Cookie Monster Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Cookie Monster will always remain one of my favorite Sesame Street characters of all time. I never could get enough of him and Elmo.. oh and then Count.  When I found out that one of my little heroes with Juvenile Arthritis was a big fan of Cookie Monster I just had to try to make him up into a hat.  I love his googly crazy eyes. :)

This is actually a pretty good hat project for beginners and advanced beginners to crochet up.  It was definitely a fun project and I plan on make more of the Sesame Street characters in the near future to make up a set of patterns, for free of course.

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy  Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern which you can find here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Cookie Monster character hat! :)

Eye backs (*optional step – Make 2): using white yarn
Note: This step is optional but I highly recommend it to prevent stuffing in eyeballs to seep out of hat when worn and itch foreheads. It helps keep the stuffing where you want when stitches are spread when worn.
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before making 2 hdc in 1st st and each of the following 9 st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (20 hdc)
Fasten off and put to side until needed during assembly steps.

*This feature works well on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sizes of beanies.  For newborns to 12 month sizes, do the following instructions instead of those above:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before making 2 sc in 1st st and each of the following 7 st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (16 sc)

Eye White Fronts (Make 2): Using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before making 2 hdc in 1st st and each of the following 9 st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (20 hdc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st to the top of 1st st. (20 hdc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in the 1st st and each of the following 9 st around. (20 sc)
Make sure you leave a long enough of a yarn tail to be able to secure your eye back (*optional) to your eye white and then sew your assembled eye on to your beanie hat securely in place before you cut the yarn. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed during assembly steps.
Repeat process for second eye.

(16 sc)
Round 3-4: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 7 st around. Sl st to the top of 1st st. (16 sc)

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (6 sc)
Make sure you leave a long enough of a yarn tail to be able to secure your eye pupil in to desired place on eye whites before you cut the yarn, pull it through and place to side until needed in finishing off steps.
Repeat process for second eye pupil.

*This feature works well on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sizes of beanies.  For newborns to 12 month sizes, do the following instructions instead of those above:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 3 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (3 sc)

Mouth: using black yarn
Row 1: Ch 12. Place 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in each of the following 8 ch, and 2 dc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2: Place 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of the following 10 ch, and 2 dc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (14 dc)
Row 3: Place 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of the following 12 ch, and 2 dc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn.. (16 dc)
Row 4: Skipping 1st st, place 1 sc in second st, make 1 sc in the next 4 st, sctog next 2 st, sctog next 2 st,  now continue working around perimeter of mouth placing 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each of the mouth’s upper corners until you reach back to start of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long enough tail to be able to sew your Cookie Monster’s mouth on securely, before pulling yarn through and moving on to assembly.

*This feature works well on toddler, youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and men sizes of beanies.  For newborns to 12 month sizes, do the following instructions instead of those above:
Row 1: Ch 6. Place 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of the following 8 ch, and 2 hdc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 2: Place 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the following  ch, and 2 hdc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn. (10 hdc)
Row 3: Place 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the following 12 ch, and 2 hdc in final chain. Ch 2 and turn.. (12 hdc)
Row 4: Skipping 1st st, place 1 sc in second st, make 1 sc in the next 3 st, sctog next 2 st, now continue working around perimeter of mouth placing 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each of the mouth’s upper corners until you reach back to start of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.

Finishing off:
I like to start working from the bottom up on my hats so I don’t mismanage my space and end up with features all scrunched together. This way if you misjudge your space you can always move the next feature up the hat a little further than you planned. :) I often will use a wig model Styrofoam head and straight pins to place my features before I sew them to get a feel for how they will turn out. I know I’m a little OCD about my crochet. Too bad I’m not about my house being organized…
Taking your yarn tail from your mouth you completed in last steps and your yarn needle, sew his open mouth in desired location on the hat. I normally start features just above the last round of dc on my hat bases but feel free to play around and find what you like the best. I find that if I stitch around the perimeter and then place a few stitched into the middle of the smile it will keep it from bubbling up in the center.  Once you have sewn Cookie Monster’s mouth in to place, pull your leftover yarn tail to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Next we will assemble the eyes prior to attaching them to the beanie hat. Taking the tail from one black eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it in desired location on one eye white front. I placed mine in oddball positions like in picture of Cookie Monster near top of blog so he would look more silly. You can reference my pictures as well to get an idea of how it looks. Once secure, pull your yarn to the inside of the eye white front before fastening off. Repeat this process for second eye pupil.

