Mario and Luigi Beanie Hats Crochet Pattern

Growing up as a kid in the 80’s (shhh don’t tell anyone how old this geek is getting) I fell in love with the Mario brothers on first sight. I probably spent several hundred hours playing their games as they came out. It was always a favorite of mine so I thought I would make these Mario and Luigi inspired beanies for my nephews to wear and went on to make a Yoshi hat that I will add to my blog soon for the third nephew to wear to be a part of the fun.

These are super easy for beginners to make and a fun but quick project. Go for it!

Mario and Luigi Beanie Hats Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
Red Yarn for Beanie Hat (Mario main color)- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Green Yarn for Beanie Hat (Luigi main color)
White Yarn for Logo Circle
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
hdc – half double crochet (for smaller sizes only) (US)

Pattern Instructions:

Mario Hat Base: using red yarn for main color and white yarn for contrast trim
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the red hat base you are ready to start your Mario hat.
Taking white yarn, attach to the beanie where you left off in last round of hat pattern with a sl st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.

Luigi Hat Base: using green yarn for main color and white yarn for contrast trim
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the green hat base you are ready to start your Luigi hat.
Taking white yarn, attach to the beanie where you left off in last round of hat pattern with a sl st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.

White Logo Circle (same for both Mario and Luigi hats): using white yarn
Round 1: Ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout pattern) before placing 10 dc in a magic circle. Pull circle tight before sl st in top of beginning st. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and 3 dc in the next 9 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in following st* repeat the pattern of * around through last st. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (30 sc)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail in order to sew your eye on to the beanie during assembly process. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed.
*For toddler sized hats, switch round 2 to hdc instead of dc.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, switch rounds 1 and 2 to hdc instead of dc.

Mario “M” letter for logo: using red yarn
Make a ch of 24 . Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew this chain on to your logo circle in the shape of the letter “M” during finishing off stage, before cutting yarn and pulling through stitch.
*For toddler sized hats, make a chain of 20 instead of 24.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a chain of 16 instead of 24.

Luigi “L” letter for logo: using green yarn
Make a ch of 12. Leave a long enough tail pf yarn to be able to sew this chain on to your logo circle in the shape of the letter “L” before cutting yarn and pulling through stitch.
*For toddler sized hats, make a ch of 10 instead of 12.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a ch of 8 instead of 12.

Finishing off:

For Mario Hat:
Using the red yarn tail left on the ch for your letter “M” from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired place in the front center of your logo circle in to the shape of the letter “M”. (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the back of your logo circle before fastening off. Skip down to instructions for both hats.

For Luigi Hat:
Using the red yarn tail left on the ch for your letter “M” from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired place in the front center of your logo circle in to the shape of the letter “M”. (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the back of your logo circle before fastening off. Now work on following pattern directions for both hats.

For Both hats:
Take the tail from your assembled logo in previous steps and your yarn needle to sew the logo on the front of your beanie hat in desired location. You can see where I placed the ones for my hats in the pictures for this post. I find that leaving one or two of the last rounds of dc in your hat base below the bottom of the logo gives it a nice distance to show off the contrast trim and not be so high up that you can’t see it when looking at it worn straight on. Once you have the logo sew securely in place, pull your yarn to the inside of the beanie behind the logo before fastening off.
Now check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. You should be all done now!

Blue’s Clues Puppy Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

Do you know a Blue’s Clues fan? This hat was designed for my Mom to wear in reading time for her class. She’s a teacher of very young students and they all love her hats to match the different books. Blue is such a cute animated puppy and I think Blue looks good in crochet. You can learn more about Blue’s Clues or watch the television show episodes online here.

The hat in pictures is done with the teen / women’s size of the Easy Peasy Double Crochet beanie family pattern but instructions for scaling down features for infants are included. As always my patterns are free and I would love to see how yours turn out! The only part I found tricky was the nose until I got the design down so I think advanced beginner and up for suggested experience level for this pattern.

