off at end of Row 4.  Unlike the Ear Fronts, you want to leave a nice long yarn tail at the beginning of your piece. You will use this to attach your ear to your Hello Kitty hat once assembled.
Ch 1 and turn.
Taking one finished ear front, place it in front of the ear back you are working up, lining up sts on both.
Row 5: Working through both pieces at once, 1 sc in each st down to bottom corner, place (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in corner, work 1 sc in each st across bottom of ear. repeat * from previous corner before proceeding back up last side of your triangular shaped ears until you reach back to where you started. Sl st in to the first st and fasten off. Remember to leave starting tail for piece attached so you can sew this on during assembly.

Row 1: Ch 8.  Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 5 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)

*This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well. For newborn to 12 month sized hats, start with 5 hdc in 1st row and make all dc in pattern steps for this feature in hdc instead of above.

Bow Center Circle: using red yarn
Round 1:  In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle.  Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and in each of the following 9 st around.  Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 sc)
Leave a long enough tail to sew the bow center on to your bow base securely before attaching it directly on to your Hello Kitty hat during assembly before cutting your yarn, pulling through last stitch and placing to side until finishing off steps call for it to be used.

*This feature will work on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sized hats very well.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make Round 1 in hdc instead of dc as above steps call for in pattern.  The bow is supposed to be big so don’t worry about it being too large. :)

Hello Kitty Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern (2)

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your nose and yarn needle to sew your nose in desired place long lengthwise, with each hdc and dc end of oval facing left /right.  Once secured, pull yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Next you want to use the tail from one eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them.  You want these to have the long side facing up/down on your oval shaped eyes.  Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Repeat this process for second eye.
Now using the tail left behind on one of Hello Kitty’s ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.  Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Next take the tail left on your bow center and use your yarn needle to secure it in place on top of your bow main piece. Once firmly attached, use remaining tail and needle to sew your assembled bow directly on to your beanie hat in desired place. Normally you find it placed with the hat facing you in the top right just in front of ear in Hello Kitty images. Once you have secured your bow in place, pull yarn to inside and fasten off.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.
All done! One Hello Kitty character hat crocheted and ready to wear! :)
This was a fun and quick hat project that I can’t wait to wear myself. It will make a great gift for Hello Kitty fans or for sweet crocheted baby hats. Happy crafting!

Pompompurin, who is called Purin for short, is a golden retriever dog character first introduced by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty, in 1996 . He is mostly depicted wearing his chocolate brown beret and with a curling smile on his face but you can find tons of images with him having different expressions if you want to change it up for your own beanie. He is also often found with the adorable Muffin (a little hamster friend), Scone ( a little mouse friend) and even a little bird friend.

You can learn more about Purin and his friends here.

Hat Base: in main color dark cream or light yellow yarn and contrast medium to dark brown colored yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

We will start with the contrast medium to dark brown yarn for beginning of hat to create Purin’s beret look:
Beret – make first 4 rounds (first 3 rounds from pattern for newborn to 12 month sizes) in dark brown yarn from Easy Peasy pattern of your desired size as pattern calls for.
Insert Row 1: Insert in to easy peasy pattern 1 round of sc done in stitch pattern that easy peasy pattern calls for following row in front loops only. Fasten off  brown yarn.
Insert Row 2: Now sl st with dark cream or light yellow yarn on unworked back loop from previous row. Work one round of 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of 1st st in round.
Now resume pattern as how row 5 (row 4 for infant sizes) calls for from pattern not counting your insert rounds in your round total. Go ahead and work rest of hat as easy peasy pattern calls for in instructions.
Fasten off.
*Note: My beret insert Row 1 gave a flippy look when finished with the lip of the beret sticking out a bit. If you don’t like this look you can make Row 1 just another round of 1 sc each around in front loops only so it will lay more flat. Another option is to just create the beret as a separate piece as above instructions call for and just do one insert row of 1 sc around instead of above before sewing your beret on top of completed beanie.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to move on to creating the rest of your Purin hat.