*Attaching the eye back. This is an optional step for those that opted to make the eye backs to keep the stuffing from falling out. Again I highly recommend this step and it really doesn’t take much more time. It’s appreciated in the long run. Taking the tail from one eye front, line up an eye back with back side facing in and use your yarn needle to sew the two pieces together so that the eye back will close the bottom up of the eye front. You want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to add your fiberfill stuffing (or desired stuffing) to the eyes before you close them up. You want to add enough stuffing that the eyes keep an nice rounded appearance for the 3D eyes but not so much that your eye back bulges out. This over stuffing will make make your area around the eye when attached bunch up and sometimes the eyes sag. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Do not fasten off the remainder tail as this will be used next. Now you will use your assembled eye and tail with your yarn needle to sew the assembled eye directly on to your beanie hat. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed the eyes on my Cookie Monster character hat but again, feel free to play around to find what you like the best. Once secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.

If you skipped the optional eye back steps, now you will take your yarn needle and the tail left on one eye front to sew it into place directly on to your beanie hat in desired place. You will want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 around to stuff it until you reach the rounded appearance of the eye you are looking for. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.
Now take a minute to double check your Cookie Monster beanie hat to check for any tails or yarns ends you might of missed during assembly. If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! One super easy and cute Cookie Monster crocheted character hat sure to pass along a few smiles. I hope you like my hat. I’m working on making each of the Sesame Street characters come alive in crochet hats. I can’t just make one right? 😉

Here are some of the pictures I took to show how the completed Cookie Monster character hat looks once you finish:

Round 3-5: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (12 sc)

*Monster Horn Bottom (Make 3): using blue yarn (or desired color)*
*This is an optional step but one I highly recommend. Why? It prevents the stuffing from oozing out and itching foreheads when hats are worn as the stitches stretch out.  I like to do this on the back of stuffed features so that doesn’t happen and they keep their desired shape. *
Round 1:  In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in top of 1st st in round. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 2 sc in each st around. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (12 sc )
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st, *make 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in following st *  repeating * until back at start of round. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (18 sc) fasten off.

*This feature will work well on toddler to adult male sized hats as pattern calls for. For newborn to 12 month sized hats, do the following:
Round 1:  You will start with black yarn to make the pupil of the eye. In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in top of 1st st in round. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 2 sc in each st around. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (12 sc ) Fasten off.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use tail left on your monster’s eye and yarn needle to sew it in place securely on beanie hat.  Once secure, pull yarn inside hat before fastening off.
For the lopsided smile, use your tail and yarn needle to sew the smile chain in desired position near the bottom of the beanie hat.  Once you have it in place, pull yarn to inside of your hat and fasten off.
Now that your smile is in place, take the tail from one smile side and use your needle to sew on one side of the smile. Once secure pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.  Repeat for second smile side.
Using the tail left on your white tooth and needle, sew it in desired location on smile you created on previous step.  You can reference the pictures with the pattern to see how I placed my own.  Once in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.
*optional step for those who made horn bottoms in previous steps* Taking the tail left on one horn and and horn bottom, line the stitches up with horn bottom covering opening on horn.  Now stitch through both pieces for each stitch around. You will want to stop about 2/3 of the way to stuff your horn to desired fill.  I have a bad habit of over stuffing my features and it makes them bubble on the bottom so I try to do a little less than what I think looks good to compensate for the curve of the fitted hat when worn.  Once you have stitched all around perimeter, securing the bottom in place, keep the leftover tail to use in following step.  Repeat this process for the other 2 horns for your hat.
Taking the yarn tail left on one of your monster’s horns and your yarn needle, sew the horn securely on place on top of the beanie hat.  I started with the middle one and centered it on top of the hat before placing the other two on each side equal distance apart from middle horn but feel free to play around with it.   Once it is attached, pull your yarn to the inside and fasten off.  Now repeat the process for the other horns.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

This hat was designed for one of amazing Juvenile Arthritis kids mother, Rochelle, who also has Autoimmune Arthritis. When she heard I was making our walk team Chick hats to wear she was a bit bummed as she is a part of her son’s arthritis walk team Parker’s Purple Playas.  So this pretty purple chick designed was created to bring together the RA Chicks chick idea with Parker’s purple. I even topped her off with an arthritis awareness blue bow. Of course you can feel free to switch up the colors to whatever you like but I had to share the instruction for arthritis awareness since I’m a health activist for Autoimmune Arthritis. :)

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peas Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern, which you can find  here as a foundation for the projectWant it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color purple yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your pretty purple chick hat. :)
First we are going to add a simple lighter purple contrast trim to the beanie base. Taking your contrast color yarn, attach with a sl st where you left off at last round of your beanie.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each st around.  Sl st in top of 1st st in round and fasten off.