Blue’s Clues Puppy Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
Light Blue Yarn for Beanie Hat main color and ears- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Black Yarn for eye pupils
White yarn for eye whites
Contrasting Darker Blue Yarn for nose and spots
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Instructions:

Hat Base: in main color lighter blue yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Blue’s Clues hat!

Spot Circles (Make 6): using darker blue yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 dc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your spot in place on your beanie hat during finishing steps. Cut yarn to desired length before pulling through. Set to side until needed for assembly.
Repeat steps above for the rest of the spots needed for pattern.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make 8 hdc instead of 12 dc for spot circles.

Nose: using darker blue yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 4 sc in to the circle. Do not pull circle closed. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Round 2: Place 3 sc in 1st st, (2 hdc and 1 dc) in 2nd st, (1 dc and 2 hdc) in 3rd st, 3 sc in last st. Sl st back in to circle. (12 st total)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing 1 hdc in to the circle, ch 1 and then sl st back in to circle. (This will be the bottom part of the nose between nostril openings.)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew the nose securely in place before cutting yarn and pulling it through. Place to side until nose is needed in finishing process.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will change Round 2 to the following: Place 2 sc in 1st st, 2 hdc in 2nd st, 2 hdc in 3rd st, 2 sc in last st
*For newborn hats, I recommend switching to a smaller hook, like “h” hook, to scale down the size of nose even more.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 4 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (4 sc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye pupil in place on eye white during finishing steps before cutting yarn. Sit to side until needed.
Repeat process for second eye pupil.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, your pupil will be 2 sc and ch 1 before making a sl st to bridge gap when pulling circle closed.

Eye Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in to the circle in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc before pulling circle closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 st total)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye whites directly on to the beanie during hat assembly.
Repeat process for second eye.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will work the st in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc. Sl st closed. (9 st total)

Ear Front (Make 2): using main color lighter blue yarn
Row 1: Ch 7. Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 4 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 2: Make 2 dc in 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the next 3 st and 2 dc in last st. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 3-6: Place 1 dc in 1st st in row and in each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 7: Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)
Row 8: Place 1 dc in 2nd st in row leaving 1st st unworked and 1 dc in each of following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn.(5 dc)
Row 9: Work 1 dc in each st in row across. (5 dc) Fasten off.
Repeat process for second puppy ear.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color lighter blue yarn
Repeat instructions for Rows 1-9 of the Ear Fronts but do not fasten off at the end of Row 9. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 10: Place a finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on, lining up the st. ( I like to use safety pins to mark the ends of mine so I don’t have to stop and keep checking to see if they line up as I can be a bit OCD about that kind of thing. 😉 but it is not a necessary step.) Now work a round of 1 sc in each st around perimeter of Blue’s ear. When you reach the bottom of ear you can make 2 sc in each of the 3 bottom st to give it a nice rounded appearance like I have in my picture. Make sure you leave a tail that is long enough to secure the ear in place on the beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn and placing to side.
Repeat process for second ear for Blue.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your nose and yarn needle to sew your nose in place on beanie hat. You can reference my pictures on how I placed mine. Once your nose is fully secured, pull your yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Next take the tail left over from one of the spots circles and sew it in place as indicated in clipart and my own pictures. Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside before fastening off. Now repeat this process for the rest of the puppy spot circles.
Using tail on one black eye pupil and needle, sew it in place securely on top of an eye white. I centered mine on the eye white. Once secure, pull yarn to back of eye then fasten off. Repeat this process for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my Blue’s Clues hat. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off. Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next using the tail left behind on one of the Blue’s Clues ear, use your needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. (You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.) If you want longer hanging ears place lower on side of beanie. For shorter ones, place higher up on beanie hat. Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off any extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

Yoshi Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

How could I not love Yoshi from Super Mario Brothers? I think he is adorable so I thought I would try to make him into a crochet hat for my nephews to go with the Mario and Luigi beanie hats I made them previously. You can see them here.

This was a fun project to make for them and I fell in love with the hat by the time it was finished. I have a feeling I will have to make more or the three of them will fight over who can wear Yoshi.

