After playing the Adventure of Tintin video game recently I was inspired to make Snowy into a character hat.  He is so cute.  I used his original drawings from the Tintin comic book illustrations to make this hat come to live versus the video game version.  I like how his features stand out more this way, especially with the eyebrows. You don’t have to be a comic or video game fan to like Snowy. He is an adorable all white terrier that is Tintin’s little sidekick on his adventures.  He makes a cute hat for children, boys or girls, adults, comic book lovers and more.  I made the hat in this pattern and as shown in pictures for one of my nephews.  I think I’m going to be making a matching Tintin hat in the near future too. :)

Don’t know about Snowy or Tintin? You can learn more about them here.

Want to check out the video game? This is the game I was talking about here. (P.S. It’s been out for awhile so it’s really cheap now!)

You can also watch episodes of his cartoon online here!

I hope you like this hat and enjoy making your own. Happy crafting!

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized(Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color white yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start creating your beanie into a Snowy hat. :)

Snout back *optional*: using white yarn
Note: This step is an optional step but one I highly recommend as it will prevent stuffing from slipping between stitches on to the wearers head when wearing hat as it stretches when worn. It can make it a bit itchy so I take this extra step to keep it where the stuffing belongs. :)
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull the circle closed.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the following 9 st.  Sl st in top of 1st st in round.  (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st* repeating * around for next 18 st around.  Sl st in top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Fasten off.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Round 1:  In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle fully closed. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 hdc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 hdc in 1st st and 2 hdc in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 hdc)
Fasten off.

Snout: using white yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull the circle closed.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the following 9 st.  Sl st in top of 1st st in round.  (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st* repeating * around for next 18 st around.  Sl st in top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 dc in 1st st and each of the following 29 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Round 5: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in the 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 29 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st.  (30 sc)
Before you cut the yarn, make sure you leave a yarn tail long enough to be able to sew the snout on to the beanie hat *and* the snout back on the opening of the snout back area before attaching to hat if you choose that optional step.  Pull yarn through last loop on hook after cutting yarn and place to side until needed in finishing steps.

(20 hdc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 19 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 hdc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 sc)

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using white yarn
Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (2 dc)
Row 2: Place 2 dc in both st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (4 dc)
Row 3:  Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 3 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (5 dc)
Row 4: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 4 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (6 dc)
Row 5: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 5 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.    (7 dc)
Row 6: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 6 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (8 dc)
Fasten off.
Repeat process above for the second ear front.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (2 hdc)
Row 2: Place 2 hdc in both st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (4 hdc)
Row 3:  Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in the next 3 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (5 hdc)
Row 4: Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in the next 4 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (6 hdc)
Fasten off.
Repeat process above for the second ear front.

Ear Back and Assembly (Make 2): using white yarn and completed ear fronts from previous steps
Repeat Rows 1-6 from Ear fronts but do not fasten off at end of Row 6 as you have with the ear fronts. Ch 1 and turn. Place one completed ear front in front of the ear back you are working on, lining up the stitches.
Row 7:  Place 1 sc in each st around and in each corner make the following: (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc). Continue process around the perimeter of both pieces until you are back to the 1st st in this row. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in row.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a tail that will be long enough to secure the ear on the top of the beanie hat during assembly. Once you cut yarn, pull through last loop on hook and place to side until needed.
Repeat the above process for second ear

Shining Light Spot for Nose: using white yarn
Make a chain of 3. Sl st in last ch from hook. Leave short yarn tail before cutting yarn and pulling through loop on hook. Place to side until needed in assembly.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, make a large knot with white yarn to represent the shining light spot instead of above instructions leaving a short yarn tail to attach during assembly.

Nose: using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 and place the following stitches in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish shaped circle closed. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (12 st total)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st 2 st, 2 sc in next 3 st, 1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next 3 st and 1 sc in last st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st worked in round. (18 st total)
Leave a yarn tail long enough to be able to sew the nose in place on the front of the snout during assembly before cutting your yarn and pull through last loop on hook.  Place to side until needed.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, skip round 2 and just make round 1 for his nose.

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 and place the following sts in this order: 2 sc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish circle closed. Sl st in the top of the first st in round. (12 st total)
Leave a yarn tail length long enough to sew the eye on the hat during assembly process before cutting yarn and pulling tail through last loop on hook. Place to side until needed in assembly.
Repeat this process for second eye.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for a toddler sized hat, you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 st total)

Eyebrows (Make 2): using black yarn
Make a chain of 6. Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail long enough to sew his eyebrows in place during assembly before pulling through loop on hook and placing to side. Repeat instructions for second eyebrow.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, leave a small length of black yarn to the side to freehand stitch on skinny eyebrows on top of the eyes during assemble instead of chain instructions given above.