Feathered Hair on top of hat: using lighter purple yarn
Ch 10, sl st in to last ch from hook. Ch 15, sl st back in to the ch you just worked ch from. Ch 10 and sl st back into starting ch.
Leave a long enough tail to secure your hair feathers on top of the beanie during assembly, before cutting yarn and pulling through. Now place this to the side until finishing steps.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 2 before placing  8 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (8 hdc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye pupil in place on eye white during finishing steps before cutting yarn. Sit to side until needed.
Repeat process for second eye pupil.

*This eye pupil will work well on toddler to adult sized hats. For newborn to 12 month sized hats, your pupil will be as follows instead of Round 1 above:
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 4 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (4 sc)

Eye Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 2 before placing  12 dc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 dc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye whites directly on to the beanie during hat assembly.
Repeat process for second eye.

*This eye white design will work well on toddler to adult sized beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will work 10 hdc instead of 12 dc in to your circle in Round 1.

Beak: using orange yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in top of 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 2nd st, leaving 1st st unworked, place 1 sc in next 3 st, sl st in next st, stopping here and leaving rest of st unworked. (4 sc)
Make sure you leave a yarn tail long enough to be able to sew your beak in place on beanie before cutting yarn, pulling through and putting to side until needed in assembly stage.

*This beak will work on toddler through adult sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, do the following:
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc in circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in top of 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Round 2: Sl st in 2nd st, leaving 1st st unworked, ch 1 place 1 sc in next  st, ch 1 before sl st in next st, stopping here and leaving rest of st unworked.

Bow:  using arthritis awareness blue yarn
Row 1: Ch 14, work 1 dc in the 3rd ch from hook (first 2 ch does not count as st throughout pattern) and place 1 dc in each of the following 11 ch.  Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2: Make 1 dc in 1st st and place 1 dc in each of the following 11 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 3: Make 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following st across. Ch 1 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 4: Work a round of 1 sc in each st, 3 sc in each corner to give a more rounded appearance, completely around the perimeter of your bow piece. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st once you have worked it all the way around.
Make sure you leave a long enough tail to secure your bow in place on the beanie hat during finishing off steps.

*This size bow will work great on toddler through adult sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, do the following:
Row 1: Ch 10, work 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook (first 2 ch does not count as st throughout pattern) and place 1 hdc in each of the following 7 ch.  Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 2: Make 1 hdc in 1st st and place 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 3: Make 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following st across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 hdc)

Row 4: Work a round of 1 sc in each st, 3 sc in each corner to give a more rounded appearance, completely around the perimeter of your bow piece. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st once you have worked it all the way around.

Rochelle's Pretty Purple Chick Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Closeup on feature details

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on the orange beak and your yarn needle to sew your Chick’s beak in place on beanie hat.  You can reference my pictures on how I placed mine. Once your beak is fully secured,  pull your yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Using tail on one black eye pupil and needle, sew it in place securely on top of an eye white.  Once secure, pull yarn to back of eye then fasten off.  Repeat this process for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my hat.  Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next take the tail left on your blue hair bow for Chick hat and your yarn needle to sew in to your desired location on hat. Again you can reference my pictures on where I placed my own.  I like to fold the center of my bows in half and place a few back / forth stitches to help them retain that shape before sewing it on to my location.  I like how the bows look when narrowed in the center but that is totally optional and up to your own preferences.
Using tail left on your feathered “hair” you made earlier, secure it in to place on the top of your chick hat.  I centered mine on the center of the original round on the beanie but feel free to play around with where you want to place yours.  Once you have sewn it in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie and fasten off.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

Here are some pictures to show how the completed Purple Chick hat looks like worn from different angles once you are all done:

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy  Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern which you can find here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Hat Base: using medium to dark pink yarn or desired color for hat base
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice. Once finished put it to the side until you are ready to attach applique.