Yoshi Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
Light Bright Green Yarn for Beanie Hat main color and nose/snout- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Black Yarn for eye pupils
White yarn for eye whites and cheek areas
Red Yarn for spikes
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends
Small amount of fiberfill stuffing for nose/snout

Pattern Instructions:

Hat Base: using light bright green yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Smile: using black yarn
Chain 16 leave tail long enough to sew on smile to nose/ snout in assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through. Set to the side until needed in finishing steps.

Nostrils (Make 2): using black yarn
Row 1: Ch 4. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and following 2 st. Sl st back in to last ch worked. (3 sc)
Leave a short tail to sew nostril in place on nose/snout during assembly. Cut yarn and pull through before putting to side until needed.
Repeat process for second nostril.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order in to circle: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 st total)
Leave a long enough tail in order to sew on to the Eye whites area before cutting yarn. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed in finishing off steps.
Repeat for second eye pupil.

Eye Whites: using white yarn
Row 1: Ch 14, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and each of the following ch until end is reached. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2: Place 2 dc in first st, 1 dc in next 10 st, and 2 dc in last st. Ch 2 and turn. (14 dc)
Row 3: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each of the st across. Ch 2 and turn. (14 dc)
Row 4: Sc in 2nd st skipping 1st st in row, *1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in following st, 1 hdc in next, 1 sc in next*, sl st in following 2 st, sc in next *repeat from * to * Sl st in to last st in row. Now continue working row of sl st, 1 in each st, around back to beginning st in round. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round.
Remember to leave a yarn tail that will be long enough to securely sew your eyes in place on to your Yoshi hat before cutting yarn. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed for eye assembly.

White Cheek Areas (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in circle. Pull circle closed tightly before connecting with a sl st to the top of the 1st st in this round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in the following 6 st. Work 1 sl st in each of the following 3 st and sl st in to the top side of the 1st st in round. (14 dc)
Leave yarn tail long enough to sew cheek area in place on your beanie hat.
Repeat for second cheek area.

Nose / Snout Backing: using green yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in circle. Pull circle closed tightly before connecting with a sl st to the top of the 1st st in this round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 11 st. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before working *2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in next st* repeat until end of round. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (36 dc)
Make sure you leave a long enough of a yarn tail in order to sew nose back on to the snout/ nose and then sew the assembled snout/ nose on to your beanie hat during assembly. Put to the side until needed in finishing off stage.

Nose / Snout Front: using green yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in circle. Pull circle closed tightly before connecting with a sl st to the top of the 1st st in this round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 11 st. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before working *2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in next st* repeat until end of round. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 2 before placing 1 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 35 st. Sl st to top of 1st st in round. (36 dc)
Round 5: Ch 1 before working 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 35 st. Sl st to the top of 1st st in round. (36 sc)
Fasten off

Yoshi Spikes (Make 2): using red yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before making 8 dc into circle. Sl st to top of first st in round. (8 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2. Place 3 dc in first st, 1 dc in each of the next 3 st, 3 dc in next st and 1 dc in last st. Sl st to top of first st in round. (12 dc)
Round 4: Sl st in first two st. Fold your spike in half so that you are now working in a corner. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc through both st lined up in fold and in each to the end. (6 sc)
Make sure you leave a long enough tail to secure your spike to the crocheted hat when finished!
Leave an extra long tail in order to sew this on very securely so they don’t flop around.

Finishing off:

Nose assembly:
Using your tail left on one of the nostrils and your yarn needle, sew nostril in place on front of the Nose/ Snout front piece. Once secure, pull yarn to inside of snout piece and fasten off. Repeat process with second nostril. Next use the tail left for your smile chain and needle to sew the smile in place on Nose/Snout front piece in desired location. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed my own. Once you have it fully sewn in place, pull yarn to inside and fasten off. Now you are going to attach the nose back to nose/snout front piece by lining the nose back up to the opening on the back of the nose / snout. You want to stop about 2/3 of the way around to stuff with your fiberfill stuffing as you sew it around. Once you have it assembled, use leftover tail from assembled nose/snout to sew in place on front of your beanie hat. Once it is secured, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie and fasten off.