Finishing off steps:
Starting with the nose and snout assembly, use your yarn needle to take the yarn tail left on your shining light spot for nose and sew it on to the top left portion of the black nose. You can see my pictures on how I placed mine to look more like Snowy.  Once you have secured it in place, pull yarn to the backside of the black nose and fasten off.
Now take the black yarn tail left on your nose from previous step and using the yarn needle sew it in desired place on the front of the nose snout.   I placed mine just above the center of the front so it would be more near top like comic pictures but feel free to play around with your placement to find what you like the best.  Once it is secure, pull yarn to the inside of the snout and fasten off.
Next up use your yarn needle and the extra long white yarn tail on the snout piece to attach it to your snout to the bottom front of your beanie hat.  If you have opted to do the optional snout back, take the time to stitch that over opening first before sewing it on to the beanie hat.  You want to stop 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around stuff your nose/snout to desired fullness with the fibefill stuffing. Try not to overstuff this feature as it will bubble and can cause the area it is attached to on the beanie hat to sag or bunch. Not cute.  You just want to stuff it enough for it to hold the shape of the snout.   Once fully secured in place, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now take one of the tails left on an eye and use the yarn needle to sew it in desired place above the snout.  I placed mine just above the snout as you can see in pictures but you can move them around a little to see what works best for your hat.   Once sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.  Repeat for second eye.
Next you are going to use the tail on one of Snowy’s eyebrows and use your yarn needle to sew it in place above one of the eyes.  I did mine in an upside “U” shape, kind of a curve, as you can see in pictures.  Once you have sewed them on to your liking, pull yarn to the inside of the hat and fasten off.  Repeat process for second eyebrow.
Now all that is left is to attach Snowy’s ears.  If you want your ears to be more upright like in most of his comics, place the ears closer to the top center of the beanie hat when attaching them.  I wanted my ear tips to flip forward like in comics so I didn’t use anything inside the ears to keep them fully upright like a pipe cleaner that I would use during ear assembly for bunnies and such.  If you want your ears to be more downward floppy, place more to the sides of the head.  You can also tilt the ears so the front concave part is facing forward while on the side of the head too.  You can see where I placed mine in pictures below.  Once your ear is sewn in place, pull yarn to inside.  At this point on features that are on top of hat, I run another short row of stitches and knots on the inside to support them but it’s mandatory.  Fasten off and repeat the process for the second ear.
Go ahead and double check your work for any tails or loose ends you might of missed during process.  If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! One fun Snowy hat that Tintin fans and children will love. :)

This was a requested hat for my Mom, who is a teacher, to wear during reading this book to her classroom. The kids love seeing all the hats for each book or project so it’s fun for me to make these book characters come to life in crochet. :) This is my crochet interpretation of the Lorax based on the movie character instead of the book character from Dr. Suess.

It’s a fun hat to make, wear or give as a gift to the Dr Suess lover in your life. I tried to make it simple and easy for even beginners but if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. Happy crafting!

Lorax Dr Suess Character Hat Crochet Pattern (6)

Finishing off:
We will start from the bottom up on adding our features to this Lorax character hat. I find it is better to do it this way so that you take the worry out of running out of room and scrunching features together if you run tight on space. You can always move the next feature up but there is no moving down.
Taking the tail from your Lorax’s mustache whiskers area and your
sew the mustache securing in place a little above the bottom of the hat. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed my own. Once that is completed, pull your yarn to the inside of the hat and finish off.
Taking the tail left on his nose piece and using your yarn needle sew the nose in place on the top center of his attached mustache / whiskers area that you sewed on in previous step. Once sewn in place completely, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.
You now want to take the yarn tail left on one eye pupil and sew it in place with your yarn needle onto one green eye color. After attached, pull yarn to back of eye color and fasten it off. Repeat this process for the second pupil.
Take the green yarn tail from one of his eye color pieces and secure it in desired place on one eye white sewing it together with your yarn needle. Once done, pull yarn to the back of the eye white and fasten off. Repeat this process for the second eye color.
Taking the white yarn tail from one assembled eye use your yarn needle to sew the eye in place off to one side of nose above the whisker area. Once secured in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off. Repeat process for second eye, equal distance on the opposite side of the nose.
Taking the tail from one your Lorax’s eyebrows and your yarn needle to sew the eyebrow securing in place a little above one attached eye. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed my own. Once that is completed, pull your yarn to the inside of the hat and finish off. Repeat this process for the second eyebrow placing it over the second eye.
Now take the time to check over your work for any yarn tails or loose ends you may have missed during assembly. If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off.
All done. :) One cool Lorax hat ready to wear.

Here are some pictures I have taken to show how the Lorax looks worn once it is completed:

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Clifford the Red dog is one of my favorite book characters from my young childhood.  When I started thinking up book characters to turn into character hats for my mother to wear in her class during reading time, he was on top of my list.  I have been having so much fun making hats and items for her classroom. They have been a big hit with both the children and the teachers.  I had to take a break to work on some special projects and the kids all started asking if I was okay because they were missing out on new hats. 😉

This is an advanced beginner friendly pattern.  If you can crochet in the round you will find this easier than you think.  I hope you enjoy bringing your Clifford hat together like I have.  I tend to fall in love with all of my hats during the creation process. Happy crafting!