Heart : Using Red (or other color you want for heart) yarn with “J” crochet hook
The heart I made by this tutorial for Medium sized heart (2 rounds) by HeloiseV Crochet.
(Note: Make sure you leave an extra long tail at the end. This will be used in finishing steps below.)

Angel Wings (Make 2): Using white yarn with “J” crochet hook
Round 1: Chain 9. Sc in second chain from hook and continue making one sc per chain until end.  Ch 2 and turn. (8 sc)
Round 2: For this row, dc once in first two st, hdc in next 3 st, sc in next st and sctog last two st.  Ch 1 and turn. (7 st total).
Round 3: For this row, sc in first two st, hdc in next 3 st, dc in last two st. Ch 3 and turn.  (7 st total)
Round 4: Sl st in first st, *ch 3 then sl st in next st* repeat * until at end of starting corner. Ch 1 and rotate piece so you are working at back end of Round 1.
Round 5: (Note: This is an optional round. I like the more finished look with my wings.) Sc in first sc and each sc across (8 sc). Pull through.

(Tip: Make sure you leave an extra long tail at the end. This will be used in finishing steps below.)

Letter J or whatever letter you choose (in matching main color to beanie base – in my case hot pink)For my “J” I just single crocheted a chain the approximate length I wanted to make the J on the heart. For this one shown in pictures it was a chain of 9.
Then just use your tapestry (large eye yarn) needle to secure it in the finished place on top of the heart. This is an optional step that you can exclude from your project if so desired.

Finishing off:
To attach the wings to the heart, overlap them slightly behind heart before using needle to pull through and make a few stitches with your starting tail. It doesn’t have to be much or long as it is just to keep them about where you want them to attach to hat.

*Tip: If your wings seem to be too tall or fat, pull on outermost corner, diagonally. This will stretch out the wings making them shorter and longer.

Now place your appliques on top of the beanie where you want them to be on the finished project.

*Tip: If you want to, you can use clothing pins or safety pins to hold them in place during your stitching. I tend to pin mine in place with some straight pins on to my Styrofoam model head. I’m a bit of a planner..

Taking your end tail from one wing, work on sewing a simple stitch around the perimeter of the wing through the beanie with your tapestry needle. Pull end through and finish off.

Using tail end from other wing duplicate what is done in first wing but in a mirror image of the location of the first one with tapestry needle. This is where using those pins can come in handy so they don’t move about on you. 😉 Pull end through and finish off.

Taking the last end tail hanging from your applique, for the heart, thread tapestry needle and secure heart in place on to beanie.

Just finish off and cut off extra lengths. You are ready to go!

Give is a try. Happy crafting!

Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

Hat Base:

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to get started on making this a dinoRAWR spiked hat. :)

Hat Contrast Band: using contrast color yarn of your choice
Taking contrast color yarn, attach to bottom of last round of beanie with a sl st. Ch 1 and work 1 sc in to each st around. Sl st to top of first st in round.
Cut yarn and fasten off.

If you like a wider contrast band or want to make the color contrast pop more, try adding an additional row of sc to the bottom. I sometimes do this when I feel a project needs it but it’s not necessary, just my personal preference. :)

Dinosaur Spikes (Make 4):
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before making 8 dc into circle. Sl st to top of first st in round.  (8 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2.  Place 3 dc in first st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 st, 3 dc in next st and 1 dc in last st. Sl st to top of first st in round. (12 dc)
Round 3:  Ch 2. 1 dc in 1st, 3 dc in following st, 1 dc in each of the next 5 st, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of last 4 st.  Sl st to top of first st in round. (16 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3. 1 dc in first 2 st, 1 dc in each of the following 7 st, 3 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of last 5 st.  Sl st to top of first st in round. (20 dc)
Round 5:  Sl st in first two st. Fold your spike in half so that you are now working in a corner. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc through both st lined up in fold and in each to the end. (10 sc)
Make sure you leave a long enough tail to secure your spike to the crocheted hat when finished!
Cut yarn and pull through.  Put to side until finished with all 4 spikes (or desired amount if you want more or less)

Finishing off:
At this point you should have your finished crocheted beanie hat base and your finished dinosaur spikes.  For this hat I arranged them evenly from front forehead to back of head by pinning mine in place first with straight pins to make sure placement was okay.  Yes I have a little bit of OCD with my crocheting.  This is not necessary but it’s a good idea to mark your starting or ending points with pins, stitch markers or even a few short scraps of yarn.
Taking your yarn needle, use tails on spikes to sew them directly on to the beanie hat.  I just did a basic in and out stitch to weave it in securely.  Pull yarn through to inside of hat after spike is attached, perform a double knot (where you pass the yarn through the loop twice before pulling tightly to close). You can do one or two additional knots if you prefer, I often do but it’s because I’m always paranoid of unraveling. I haven’t had that happen since using the double knots though so it will do the job well. :)
One you have all the spikes attached where you want them, fasten off any loose ends, cut additional yarn, weave in and you are all done.