Next you want to use the tail left on on of the white cheek areas and yarn needle to sew white cheek areas in place on each side of attached snout lining up white white contrast trim. Once in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and finish off.

Eye assembly:
Taking tail on one of the eye pupils, sew pupil directly on to eye white area in desired location. Once the pupil is attached, pull yarn to back of eye before fastening off. Repeat for second pupil.
Now you take the assembled eyes and place them just above the nose/snout.You can see my pictures to see how I placed mine. I put mine right against the top of the nose/snout. You will use the white yarn tail left on eye whites with your yarn needle to sew them in to place. Once your eyes are secure, pull yarn to inside of the Yoshi hat and fasten off.

The last step is to attach Yoshi’s red spikes to center of back of the head near the bottom (see pictures for placement of mine) to represent the spikes that run down his back. To attach them, take your yarn needle and using a tail left on one of the spikes, sew it into desired place. Once you have it sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of hat before fastening off. Repeat this process for the second spike.
Now take a look over your assembled hat, checking for any loose ends or tails you did not fasten off yet. If you find any go ahead do so now. All done!

Chococat the Black Cat Character Hat Crochet Pattern

I made up this crochet pattern for my future stepdaughter. This is Chococat from Hello Kitty’s world, Sanrio. I think this kitty translated pretty well to crochet. I almost didn’t want to let this black cat hat go.. My friends all raved over how it turned out and I’ve had several requests to make additional copies for them so I will take that as a good sign.

It’s a fun but quick crochet project that can be done in one afternoon. Learn more about the character Chococat here.

Chococat the Black Cat Character Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Once you have completed the easy peasy crochet beanie hat in pattern, sl st red yarn to where you left off on beanie base. This will represent Chococat in the red collar like in picture above. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st. Fasten off.

Eyes Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in to the circle. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in each st around before sl st in the top of 1st st in round. (24 dc)
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the eyes on to your Chococat hat during assembly before pulling yarn through and putting to side until needing in finishing off stage.
Repeat for second eye white. Place to the side until needed for assembly.
*For 6 months to 12 months sizes, start with 10 hdc and work both rounds with hdc instead of dc.
*For newborn to 6 month sizes, start with 8 hdc and work both rounds with hdc instead of dc.

Eye Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc in to the m.c. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (8 sc)
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew each of the pupils on to the eye whites during assembly before pulling yarn through and putting to side until needing in finishing off stage.
*For 6 months to 12 months sizes, start with 6 sc instead of 8.
*For newborn to 6 months sizes, start with 4 sc instead of 8.

Nose: using orange yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in to circle in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc before sl st in to the top of 1st st in round.
Leave a long enough tail at end before cutting yarn in order to sew it in place on your hat during assembly process in finishing stage.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, put the st in magic circle in the following order: 1 sc, 3 hdc, 2 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc.

Ear Front (Make 2): using yellow yarn
Row 1: Ch 7, dc in 3rd ch from hook and place 1 dc in each of the following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 2: Place 1 dc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked, place 1 dc in following 2 st across, and dctog last two st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 dc)
Row 3: Place 1 dc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked, place 1 dc in following st, and dctog last two st. Ch 2 and turn. (3 dc)
Row 4: Place 1 dc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked and dctog last two st. Ch 2 and turn. (2 dc)
Row 5: Place 1 dc in second st, skipping first st. Sl st into last st. ( 1 dc)
Fasten off and put down until ready to attach to ear back.
*For 6 months to 12 months sizes, start with a ch of 6 and first row of 4 dc, skipping Row 1.
*For newborn to 6 month sizes, start of with ch of 5 and first row of 3 dc, skipping Row 1 and 2.