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Crochet Pattern (10)

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peas Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern, which you can find  here as a foundation for the projectWant it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Clifford the Red Dog children’s book character hat! :)

*Snout / Nose Back*: using red yarn – optional
This step is an optional step in creating this character hat but one I highly recommend.  When you wear crochet hats, the stitches spread open to accommodate heads. This is how they stay on.  So when you have large stuffed features, it helps to have a backing to that area to prevent stuffing from escaping on to the wearer’s head, which can be rather itchy. 😉 It also helps keep the life of the hat longer.
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle.  Pull circle closed and sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in following st*  repeating * pattern around through round. Sl st to top of 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Fasten off.

*The feature above works well on toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For 6 to 12 month sizes, do the above in hdc stitches instead of dc to scale down the features to a more appropriate size.  For newborn to 6 month sizes, do the above in hdc and eliminate round 3 increase for this feature.

Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye whites directly on to the beanie during hat assembly.
Repeat process for second eye.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will work the st in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc. Sl st closed. (9 st total)  and for 2nd round switch all dc stitches to hdc.

Fasten off.
Repeat process for second ear.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes, switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

Ear Back and Assembly (Make 2): using main color red yarn
Repeat instructions for Rows 1-14 of the Ear Fronts but do not fasten off at the end of Row 14.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 10: Place a finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on, lining up the st.  ( I like to use safety pins to mark the ends of mine so I don’t have to stop and keep checking to see if they line up as I can be a bit OCD about that kind of thing. 😉 but it is not a necessary step.)  Now work a round of 1 sc in each st around perimeter of Clifford’s ear. When you reach the bottom of ear you can make 2 sc in each of the 5 center bottom st to give it a nice rounded appearance like I have in my picture.
Make sure you leave a tail that is long enough to secure the ear in place on the beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through last stitch and placing to side.
Repeat process for second ear.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes,  switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

Hair on top of head: using black yarn
(first hair) Ch 10.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the next 6 sc. Sl st in next ch from hook.
(second hair) Leaving last ch unworked for now, ch 7. Make 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and following 5 ch. Sl st in last ch from hook previously unworked.
(third hair) Ch 6.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 4 ch. Sl st back in to the starting st for this hair.
Make sure you leave a long enough yarn tail on your hair piece to attach to the top of Clifford’s head during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through last stitch and putting to side until needed.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes. For newborn to 12 month sizes,  switch to following instructions instead of above:
(first hair) Ch 8.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the next 4 sc. Sl st in next ch from hook.
(second hair) Leaving last ch unworked for now, ch 5. Make 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and following 3 ch. Sl st in last ch from hook previously unworked.
(third hair) Ch 4.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 2 ch. Sl st back in to the starting st for this hair.

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Crochet Pattern (19)

Finishing off:
Starting off we will be assembling the nose/ snout part of Clifford.  Take the tail left on the black nose for him and your yarn needle to sew it in desired location near the top of the front of the nose/snout piece.  Don’t make it too high or it won’t show when wearing it from the front and too low you won’t be able to stitch the mouth on.  You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine.  Once you have it secured in place, use the leftover yarn tail to freehand stitch on his mouth lines.  Once completed, pull your yarn to inside of nose/snout and fasten off.
Now take the red yarn tail from your nose/snout piece and use the yarn needle to attach it to the nose/snout back piece (if you did this step) or on to the beanie hat if skipped nose/snout backing.  Stop about 3/4 of the way around to lightly stuff the nose/snout piece with the fiberfill stuffing. You just want to do enough so that you get the full rounded appearance you desire but don’t over stuff it.  If you overfill this feature it will bubble up in the back making the area around the hat where it is attached bunch up or sag when wearing it.   Once you have completely assembled the snout and attached it to the beanie, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.
Taking the tail from one eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it on place on top of your eye white. I placed mine near the bottom of the eye to be more like the illustrations I found of Clifford. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine but feel free to play around with your placement as you desire.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to the back of the eye white before fastening off. Repeat for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my Clifford hat.   Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next using the tail left behind on one of the Clifford’s assembled ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. (You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.)  If you want longer hanging ears place lower on side of beanie. For shorter ones, place higher up on beanie hat.  Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off any extra length.  Repeat this process for the second ear.
All that is left now is his three little hairs piece on top of his head.  Taking the black yarn tail from his hairs and your yarn needle, sew them in place on top of the beanie hat.  For my character hat I placed it in the center of beginning circle of round 1 for the beanie base but feel free to move it around to see where you like it best before attaching it.  Once fully attached, pull yarn to inside of beanie and fasten off.
Now take the time to check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so now if you find any.

Here are some pictures to show how the completed Clifford the Red Dog book character hat looks like worn from different angles once you are all done:

My Diary of a Wimpy Kid Greg hat was such a big hit at auction at the school my Mom teaches at, I had to make several more Greg hats to make everyone happy. One young kid is a big Rodrick fan so I designed this hat just for him.  I was in a rush to get it to him before the end of the school year so I didn’t get the best pictures but hopefully they still let you see the details to try your own.