Ear Front: using dark cream or light yellow yarn

Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
Ch 9. Make a sl st in 2nd ch from and next ch. Ch 6.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through.

Finishing off:
Starting with the nose, take the yarn tail from your nose and your yarn needle to sew Purin’s nose in desired location on hat. I made my own just a little under halfway mark of rounds down in cream color, not counting the beret rounds in number but feel free to play around with your own but make sure you will have enough room to add your mouth lines. Once you have secured the nose fully in place, pull yarn to the inside of the beret and fastening off.
Now taking tail left at end of the mouth lines, use your yarn needle to sew the mouth lines in shape of your preference I did the curly “W” shape I found in many of Purin’s pictures (You can see this in my pictures and Purin image near top of pattern for reference). Once you have his mouth secured in place, pull yarn to inside of the beanie and fasten off.
Next up take the tail from one of his eyes and using your yarn needle sew the eye to one side of the face area of your beanie. Again once secure, pull yarn to inside of beret before fastening off yarn. Repeat for second eye.
All that is left now is attaching Purin’s assembled ears from pattern instructions above. Using your yarn needle and the tail left on one ear, sew it in desired place on side of beanie a little under the beret. You want to attach it by the / side of the top of the ear created by the st decrease of last few rows attaching it in a vertical manner. This is help your ears keep front facing ear appearance instead of hanging or floppy ears. Once you have the ears sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of hat. I like to reinforce the joining of large features, like ears, with a few more stitches on inside but it’s not necessary. Once done, fasten off. Repeat for the second ear.
Now just take the time to check over your work to see if there are any yarn tails or loose ends you may have missed before.  If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off now.
All done :) One super chibi cute golden retriever puppy named Purin hat ready to wear.

Here are some pictures to show how this Purin character hat looks like when worn from different angles once completed:

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Clifford the Red dog is one of my favorite book characters from my young childhood.  When I started thinking up book characters to turn into character hats for my mother to wear in her class during reading time, he was on top of my list.  I have been having so much fun making hats and items for her classroom. They have been a big hit with both the children and the teachers.  I had to take a break to work on some special projects and the kids all started asking if I was okay because they were missing out on new hats. 😉

This is an advanced beginner friendly pattern.  If you can crochet in the round you will find this easier than you think.  I hope you enjoy bringing your Clifford hat together like I have.  I tend to fall in love with all of my hats during the creation process. Happy crafting!

Hat Base: in main color yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Clifford the Red Dog children’s book character hat! :)

*Snout / Nose Back*: using red yarn – optional
This step is an optional step in creating this character hat but one I highly recommend.  When you wear crochet hats, the stitches spread open to accommodate heads. This is how they stay on.  So when you have large stuffed features, it helps to have a backing to that area to prevent stuffing from escaping on to the wearer’s head, which can be rather itchy. 😉 It also helps keep the life of the hat longer.
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle.  Pull circle closed and sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in following st*  repeating * pattern around through round. Sl st to top of 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Fasten off.

*The feature above works well on toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For 6 to 12 month sizes, do the above in hdc stitches instead of dc to scale down the features to a more appropriate size.  For newborn to 6 month sizes, do the above in hdc and eliminate round 3 increase for this feature.

Snout / Nose: using red yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle.  Pull circle closed and sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)

Round 4-6:  Ch 1 before placing 1 dc in 1st st and each of the following 29 st around. Sl st in top of 1st round. (30 dc)
Leave a long enough of a yarn tail to be able to sew your snout/nose to the snout/nose back *optional* and on to your beanie hat during assembly before cutting they yarn.  Pull yarn through last stitch and place to side until needed in finishing steps.

*The feature above works well on toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For 6 to 12 month sizes, do the above in hdc stitches instead of dc to scale down the features to a more appropriate size and do not do round 6.  For newborn to 6 month sizes, do the above in hdc and eliminate round 3 increase plus round 6 for this feature.