All done. One super special DinoRAWR crocheted hat. This pattern is dedicated to my little Juvenile Arthritis hero Gavin.

This crochet pattern was designed in honor of and for a little Juvenile Arthritis hero of mine, Gavin.  He is a big dinosaur fan so I figured I would make something special for him.  Thus the Dinosaur Friend applique for beanie hats was born.  You can use it on tons of other projects too. I plan on using it on some bibs in the near future and maybe a crocheted tote bag for my nephew to take to school.

I am still a beginner at writing patterns so if anything is confusing please let me know and I will try to straighten it out for you.  I would say in my own crocheting I’m only advanced beginner to intermediate so I think this crochet pattern will work well for even those that just recently picked up crochet hooks. Happy crafting!

Hat Base: using main color yarn of your choice

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to get started on making this a dinosaur friend hat. :)
Taking contrast color yarn, attach to bottom of last round of beanie with a sl st. Ch 1 and work 1 sc in to each st around. Sl st to top of first st in round.

Dinosaur friend applique: using contrast color yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 (does not count as a st) before placing 10 dc. Sl st in to top of first st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2, place 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in to top of first st. (20 dc)
Round 3: Sl st in first st, in next st sc, ch 9, sc in 2nd ch from hook, in following ch st place 1 hdc and 1 dc, 3 dc in following st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 st. Sl st into stitch on circle from round 2.
Continuing from where you left off at neck working counter clockwise, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 st, sc in next. Sl st in to next 3 st.
Now starting at tail sc in next st to start top of tail. Ch 8. Sc in bottom of second ch from hook , 2 sc in next 3 st, 1 sc in next 3 st. Sl st back in to main circle.
Sl st in next 2 st, ch 3, sl st down side of last st, 2 tc in next st, sl st up side of st and back into body round. Sl st in next 2 st, Chain 3, tc in same , 2 tc in next st, sl st up side of last st joining back into dinosaur’s body.
Sl st up side to base of neck joining of dino. Ch 1, 2 sc in first neck st, 1 sc in next 2 st, sctog next 2 st, end with 3 sc at top of head to round it out.
Cut yarn with an extra EXTRA long tail in order to sew this applique  securely on to the hat.  I tend to go for roughly three times the perimeter length by rough sight estimate.

Finishing off:
Using the yarn needle use the tail to secure the dinosaur friend crocheted applique on to your beanie hat.  I just do a simple in and out weaving the two pieces together. It lays more flat when finished.
One thing I do often is to use straight pins to hold the applique in place. My hands aren’t the best so the appliques or features I attach tend to move around a bit while I’m sewing and I can’t stand for it to be crooked. 😉
Cut off any lose ends after fastening off to finish off this project.
All done. One super special Dinosaur Friend Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern dedicated to my little Juvenile Arthritis hero Gavin.

The Great Juvenile Arthritis Kid Fun Hat Project or Fun Hat Project for Short

free crochet hat patterns inspired by kids with Juvenile Arthritis

Arthritis Awareness Project - The Great Juvenile Arthritis Kid Crochet Fun Hat Project or Fun Hat Project for Short

I have met so many amazing children battling Juvenile Arthritis through my health activism and advocacy for Autoimmune Arthritis thanks to RA Chicks.

So in honor of them, I’m making each one them their very own hat design, made specifically for them and named after them.  I want them to each know how special they are and how much they inspire me to keep going each day.

I have learned more from living well with health conditions from them in the past few years then I did in a lifetime before.  Nothing puts life in a better perspective then seeing them smile and laugh through it all.

I hope that my hats bring some additional needed smiles and happiness through the mail.  Do you know a JA kid in the US that should get a special hat? Let me know!

You can see all the free crochet hat patterns in the Fun Hat Project for Juvenile Arthritis Kids here.