Ear Back (Make 2): using black main color yarn
Repeat Rounds 1-5 from Ear Front step above but do leave a long enough tail of yarn at the beginning of your project to be able to sew your ears once assembled on to the beanie hat. After completing Round 5 on the ear backs do not fasten off like you did on ear fronts.
Place one completed Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on, lining up the st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc through 1 st on both pieces at once. You will make a complete round of 1 sc in each with exception of 3 sc in each corner of your triangle ears to give it a more rounded appearance.
Fasten off. You should still have the tail from the beginning of the Ear Back steps above, do not fasten this off as you will need it to secure your ears on to the Chococat beanie during assembly.
Repeat process for second ear.
*For 6 months to 12 months sizes, start with a ch of 6 and first row of 4 dc, skipping Row 1.
*For newborn to 6 month sizes, start of with ch of 5 and first row of 3 dc, skipping Row 1 and 2.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your completed orange nose and yarn needle to sew it in desired location on the beanie hat. Once the nose is secured in place, pull yarn in to the inside of hat before finishing off.
Now taking the tail from one of your eye pupils and using your yarn needle, sew them in place on a finished eye white. Pull yarn to the back side of eye white when finished sewing before fastening off end. Repeat this process for the second eye.
Next you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew the eye in to the proper place on your beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my own Chococat hat. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off. Repeat this process for the second eye.
Using the tail left behind on one of the cat ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location near top of beanie hat. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own. Once you have secured it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

Chibi Baby Girl Panda Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

I fell in love with this sweet baby girl panda hat as I crocheted the pieces and assembled it. I think it is just downright adorable but I could be a bit biased on that. 😉 What is more cute than a panda? A baby panda! My soon to be stepdaughter adores pandas so I’m sure she will try to steal this one but it will be hard to let it go. Maybe I will make up a second one for myself once I finish all my works in progress.

Chibi Baby Girl Panda Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
White Yarn for Beanie Hat main color (or desired color)- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Black Yarn for features and ears
Pink Yarn for blush circles and bow
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Instructions:

Hat Base: in main color white yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your chibi baby girl panda bear hat!

Eye Whites (Make 2): using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull circle closed tight. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (10 dc)
You will want to leave a yarn tail long enough to secure your eye white to the black eye area pieces during assembly securely. Pull yarn and put to side until needed in finishing stage.
Repeat instructions for second eye.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 8 hdc instead of 10 dc.

Eyes Pupils (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 4 sc in to the circle. Pull circle closed tight. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (4 sc)
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the eyes pupils on to your eye whites during assembly. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed in later steps.
Repeat process for second eye.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 3 sc or a chain of 4 with sl st to last ch from hook to make a small circle.

Black Eye Area Base (Make 2): Using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 4 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, and 1 sc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (14 st total)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 1 dc in 1st 3 st, 2 dc in next 3 st, 1 dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next 3 st, 1 dc in last st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 st total)
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the black eye area on to your panda hat during assembly /finishing off stage.
Repeat for second eye area. Place to the side until needed for during assembly.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, in Round 2 replace all dc stitches with hdc.

Ear Front (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle ch 2 before placing 10 dc in circle. Pull circle closed in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the next 9 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Fasten off and repeat instructions for second ear.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, replace all dc stitches in ears with hdc instead.

Ear Back (Make 2): using black yarn
Repeat Rounds 1-2 from Ear Front step above but do not fasten off at end of Round 3.
Round 3: Place one finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on before ch 1, then work a round of *2 sc in first st and 1 sc in next 2 st* repeating around the perimeter through both pieces until you have 4 st left. Place 1 sl st in each of the last 4 st before sl st in to top of 1st st in round. The 4 sl st will be the bottom of your ear that you will sew on to your baby girl panda hat.
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the panda ears on to top of your chibi baby girl panda hat during assembly.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, replace all dc stitches in ears with hdc.

Nose: using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, and 1 sc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight oval. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (10 st total)
Leave long enough tail to sew it securely on to beanie hat during assembly plus freehand stitch your mouth / smile in place on the hat before cutting yarn and pulling through.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, place the following in this order in to your circle: 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 1 sc then pulling nose closed before making a sl st in top of 1st in round.