You can learn more about Diary of a Wimpy Kid here or see the book series here.  It really is a great children’s book series.

My nephew took one look at the Greg and Roderick hats before pushing them to the top of the list he keeps adding to of hats I MUST make for him. lol  He apparently wants one of everything I make. Auntie Niki to the rescue. :)

Make 1 chain of 5 ch and leave tail of yarn to sew the sides of the smile in to place on each end of the smile chain from previous step. Put to side until needed during assembly.

*These features will work on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following: For main smile piece : Ch 12 instead of 18.  For smile sides, ch 2 instead of 5.

Place 2 sc in each of these 5 st before proceeding down other side of nose to corner with 1 sc in each st again.  When you reach bottom corner, cut yarn and fasten off.  You should have the 5 st at the base of the nose unworked with black like as seen in my pictures.

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color white yarn and black contrast yarn for last round
Repeat rounds 1-2 of Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at end of round 2.  You want to leave a long enough tail at start of Round 1 of the Ear Backs so that you can sew the ears on to place on hat during assembly process.
Placing one ear front in front of your ear back you are working on, continue working the following through both pieces at same time.
Round 3:  Attach black contrast yarn with a sl st in last st worked. Ch 1 before working 1 sc in first 6 st, then alternate 1 sc then 2 sc repeatedly until back at first st in round. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.

Leave a tail long enough to sew eyebrows in place, cut yarn, pull through and put to side until needed in assembly.
Repeat process for second eyebrow.

*These features will work well on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following:
Make a ch of 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and place 1 sc in each of the following 3 st. (4 sc)

Finishing off:
Since I like to start adding my features from the bottom up we will start with Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick’s smile. I find that by working from bottom up you get a better idea of how much space you have during the process.  Otherwise you may find yourself scrunching up features at the bottom if you haven’t left enough space in your process. By working upwards you always have extra room as you can just move the next feature up a little higher if need be.
You are now going to use this the tail left on the large smile chain from before and your yarn needle to sew the main smile piece into the desired place on the hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed his smile my own hat in a lopsided grin.) Once you have secured it into place, bring the yarn into the inside of the beanie hat and finish off.
Now repeat this process to the smaller side smile chain on the right side to give his lopsided smile.
Next we will work on attaching the nose that was assembled previously.  Use the tail left behind and needle to secure the nose piece in place on to the beanie hat.  Pull yarn in to the inside of beanie once sewn on and fasten off.
Next we will work on the his eyes.  Take the yarn tail left from one eye and sew it into place on to the hat. Note that you want the oval of eyes to have the narrow sides on top and bottom whereas the long ends facing sides.  Once it’s sewn on, pull yarn in to the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat for second eye.
Now that your eyes are in place, take the tail from one eyebrow and your yarn needle to to secure it in place over one eye. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of beanie before fastening off.  Repeat process for second eyebrow.
Now you need to attach Rodrick’s ears on to the beanie.  Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from when you crocheted the ears before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position.  Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off.  Repeat process for second ear.
Picking up one of Rodrick’s pieces of hair you created before, use the tail left and yarn needle to secure them in to place on the top of the beanie hat.  I centered my middle hair right in the 1st Round circle on my own beanie hat but you can place it in your desired location to best fit your hat.  Once the hair has been securely sewn on, pull yarn into the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat process with second and third hair, positioning them on either side of your middle hair.
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. I would love to see your version if you make one, just drop me a line. :) All done now!

This hat project was a special request to make for the auction at my Mother’s school to help raise funds.  I wasn’t sure how I could translate an all white and black sketched character but eventually it came to me.  Greg is such a cute character from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series.  If you have a Wimpy Kid fan in your life, this makes a perfectly fun gift.  I’ve even had adults wanting to don a Greg hat. He has been a big hit with both the teachers and the students at the school so far.

I can’t wait to try this procedure on some more comic cartoon characters I might not have attempted it on before.  I’m still new at pattern writing so if you have any questions, please let me know so I can sort it out.  Happy crafting!

Before you cut your yarn make sure you leave a tail long enough sew your eyes on to your beanie hat securely. Cut yarn and pull through tightly before placing to side until needed during assembly process.
Repeat process for second eye.

Smile: Using black contrast yarn
Make 1 chain of  18 ch and leave tail to sew this main part of the smile in to place when assembling beanie hat.
Make 1 chain of 5 ch and leave tail of yarn to sew the sides of the smile in to place on each end of the smile chain from previous step. Put to side until needed during assembly.

Nose Pieces (make 2): using white main color yarn
Row 1:  Ch 7. Place 1 dc in third ch from hook and following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn.  (5 dc)
Row 2:  Place 1 dc in first st and following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 3:  Place 1 dc in first st and following 4 st. Ch 1 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 4: Sc in first st, hdc in next st, dc in third st, hdc in next st, and sc in last st. Cut yarn, pull through and fasten off.(5 st total)
Repeat this process for the second Nose Piece but before you start your original chain on Nose piece 2 make sure you leave a tail long enough sew your nose in place on to your beanie hat once completed. Fasten off at end of Round 4.