Black Nose: using black yarn

Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 3 dc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (3 dc)
Row 2:   In 1st st place 2 dc, 1 dc in next st and 2 dc in last st.  Ch 1 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 3:  Place 1 st in each st around perimeter of nose, placing 2 sc in each of the three corners of the triangular shaped nose to give it a more round appearance until you make it back to 1st st in row.  Sl st in top of the 1st st.
Make sure you leave a long enough tail before cutting yarn so that you can use it to sew your black nose on to the front of the nose/snout during assembly plus freehand stitch on Clifford’s smile.

*The feature above works well on toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (2 hdc)
Row 2:   In both st place 2 hdc. Ch 1 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 3:  Place 1 st in each st around perimeter of nose, placing 2 sc in each of the three corners of the triangular shaped nose to give it a more round appearance until you make it back to 1st st in row.  Sl st in top of the 1st st.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following stitches in this order:  3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 4 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.  Pull ovalish circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (14 st total)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye pupil in place on eye white during finishing steps before cutting yarn. Sit to side until needed.
Repeat process for second eye pupil.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will work the st in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc. Sl st closed. (9 st total)

Eye Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following stitches in this order:  3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 4 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc.  Pull ovalish circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (14 st total)
Round 2:  Ch 1 before making 1 sc in 1st 3 st, 2 dc in next 3 st, 1 sc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next 3 st, 1 sc in last st. Sl s in top of the 1st st in round. (20 st total)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye whites directly on to the beanie during hat assembly.
Repeat process for second eye.

(9 st total)  and for 2nd round switch all dc stitches to hdc.

Ear Front (Make 2): using main color red yarn
Row 1: Ch 9. Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each ofthe following 6 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 2: Make 2 dc in 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the next 5 st and 2 dc in last st. Ch 2 and turn.  (9 dc)
Row 3-6: Place 1 dc in 1st st in row and in each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (9 dc)
Row 7: Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 7 st. Ch 2 and turn. (8 dc)
Row 8: Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 6 st. Ch 2 and turn.(7 dc)
Row 9:  Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn.(6 dc)
Row 10:  Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn.(5  dc)
Row 11-14: Work 1 dc in each st in row across. (5 dc)
Fasten off.
Repeat process for second ear.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes, switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

Ear Back and Assembly (Make 2): using main color red yarn
Repeat instructions for Rows 1-14 of the Ear Fronts but do not fasten off at the end of Row 14.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 10: Place a finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on, lining up the st.  ( I like to use safety pins to mark the ends of mine so I don’t have to stop and keep checking to see if they line up as I can be a bit OCD about that kind of thing. 😉 but it is not a necessary step.)  Now work a round of 1 sc in each st around perimeter of Clifford’s ear. When you reach the bottom of ear you can make 2 sc in each of the 5 center bottom st to give it a nice rounded appearance like I have in my picture.
Make sure you leave a tail that is long enough to secure the ear in place on the beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through last stitch and placing to side.
Repeat process for second ear.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes,  switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

Hair on top of head: using black yarn
(first hair) Ch 10.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the next 6 sc. Sl st in next ch from hook.
(second hair) Leaving last ch unworked for now, ch 7. Make 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and following 5 ch. Sl st in last ch from hook previously unworked.
(third hair) Ch 6.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 4 ch. Sl st back in to the starting st for this hair.
Make sure you leave a long enough yarn tail on your hair piece to attach to the top of Clifford’s head during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through last stitch and putting to side until needed.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes. For newborn to 12 month sizes,  switch to following instructions instead of above:
(first hair) Ch 8.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc. Sl st in next ch from hook.
(second hair) Leaving last ch unworked for now, ch 5. Make 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and following 3 ch. Sl st in last ch from hook previously unworked.
(third hair) Ch 4.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 2 ch. Sl st back in to the starting st for this hair.