Bow: using pink yarn
Center Bow Circle: using pink yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle ch 2 before placing 8 hdc in circle. Pull circle closed in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (8 hdc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 hdc in 1st st and each of the next 7 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (16 hdc)
Leave a long enough tail to sew your bow circle on top of the bow base and then secure the assembled bow in place on top of panda hat. Cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until ready to assemble.s
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, in Round 1 make 6 hdc instead of 8 hdc and replace all the hdc stitches in Round 2 with sc.

Bow Base: using pink yarn
Row 1: Ch 7 before placing 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 hdc in each of the following 4 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 hdc)
Row 2: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st in round, leaving 1st st unworked, place 1 hdc in next 3 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 3:  Place 1 hdc in 2nd st in round, leaving 1st st unworked, place 1 hdc in next 2 st. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 4-7:  Work 1 hdc in each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 8:  Work 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the next 2 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 9:  Work 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the next 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (5 hdc)
Row 10: Sl st around whole perimeter of bow base placing 1 sl st in each st and 2 sl st in each corner to give a more polished look to the bow. Sl st in top of 1st st in round.
Fasten off and place to side until ready to assemble bow in finishing off steps.
*For newborn to 12 month sizes, replace all hdc stitches with sc and all ch 2 into ch 1.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your nose and yarn needle to sew your nose in place on beanie hat. Use extra tail length to freehand stitch on a mouth one nose is secure. You can reference my pictures on how I placed mine. Once mouth is complete, pull your yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Next take the tail left over from one of the blush circles and sew it in place on either side of the mouth near bottom of panda hat. Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside before fastening off. Now repeat this process for the second blush circle.
Using tail on one eye pupil, sew it in place securely on top of an eye white. I centered mine on the eye white. Once secure, pull yarn to back of eye then fasten off. Repeat this process for second eye.
Once you have the previous step done for the eye whites and pupil, you are ready to attach the eyes on to the black eye area ovals. Use the white yarn tail left from the eye white and yarn needle to sew them on to the black eye area. You can see my pictures to see how I placed mine but feel free to mix it up. Repeat this process for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye (which should be long black yarn tail from your black eye area) and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my chibi panda hat. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off. Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next using the tail left behind on one of the panda ears, use your needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. (You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.) Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off any extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Taking the long tail from your bow circle, sew it in place on center of your bow base. You will then use extra length to sew your assembled bow directly on to your beanie hat. Once secure pull your yarn to inside of hat before fastening off.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

I absolutely adore this chibi panda hat I made up one afternoon. Normally I make hats with a certain person or requested character. This one just came to me while working on another hat and I had to make it. Just like many of my projects I fell in love with it during assembly process. <3 Happy crafting!

Minnie Mouse Oversized Ears and Bow Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

This was a cute hat project that works up pretty quickly. After posting a picture of this hat on my personal Facebook account, I got more than 10 requests from family and friends wanting Mickey or Minnie hats within a few hours. Oopsie.

I love that the ears are extra big on the hats versus smaller ears I have seen on other hats and her big floppy bow. The red trim at the bottom is optional but I like it as it represents the red in her clothing and compliments her pretty bow.

Minnie Mouse Oversized Ears and Bow Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
Black Yarn for Beanie Hat main color (or desired color) and ears- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Red Yarn for contrast trim (optional) and Minnie’s bow
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)

Hat Base: in main color black yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

One completed sl st red yarn (optional contrast trim) to where you left off on beanie base. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st. Fasten off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Minnie the Mouse ear hat!

*Note: If you are going to do this in toddler size beanie, make the 3rd round in mouse ears sc instead of dc. If you are going to do this in 6 months to 12 months, make both 2nd and 3rd round sc instead of dc. If you are doing newborn to 6 months make all the mouse ear rounds in sc.