Nose Contrast Outline: using black contrast yarn
Round 1: Attach black yarn to one bottom corner of nose with a sl st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st up to top 5 st of nose tip curve. Place 2 sc in each of these 5 st before proceeding down other side of nose to corner with 1 sc in each st again.  When you reach bottom corner, cut yarn and fasten off.  You should have the 5 st at the base of the nose unworked with black like as seen in my pictures.

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using main color white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc.  Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and in each of the following 8 st. Place 1 sc in each of the last three st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (21 st total)
Cut yarn and fasten off. You will need this during Ear Back assembly so don’t put it too far away.
Repeat process for second ear.

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color white yarn and black contrast yarn for last round
Repeat rounds 1-2 of Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at end of round 2.  You want to leave a long enough tail at start of Round 1 so that you can sew the ears on to place on hat during assembly process.
Now repeat process for second ear.

Three Hairs on top of Head: using black contrast yarn
Round 1: Ch 9. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 7 st and sl st back in the last ch.
Round 2: Ch 13. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 11 st. Sl st  back in the last ch.
Round 3: Ch 9. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 7 st. Sl st back in the last ch. Ch 1 and turn.
Round 4:  Sl st around outside perimeter of three hairs and base. You will place 1 sl st in each st but 3 sl st in ends of hair to give  more of a rounded appearance to the hairs.  After completely going around sl st back into 1st st from round.
Leave a long enough tail to sew your hair in place on top of your beanie during assembly. Cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until this is needed during finishing off steps below.

Finishing off:
Since I like to start adding my features from the bottom up we will start with Diary of a Wimpy Kid Greg’s smile.
(You can reference my pictures to see how I placed his smile my own hat.) Once you have secured it into place, bring the yarn into the inside of the beanie hat and finish off.
Now repeat this process to the smaller side smile chain on the right side to give his lopsided signature smile.
Next we will work on attaching the nose that was assembled previously.  Use the tail left behind and needle to secure the nose piece in place on to the beanie hat.  I lightly stuffed mine to give it more a 3D appearance but it is not necessary.
Now you need to attach Greg’s ears on to the beanie.  Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from when you crocheted the ears before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position.  Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off.  Repeat process for second ear.
Picking up Greg’s hair pieces you created before, use the tails and yarn needle to secure them in to place on the top of the beanie hat.  I tend to center mine on the 1st Round circle on my own beanie hat but you can place it in your desired location to best fit your hat.  Once the hair has been securely sewn on, pull yarn into the inside of the hat before finishing off.
Note: My pattern is for floppy pieces of hair. If you want them to stay upright and stiff, try adding a black pipe cleaner in the last round around the perimeter of the hair.  It’s a lightweight and washable solution. :)
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. I would love to see your version if you make one, just drop me a line. :)

Skippyjon Jones Siamese Cat Book Character Beanie Hat Free Crochet Pattern

When I started making hats for my mother’s classroom, Skippyjon Jones was brought up a few dozen times at least. Apparently he is a very popular children’s book character and my nephew was horrified that I did not know who he was. lol

So I ended up making up this guy for my nephew and  one in adult size for the auction at my mother’s school to raise funds.  I donated this in addition to a Winnie the pooh hat, a Keroppi hat, and a Diary of a Wimpy Kid hat.   I was shocked to find out about the bidding war going over these character hats.  Almost all sold for $50 to $60 each!  So many people were unhappy that they did not win, they begged my mother for me to make more for them to purchase.  I guess you can say I now have been recruited to make an entire army of SkippyJon Jones hats..

Eyes  Pupils (Make 2): Using black yarn

*For infant through 12 months sizes, make start with a chain of 12 and work hdc stitches instead of dc throughout ear front.

Ear Back (Make 2): using darkest brown yarn
Leave a long enough yarn tail to secure ear when finished at start of your ear backs. I tend to estimate roughly 3 to 4 times the length I will be stitching to be on the safe side.
Starting off leaving the tail, repeat rows 1-7 from Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at the end of Row 7.  Ch 1 and turn.  Place a completed ear front in front of the ear back you are working on, lining up the stitches.
Row 8: With the lighter colored ear front facing you, work 2 sc in to the top st of both pieces, work 1 sc in each st down side of ear pieces, working 3 sc in each of the bottom corners. Continue working 1 sc in each side stitch of ears up to 1st st. Place 1 sc in same sp as 1st st in round. Sl st and fasten off.