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Crochet Pattern (19)

Finishing off:
Starting off we will be assembling the nose/ snout part of Clifford.  Take the tail left on the black nose for him and your yarn needle to sew it in desired location near the top of the front of the nose/snout piece.  Don’t make it too high or it won’t show when wearing it from the front and too low you won’t be able to stitch the mouth on.  You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine.  Once you have it secured in place, use the leftover yarn tail to freehand stitch on his mouth lines.  Once completed, pull your yarn to inside of nose/snout and fasten off.
Now take the red yarn tail from your nose/snout piece and use the yarn needle to attach it to the nose/snout back piece (if you did this step) or on to the beanie hat if skipped nose/snout backing.  Stop about 3/4 of the way around to lightly stuff the nose/snout piece with the fiberfill stuffing. You just want to do enough so that you get the full rounded appearance you desire but don’t over stuff it.  If you overfill this feature it will bubble up in the back making the area around the hat where it is attached bunch up or sag when wearing it.   Once you have completely assembled the snout and attached it to the beanie, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.
Taking the tail from one eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it on place on top of your eye white. I placed mine near the bottom of the eye to be more like the illustrations I found of Clifford. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine but feel free to play around with your placement as you desire.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to the back of the eye white before fastening off. Repeat for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my Clifford hat.   Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next using the tail left behind on one of the Clifford’s assembled ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. (You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.)  If you want longer hanging ears place lower on side of beanie. For shorter ones, place higher up on beanie hat.  Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off any extra length.  Repeat this process for the second ear.
All that is left now is his three little hairs piece on top of his head.  Taking the black yarn tail from his hairs and your yarn needle, sew them in place on top of the beanie hat.  For my character hat I placed it in the center of beginning circle of round 1 for the beanie base but feel free to move it around to see where you like it best before attaching it.  Once fully attached, pull yarn to inside of beanie and fasten off.
Now take the time to check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so now if you find any.

Here are some pictures to show how the completed Clifford the Red Dog book character hat looks like worn from different angles once you are all done:

Happy Chocolate Chip Cookie Applique Free Crochet Pattern

During a day of boredom and not wanting to do any big projects I decided to try making a few chibi looking fun sweets to use as appliques for plain beanies etc.  So my little happy cookie friend was born.  I ended up making a cute icecream cone and cupcake to go along with him as well. :)

This was an easy and short project that even beginners can make up in one sitting.  If you know how to work in the round, you will be able to make this cute little guy.  Here is a picture below of the little set all together plus a silly monkey one I made up at the same time.

Happy Cupcake Applique Free Crochet Pattern

Even though I don’t eat sugar for health reasons, I can’t resist the cuteness of cupcakes. I’ve been making a lot of cupcake themed projects as of late so I had to make a fun little applique to use on some of my projects.  That is how the happy cupcake came to be.  I may have made a few squee noises over it when I was finishing it up. I already have plans for this one to go on my Kindle case I recently crocheted. :)

I did make a cute little set on the same day of this cupcake, a happy chocolate chip cookie, a happy icecream cone and a cute but silly monkey face.  Here is a picture below of the little set all together.

Row 5: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 sc in each of the following 2 st, and sctog last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1 but do not turn like previous rounds. Work 1 sc in each st down side of cupcake frosting. Place 3 sc in bottom corner *ch 2, sc in next st* repeating across to other bottom corner of frosting placing 3 sc in corner. Work 1 sc in each st up last side of frosting until you reach 1st st in round.  Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round.
Leave a tail long enough to attach to be able to sew on the frosting part of your cupcake applique on to cake bottom of your cupcake and then on to your project. Leaving tail, cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until finishing steps.

Cherry on top: using red yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 10 sc in to the circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.
Leave a tail long enough to attach to frosting top with a few stitches and be able to sew on the cherry part of your applique on to your project before cutting yarn. Pull through yarn and place to side until needed in assembly.