Minnie’s Oversized Bow: using red yarn
Round 1: Ch 41 before placing 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each of the following 39 st across until end of chain. Ch 2 and turn. (40 sc)
Rounds 2-4: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each of the 39 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (40 dc)
Round 5: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each of the following st across. Ch 1 and turn. (40 dc)
Round 6: Place 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following st across. ( 40 sc)
Now turn your bow so you can use a simple sc across to attach the two ends of the both by doing 1 sc through matching st put together. Your bow piece should be a circular piece. Fasten off. Place your bow flat with the seam in the center bottom, seam on the inside of bow. Put to side until ready to assemble in finishing off step.

*Note: If you are going to do this in toddler size, reduce starting chain of bow to 31 instead of 41. if you are making this in 6 months to 12 months, start the chain off at 26 instead of 41. If you are doing this in newborn to 6 month size, start the chain off at 21 instead of 41. You can also choose to switch to “h” hook instead of “j” hook as pattern calls for to scale down size of ears and bow.

Center Bow Strap: using red yarn
Round 1: Ch 13 before placing 1 sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each of the following 11 ch across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 sc)
Round 2: Place 1 dc in first st and each of the following across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Round 3: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each of the next st across. Ch 1 and turn. (12 dc)
Round 4: Place 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following st. (12 sc)
Wrap strap around center of bow. You can pull it tighter or use a smaller strap if you want a much smaller middle versus the outside of the bow.
Round 5: Holding ends of strap together in back of bow, ch 1 before working 1 sc in each st through both ends at same time. I then turn the seam in to inside of the bow.
Cut yarn leaving a long enough tail to sew on to the bow and then bow on to the beanie during finishing off process.

Ear Front (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in circle. Pull circle closed in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and next 11 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (24 dc)
Round 3: Place *2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next*. Repeat this pattern *around until end of round. (36 dc)
Fasten off.

Ear Back (Make 2): using black yarn
Repeat Rounds 1-3 from Ear Front step above but do not fasten off at end of Round 3.
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the perimeter of the mouse ears together and then on to the top of your Mickey hat.

Finishing off:
Using the tail left behind on one of the mouse ear backs, use your yarn needle to sew an ear back to an ear front. A basic in and out stitch is what I use but feel free to do whatever makes you most comfortable. Once you have Minnie’s ear assembled, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location on hat. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own. Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Next use the tail you left on the center bow strap to secure Minnie’s red bow to the top of your hat. I’m always paranoid of things following off so I stitch all the way through to the top and bow and back. Plus I use a lot of double knots. 😉
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

This crochet pattern was inspired by this cute picture of Cinnamoroll the Puppy with the contrast cinnamon colored lines. Even though he is an all white puppy I wanted to see how he would turn out with a bit of cinnamon. So thus this hat was created. He is a Hello Kitty world friend and adorable of course. I think he translated pretty well to crochet. Now I have to make an all white true version of him soon!

Cinnamoroll “Cinnamon” the Puppy Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

One completed sl st brown “cinnamon” yarn to where you left off on beanie base. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st. Fasten off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Cinnamoroll the Puppy inspired anime hat with a touch of cinnamon!

*Note: If you are going to do this in newborn / infant/ up to 1 year old sizes, switch to a G hook for the features instead of the J to scale them down in size or eliminate one increase row from each feature worked in the round

Eyes (Make 2): using bright or light blue yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, and 1 sc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 st total)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in first 2 st, 2 sc in next 3 st, 1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next 3 st and 1 sc in last st before sl st to the top of 1st st in round.
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the eyes on to your Cinnamoroll hat during assembly before pulling yarn through and putting to side.
Repeat for second eye. Place to the side until needed for assembly.

Blush Circles (Make 2): using pink colored yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, and 1 sc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 st total)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 1 dc in first 2 st, 2 dc in next 3 st, 1 dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next 3 st and 1 dc in last st before sl st to the top of 1st st in round.
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the blush circle on to your Cinnamoroll hat during assembly before pulling yarn through and put to side until needed. Repeat this process for second eye.