Skippyjon Jones Book Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Zoom In on Face Details

Finishing off:
You are now going to use this the tail left on your finished nose from before and your yarn needle to sew the nose on to the face area piece into the desired place on the hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once you have secured it into place, use remaining tail to freehand stitch your mouth lines from bottom of nose (see picture above) before bringing the yarn to the back of the face area and finish off.
Now you have a completed face area piece, so using the tail left on your face area from before, sew your face area securely in place on your beanie hat.  I normally start mine at the bottom roughly 1 dc round up from bottom of the beanie but feel free to play around with it.
Next we will work on Skippyjon Jones’ eyes.  Take the yarn tail left from one eye pupil and sew it into place on to blue eye color piece .  Once it’s sewn on, pull yarn in to the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat for second eye.
You should now have two completed eyes and each should still have a long blue yarn tail. You want to use this and your darning / tapestry needle now to sew them in place on each side of the narrow nose color from face area on to beanie hat.  Once secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie before fastening off.
Now all that is left is to attach Skippyjon’s ears on to the beanie.  Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from your assembled ears you crocheted before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position.  Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off.  Repeat process for second ear.
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. Then you are all done. :) One completed

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your own Pooh beanie hat!

*Note: If you are going to do this in newborn / infant/ up to 1 year old sizes, switch to a G hook for the features instead of the J to scale them down in size or eliminate one increase row from each feature worked in the round.

Eyes (Make 2): Using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle ch 1 before placing the following st in to the circle as follows: 1 sc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 2 sc. Pull circle closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 st total)

Eyebrows (Make 2): Using black yarn
Make 2 chains of 5 each. You want to make sure you leave a little bit of a tail on each to sew it into place with your yarn needle during assembly.

Smile: Using black yarn
Make 1 chain of  25 ch and leave tail to sew this main part of the smile in to place.
Make 2 chains of 5 ch and leave tail of yarn to sew the sides of the smile in to place on each end of the smile chain from previous step.

Black Nose: using black yarn
Round 1:  In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order into the circle: 1 sc, 2 hdc, 3 sc, 2 hdc, 1 sc. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (9 st total)

Before you cut your yarn make sure you leave a tail long enough sew your nose in place on to your beanie hat.

Nose back:  in main color yarn

Note:  This is an optional step but I do recommend doing this step as it keeps your stuffing in the snout and now falling through the stitches when the hat is worn since they stretch to conform to head.

Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc.  Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and in each of the following 9 st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (20 dc)

Pull yarn through and fasten off.  Put to side until needed in nose assembly.

Nose/snout: in main color yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc.  Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in first st and in each of the following 7 st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (16 sc)
Round 3:  Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st then 1 sc in next*  repeat * pattern until end of round. (24 sc)
Round 4:  Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st then 1 sc in next 2 st*  repeat * pattern until end of round. (32 sc)
Round 5-8:  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and in each of the following 31 st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (32 sc)
Pull yarn through leaving a long enough tail to sew the nose back (optional) on to the opening of snout and then directly on to the beanie hat.

Assembling Nose/ Snout:
Pick up your Black Nose, using tail and yarn needle secure it in to place on the top front of the snout. See my pictures for placement of mine.

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using main color gold / yellow yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc.  Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in first st and in each of the following 7 st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (16 sc)
Round 3:  Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st then 1 sc in next*  repeat * pattern until end of round. (24 sc)
Cut yarn and fasten off

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color gold/ yellow yarn
Repeat rounds 1-3 of Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at end of round 3.  Placing one ear front in front of your ear back you are working on, continue working the following through both pieces at same time.
Round 4: Ch 1 before working 1 sc in first 6 st, then alternate 1 sc then 2 sc repeatedly until back at first st in round. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew your ear in place on the beanie hat before cutting yarn and pulling through.

Next we will work on the Winnie’s eyebrows.  Take the yarn tail left from one eyebrow chain and sew it into place on to the hat above the eyes you just attached.  Once it’s sewn on, pull yarn in to the inside of the hat before finishing off.   Repeat for second eyebrow.
Now all that is left is to attach Pooh’s ears on to the beanie.  Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from when you crocheted the ears before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position.  Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off.  Repeat process for second ear.

Curious George Beanie Hat for Story Reading Time Free Crochet Pattern

When I started brainstorming on book characters to bring to life in the form of crocheted beanie hats for my Mother to wear during story reading time in her classroom, Curious George kept popping up. I adore anything monkey related so Curious George quickly made it to the top of my list.

Though it may look complicated it really is not too hard to work out. I think it will be a great crochet project for advanced beginners and up. Get your crochet on and make a fun Curious George crochet beanie hat of your own. Here is the picture I used for modeling this crocheted hat after:

Pattern Instructions:

These features will fit most sizes from toddler up to adult male. If you are going to attempt this on an infant size I recommend omitting a few rounds from face area and start with a chain 4 less.  You can also switch to a smaller hook like D or E to scale down the size of the features without changing up the pattern. Hope you like this as well.

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy  Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern which you can find here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Hat Base: Using “J” Hook and dark brown yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Contrast Band Hat: using lighter brown yarn

Starting off we are going to put a simple contrast color band to the bottom of the hat.  For this sl st your lighter brown yarn (the same to be used for face area part) to a st on the last round. Ch 1, then work 1 sc in each st around, sl st to top of first st in round before finishing off.

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your own Curious George hat for reading time, costume or even everyday fun. This one is for my Mom to wear in her classroom and it has been a giant hit with the students. Put it to the side until you are ready to finish off the hat and assemble pieces.