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Make a ch of 4. Sl st in to the last ch from hook.  Leave a tail long enough to sew on to your cupcake before cutting and pulling through yarn.  Put to side until needed in assembly.  Repeat for second eye.

Mouth: using black yarn
Leave out a small amount of black yarn to freehand stitch on smile during finishing steps.

Finishing off:
Using the tail from one of your cupcake’s eyes and your yarn needle, sew your eye in to desired place. You can reference my pictures on where I placed mine on my cupcake.  Once secure in place, pull yarn to back of applique before fastening off.  Repeat for second eye.
Using the small amount of black yarn you set aside for the freehand smile, use your needle to freehand stitch on your smile where you want it.  I just did a simple smile but feel free to play around with what you like best.  Once done, pull yarn to back and fasten off.
Taking the tail from your cherry and yarn needle, attach your cherry to top of your frosting top with a few stitches. I just use a simple back and forth. Do not cut remaining tail.
You should have three tails left:
1. Red yarn tail for cherry
2. Brown or tan yarn tail for cake base
3. Pink or desired frosting color yarn tail for frosting top.
Why three tails?  You will be using each one to attach that color of the applique on to your project.  Otherwise you will have contrasting colored stitches.
Now all you have left to do is figure out what project you want to attach your happy cupcake applique too!  The sky is the limit.  When you know where you are going to put it, just simply use the tail from the part of the cupcake that matches to secure it to project, pull yarn to back and fasten off. Repeat with other two tails.
All done. :)

When I saw Rilakkuma (Relax Bear) and Korilakkuma (Little Bear) I just knew I had to make them into some crochet character hats.  They are too sweet not to make.  I originally planned on making one Korilakkuma hat in toddler size for one of my nieces to wear but ended up making a Rilakkuma for her mother to wear as well.  I’m kind of jealous of the hats. I may have to take some time soon and make myself one to keep. :)

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice For the bottom contrast trim, using your contrast color yarn (Golden yellow for Rilakkuma and pink for Korilakkuma), attach to st where you left off from in last round of beanie hat with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and in each st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your cute Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma character hats.

The following instructions work for both hats, just pay attention to colors specified for each hat:

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 8 hdc in to circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (8 hdc)
Leave a tail long enough to sew eye in place during assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through. Put to side until needed during finishing off steps. Repeat instructions for second eye.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 6 hdc instead.

Leave a tail long enough to sew nose and mouth lines in place on the colored face area during assembly before cutting yarn then pulling through. Put to side until needed during finishing off steps.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 4 sc instead of 6 sc in Round 1 and in Round 2 make two ch 3 tails but do not work sc in to them. Just fasten off yarn at end of first mouth line tail. Repeat Rounds 1 – 2 of the Ear Front done in previous step but do not fasten off at end of Round 2.
Round 3: Place one completed Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working up, lining up the stitches. Now Ch 1 and turn. Working through both pieces make 1 sc through first st on both, then work *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in following st * around until you reach the first st from Round 2, which is right before your flat ear, place your sc in this st before making a sl st back in to the same st, sc in to side of st and in each of the 3 unworked st from previous round, 1 sc in to side of 1st st from round and finish off with sl st in to the top of the 1st st in this round.
Leave a long enough tail to ensure you can completely secure your ear on to the top side of beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and putting to side until called for in finishing off assembly. Repeat for second ear.

Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma Character Beanie Hats Crochet Pattern (29)

Finishing off:
Starting with the face area, take the yarn tail left on the black nose / mouth lines piece and your yarn needle to sew your nose / mouth lines on place on to the colored face area. See my picture above to see how I placed my own.  Once you have it secured in place, pull the yarn through to the back of the face area and fasten off.
Now taking the tail left on your assembled face area and your yarn needle, sew it in place directly on to your beanie hat.  You can play around to see how you like it placed. I personally normally but the bottom of my face area right above the last round of dc st in my beanie hats so you still get the color above the trim but it isn’t too high on face.   Once you have it nice and secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie before fastening off. For eyes, take tail of one eye and use your yarn needle to sew it in desired place on either side of the colored face area.  You can see my pictures to see how I placed them on my completed hats in this set.  Once you have the eye in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.  Repeat process for second eye.
Now we are going to place the ears in place on the hat.  You can move them around to see how you like them on your hat before attaching.  It drives me a bit nutty if mine aren’t exactly symmetrical in position so I use a couple safety pins to attach them before I start sewing with the tail and yarn needle in to place.  As before, once you have it securely in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off. Repeat for second ear.
Now you just need to take a few moments to look over your assembled hat to check for any tails or loose ends you might of missed out on during assembly process. If you find any, fasten them off now.
That’s it. All done!  One chibi Rilakkuma and/ or Korilakkuma character hat ready to wear. :)

This set of crochet character hats were inspired by the adorable Ilo and Milo from ilomilo video game.  I couldn’t resist making them in to these hats for my nephews to wear.  I can’t wait to see them wear them. :)

If you or someone you know is a gaming geek or just a fan of ilomilo, this is a fun but quick project you can make up.  The antennae are super easy as they are just a few rows of sc sewn shut around a pipe cleaner so the pipe cleaner does all the shaping work.

I would love to see your versions if you decide to make them so please send them my way or add it to the Ravelry project page. Happy crafting!

Leave an extra long tail to secure the face area on to the beanie hat after face area is ready to attach during finishing off steps before you cut the yarn, pull it through and set to side until needed.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 14. Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 11 ch across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2-3: Place 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following 11 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)

Eyes (Make 2 per hat): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to secure on to face area during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until steps require it later.
Repeat process for second eye.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1  before placing 5 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (5 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 3 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (3 sc)

Curled Antennae for top of head: using black yarn and pipe cleaners (optional)
Row 1: Ch 21. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 19 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)

Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long tail. You are going to use this tail to stitch the antenna into a circular tube which will just be wide enough for a pipe cleaner or two to slip inside to help you hold your form.
You may choose to not use a pipe cleaner and add a little coated wire or stuffing. One way to get the curve of the antenna without using pipe cleaner or wire is to skip a st inbetween sewing together the area you want to curve and pull yarn tight before going to next one. :)

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 17. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 15 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. (16 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:

Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. (12 sc)

ilomilo's Ilo and Milo Character Hats Crochet Pattern (25)

Finishing off:
Taking the tail on one eye and your yarn needle sew the first eye to bottom right of face area. You can see my pictures on where I placed them on my hats.  Once attached, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Taking the tail on the second eye and your yarn needle attach it to the bottom left of face area. Again once attached in place, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Now using the leftover yarn tail on the face area and yarn needle secure the face area directly on to the front of the beanie hat in desired location.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat before fastening off.
Using tail on your antenna and your needle, stitch your antennae closed at end you are starting with that has tail at before stitching down your piece forming it in a circular tube around the pipe cleaner (again this is optional but I do recommend it as it helps keep it in an upright curved position). I just did a simple back and forth stitch as my sewing skills are less than stellar. Once you have the tube closed and reached the bottom end, move on to next step.
Using tail left on your antenna from previous step and needle, secure it in place on the top of your beanie hat. Once you have it sewn in your desired place, I centered mine on the first round on hat base, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now just check for any loose ends or tails you may have missed during assembly and if you find any, do so now.
All done!

Cookie Monster will always remain one of my favorite Sesame Street characters of all time. I never could get enough of him and Elmo.. oh and then Count.  When I found out that one of my little heroes with Juvenile Arthritis was a big fan of Cookie Monster I just had to try to make him up into a hat.  I love his googly crazy eyes. :)

This is actually a pretty good hat project for beginners and advanced beginners to crochet up.  It was definitely a fun project and I plan on make more of the Sesame Street characters in the near future to make up a set of patterns, for free of course.