Face Area: using contrast lighter brown yarn
Round 1:   Ch 15. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of following 15 ch. Ch 1 and turn. The Ch 1 does not count as a st through this part of pattern. (15 sc)
Round 2:  Place 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 13 st and 2 sc in last st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (17 sc)
Round 3:  Place 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 15 st and 2 sc in last st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (19 sc)
Round 4-7:  Place 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (19 sc)
Round 8:  Sctog first two st together, 1 sc in next 15 st and sctog last 2 st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (17 sc)
Round 9:  Sctog first two st together, 1 sc in next 13 st and sctog last 2 st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (15 sc)
Round 10:  Sctog first two st together, 1 sc in next 11 st and sctog last 2 st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (13 sc)
Round 11:  Sctog first two st together, 1 sc in next 9 st and sctog last 2 st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (11 sc)
Round 12:  Sctog first two st together, 1 sc in next 7 st and sctog last 2 st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (9 sc)
Round 13-14:  Place 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (9 sc)
Round 15:  Place 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next 7 st and 2 sc in last st of round. Ch 1 and turn. (11 sc)
Round 16:  Sctog first two st, sc in next 2 st, sl st in each of the next 3 st, sc in next 2 st, sctog last 2 st in round. Ch 1 and turn.  (6 sc)
Round 17:  Sctog first two st, sc in next 2 st, sctog last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Round 18: Work a round of sc around the perimeter of the face area to give it a more well defined and polished look. Sl st in center st between eye indent on top of face area.
Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to be able to securely sew on your face area on to the beanie hat.  Put face area aside until you are ready to assemble hat.

*From now on you will be using the “H” hook to complete your crocheted features.*

Eye Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle.  Pull circle closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. Note: The starting 1 ch in all sc rounds do not count as a stitch. They are used to hide seams better. (6 sc)
Round 2:  Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in first st and each of the following 5 st around. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (12 sc)
Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew eyes on to face area during assembly time.  I tend to judge about 2 to 2 1/2 times the perimeter of what I want to attach to my hats.  Put eye whites to the side until ready to assemble.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 4 sc. Pull circle closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (4 sc)
Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to secure the pupils on to the eye whites during assembly. Put to the side until ready for assembly.

Upper liner to eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
With black yarn, ch 5. Pull yarn through leaving a long enough tail to sew on with your large blunt eye tapestry / yarn needle before cutting yarn. Put to side until assembly.

Ear Front (Make 2): using lighter brown contrast yarn for ear fronts
Round 1:   In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle.  Pull circle closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. Note: The starting 1 ch in all sc rounds do not count as a stitch. They are used to hide seams better. (6 sc)
Round 2:  Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in first st and each of the following 5 st around. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (12 sc)
Round 3:   Ch 1 before putting 2 sc in first st, *1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next*  Repeat * until you have 2 st left. Sl st in last 2 st. (15 sc)
Round 4:  Ch 1 before putting 2 sc in first st, *1 sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next*  Repeat * until you have 3 st left. Sl st in last 3 st. (18 sc)
Cut yarn, pull through and finish off. No tail needed for ear fronts in assembly so cut off any additional length after finishing off.

Ear Back (Make 2): using lighter brown contrast yarn for ear backs
Rounds 1-4: Do the same as you just did on ear fronts but do not cut yarn or finish off. Ch 1 and turn.
Round 5-6:  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in first st and following 17 st. Ch 1 and turn. (18 sc)
Pull yarn through leaving a long enough tail to secure ear to ear front and then sew on to your Curious George crochet hat.

Nose: using black yarn for nose
Ch 8 before pulling through yarn.  Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to secure your smile on to George’s face area.

Mouth:  This will require three pieces chain stitches with tails made with the black yarn to sew them in place on the face area.
Main smile piece – With black yarn, ch 15 before pulling through yarn.  Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to secure your smile on to George’s face area.
Smile sides (Make 2) With the black yarn, ch 6 before cutting off yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew your smile sides on to the face of Curious George.

Assembly:
A little tip- When sewing on features for a beanie hat, I work from the bottom up.  That way you can judge your space better and don’t end up with a bunch of features squished in the bottom if you run out of room.
I use straight pins to pin my features in place to plan their positions but that is not necessary. You can eyeball it.

Smile assembly:  You are now going to work on the face area starting at the bottom and working up.  Using your blunt eye yarn needle and tail from main smile piece, sew the smile in a curve -like a smile ).  Make sure you leave enough room to attach the sides of the smile next.  Use the ch 8 for the nose, sew nose into place on the face area above the smile in an upside down frowny face like curve. (see pictures below for clarification on this positioning)

Eye assembly: Take the tail from one black eye pupil and use your yarn needle to sew it in place near the bottom of an eye white, not center to get George’s look.  Once attached to eye white, pull yarn through to back and finish off.
Now take the tail from the eye liner ch 5 to sew it along the top rim of eye.  Pull yarn through to back and finish off.
Now that pupil and eye liner have been assembled to an eye, use your needle and tail left on the eye white to securely sew your eye in to desired position onto the face area. (See pictures below to see my placement) Pull yarn to the back of face area before finishing off and cutting off any extra length.
Repeat this process for the second eye.