Eye backs (*optional step – Make 2): using white yarn
Note: This step is optional but I highly recommend it to prevent stuffing in eyeballs to seep out of hat when worn and itch foreheads. It helps keep the stuffing where you want when stitches are spread when worn.

Round 2: Ch 2 before making 2 hdc in 1st st and each of the following 9 st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (20 hdc)

Repeat process for second eye.

Mouth: using black yarn
Row 1: Ch 12. Place 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the following 8 ch, and 2 dc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)

Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long enough tail to be able to sew your Cookie Monster’s mouth on securely, before pulling yarn through and moving on to assembly.

*This feature works well on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sizes of beanies.  For newborns to 12 month sizes, do the following instructions instead of those above:
Row 1: Ch 6. Place 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of the following 8 ch, and 2 hdc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)

Row 3: Place 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the following 12 ch, and 2 hdc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn.. (12 hdc)
Row 4: Skipping 1st st, place 1 sc in second st, make 1 sc in the next 3 st, sctog next 2 st, now continue working around perimeter of mouth placing 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each of the mouth’s upper corners until you reach back to start of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.

Finishing off:
I like to start working from the bottom up on my hats so I don’t mismanage my space and end up with features all scrunched together. This way if you misjudge your space you can always move the next feature up the hat a little further than you planned. :) I often will use a wig model Styrofoam head and straight pins to place my features before I sew them to get a feel for how they will turn out. I know I’m a little OCD about my crochet. Too bad I’m not about my house being organized…
Taking your yarn tail from your mouth you completed in last steps and your yarn needle, sew his open mouth in desired location on the hat. I normally start features just above the last round of dc on my hat bases but feel free to play around and find what you like the best. I find that if I stitch around the perimeter and then place a few stitched into the middle of the smile it will keep it from bubbling up in the center.  Once you have sewn Cookie Monster’s mouth in to place, pull your leftover yarn tail to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Next we will assemble the eyes prior to attaching them to the beanie hat. Taking the tail from one black eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it in desired location on one eye white front. I placed mine in oddball positions like in picture of Cookie Monster near top of blog so he would look more silly. You can reference my pictures as well to get an idea of how it looks. Once secure, pull your yarn to the inside of the eye white front before fastening off. Repeat this process for second eye pupil.

*Attaching the eye back. This is an optional step for those that opted to make the eye backs to keep the stuffing from falling out. Again I highly recommend this step and it really doesn’t take much more time. It’s appreciated in the long run. Taking the tail from one eye front, line up an eye back with back side facing in and use your yarn needle to sew the two pieces together so that the eye back will close the bottom up of the eye front. You want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to add your fiberfill stuffing (or desired stuffing) to the eyes before you close them up. You want to add enough stuffing that the eyes keep an nice rounded appearance for the 3D eyes but not so much that your eye back bulges out. This over stuffing will make make your area around the eye when attached bunch up and sometimes the eyes sag. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Do not fasten off the remainder tail as this will be used next. Now you will use your assembled eye and tail with your yarn needle to sew the assembled eye directly on to your beanie hat. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed the eyes on my Cookie Monster character hat but again, feel free to play around to find what you like the best. Once secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.

If you skipped the optional eye back steps, now you will take your yarn needle and the tail left on one eye front to sew it into place directly on to your beanie hat in desired place. You will want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 around to stuff it until you reach the rounded appearance of the eye you are looking for. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.
Now take a minute to double check your Cookie Monster beanie hat to check for any tails or yarns ends you might of missed during assembly. If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! One super easy and cute Cookie Monster crocheted character hat sure to pass along a few smiles. I hope you like my hat. I’m working on making each of the Sesame Street characters come alive in crochet hats. I can’t just make one right? 😉