Your Face Area should now be complete and ready to attach! Line it up on the beanie hat in the position you would like it on the front of your beanie hat. I always put my seam from my crocheted beanie hats to the back of the project but you could use the face area to cover most of seam on front if you choose to do so.    Take your yarn needle and use the tail left previously on face area  to sew it on to the Curious George hat.  Once you have it secured, pull yarn through to inside of hat before finishing off and cutting off any additional tail length if necessary.

Ear assembly:  Place ear front in front of ear back.  Using your large blunt eye yarn / tapestry needle and the tail you left on ear back to sew both together all around ear.  Your yarn should now be at back in corner of ear bottom.   Repeat process for second ear.  Then using needle sew the ears into place in the desired location on side of beanie hat.  You can use my pictures below to see where I placed my own.  Cut yarn and finish off.

All done. You now have one completed Curious George crocheted beanie hat ready for story time, costumes or just everyday wearing fun.   You don’t have to be a kid to appreciate how cute this little monkey translates in crochet.  He makes me smile. 😀

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Beanie Hat Free Crochet Pattern for Story Reading Time

My mother, who is a teacher, requested that I make her a hat for reading / story time in her classroom for when she reads The Very Hungry Caterpillar book by Eric Carle.  It’s a classic children’s book that I remember from my own childhood.  So I wanted to make it as close as possible to how the caterpillar on the book cover (see picture below).  I was pretty happy with how it turned out and it was a giant hit in the classroom.

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy  Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern which you can find here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? Hat Base: using red yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your own Very Hungry Caterpillar Beanie!

Contrast Band: using dark green yarn

Starting off we are going to put a simple contrast color band to the bottom of the hat.  For this sl st your Dark Green yarn to a st on the last round. Ch 1, then work 1 sc in each st around, sl st to top of first st in round before finishing off.

Outer Eyes (Make 2): using yellow yarn
Round 1: In Magic Circle, Ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 1 sc, 3 dc, 4 sc, 3 dc and 3 sc. Sl st to top of first st in row.  (8 sc, 6 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st, 2 dc in next, dc in next, 2 dc in following st, sc in each of the 4 sc in a row from previous round, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next, 2 dc in last dc from previous round, 1 sc in each of the last 3 st for round. Sl st in top of first st in row. (8 sc, 10 dc)
Round 3:  Ch 1. 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 3 dc st, 2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next, 1 sc in next 3 dc, 2 sc in last dc, 1 sc in last 3 st. Sl st to top to of first st in row.  (22 sc)
Pull yarn through leaving a long enough tail when cutting so you will have a suitable enough length to secure to hat when sewing on. Put this to side for moment.

Inner Eyes (Make 2): using dark green yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 1 sc, 2 dc, 3 sc, 2 dc and 2 sc. Sl st to top of first st in row. (6 sc, 4 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st st, 2 dc in next 2 st, 1 sc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next two st, 1 sc in last 2 st. Sl st to top of first st in row. (6 sc, 8 dc)
Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to secure on to the center of the yellow eye  back from previous step.  Using yarn needle, place green eye center on top of yellow eye part and sew it in to place. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. :) I just do a basic in and out stitch to weave it together.  Fasten off.
Now take the tail from the yellow eye part and using your yarn needle, secure the finished eyes on to the hat in your desired position. You can see mine from the photos.

Nose:  using dark green yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Sl st in top of first st in row. (3 sc, 3 hdc, 1 dc)
Round 2:  Ch 1 and turn so you can place (1 sc and 1 hdc) into the last hdc st from previous round, in next st (1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc), in next st (1 hdc, 1 sc). Sl st into last st. (2 sc, 4 hdc, 1 dc)
Pull yarn through leaving the last 2 st unworked. Before cutting yarn make sure you have enough of a tail length to now sew on to hat using your yarn needle. You can see my placement of it from pictures.

Antennae (Make 2): Switch to “H” hook (5.00 mm) and bright blue yarn
Round 1: Starting in a magic circle  ch 1 before placing 6 sc in circle. Sl st to top of first st in round. ( 6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, place 2 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of first st in round. (12 sc)
Round 3-7:  Ch 1, place 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of first st in round. (12 sc)
This is a good time to put most of your fiberfill stuffing in the antennae. You can add it as you continue. You want them to have enough stuffing to be able to stand upright but not so much that it makes them heavy and weighed down. Then they won’t stand upright at all.
Round 8: Ch 1, sctog first two sc, *sctog next two st together, continue from * around until end of round. Sl st to top of first st in round. (6 sc)
Round 9-12: Ch 1, place 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of first st in round. (6 sc)
Cut yarn after pulling it through leaving a long enough tail to secure antennae to top of hat.  Using your yarn needle sew your antennae in to place (you can see my placement in pictures below) securely, fasten off any ends.
All done. :) One Very Hungry (and special) Caterpillar Beanie Hat all ready to wear.