Ear Front (Make 2): using white main color yarn
Round 1: Ch 8, dc in 3rd ch from hook and place 1 dc in each of the following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)
Round 2-3: Place 1 dc in first st and each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)
Round 4-7: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in rest of st across. Ch 2 and turn. ( 7-8-9-10 dc)
Round 8-13: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (10 dc)
Round 14-15: Place 1 dc in second st, skipping first st, 1 dc in following st until you have 2 st left at end, dctog last two st. Ch 2 and turn. ( 8 – 6 dc)
Round 16: Place 1 sc in second st, skipping 1st, 1 hdc in next, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in last st. Sl st into same st.
Fasten off and put down until ready to attach to ear back.

Ear Back (Make 2): using white main color yarn
Repeat Rounds 1-16 from Ear Front step above but do leave a long enough tail of yarn at the beginning of your project to be able to sew your ears once assembled on to the beanie hat. After completing Round 16 fasten off.

Ear Liner: using one ear front, one ear back and cinnamon brown yarn
Round 17: Place one finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on. Attach your “cinnamon” yarn to a st at one of the top corners of ears with a sl st before ch 1, then work a round of 1 sc around the perimeter through both pieces until you reach the other top corner.
Fasten off once one round is completed and sl st to beginning st.

Mouth: using pink yarn
Round 1: Ch 7 before placing 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in the following 4 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Round 2: Place 1 dc in 1st st and following 4 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Round 3: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 dc in next st, 1 hdc in following st and sl st in to the last st in row.
Once completed pull yarn through and fasten off.

Mouth Liner: using cinnamon brown contrast yarn
Attach “cinnamon” colored yarn to the mouth with a sl st in a st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st but place 3 sc in the top two corners of mouth and in bottom dc st in curve to give it a more rounded appearance if desired.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your mouth and yarn needle to sew your mouth on the beanie hat. Once your mouth piece is secured, pull yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Taking the tail from one of your blush circles and yarn needle, sew them in place in desired location on face. Pull yarn to the inside of your hat when finished sewing before fastening off end. Repeat this process for the second blush circle.
Next you want to use the tail from one eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my own Cinnamoroll hat. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off. Repeat this process for the second eye.
Using the tail left behind on one of the floppy puppy ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own. If you want longer hanging ears place it lower on the hat or higher placement for shorter length of ears hanging down. Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

Pankun the Panda Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

My future stepdaughter is obsessed with panda bears so when I came across an image of this anime style orphaned panda from Hello Kitty’s friends I had to make her one. Pankun the Panda Character Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
White Yarn for Beanie Hat main color (or desired color)- (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Black Yarn for features and trim
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

Hat Base: in main color white yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
One completed sl st black yarn to where you left off on beanie base. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st. Fasten off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Pankun the panda bear inspired anime hat!

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, and 1 sc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 st total)
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the eyes on to your Pankun hat during assembly.
Repeat for second eye. Place to the side until needed for assembly.

Ear Front (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle ch 3 before placing 12 dc in circle. Pull circle closed in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and next 9 st. Ch 1 and turn leaving last 2 st unworked. (20 dc)
Round 3: Place 2 sc in first st, 1 sc in next. Repeat this pattern around until bottom corner again leaving 2 unworked st not worked. This will give it a good surface to attach to the beanie when putting together hat. Fasten off.

Ear Back (Make 2): using black yarn
Repeat Rounds 1-3 from Ear Front step above but do not fasten off at end of Round 3.
Round 8: Place one finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on before ch 1, then work a round of *2 sc in first st and 1 sc in next 2 st* repeating around the perimeter through both pieces.
Cut your yarn making sure you leave a tail long enough to sew the panda ears on to top of your Pankun hat during assembly.

Mouth: using black yarn
Ch 20. Leave long enough tail to sew it securely on to beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail left on your mouth chain and yarn needle to sew your mouth on in a “w” shape. Once secured, pull yarn to inside of hat before finishing off.
Next you want to use the tail from one eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my Pankun hat. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off. Repeat this process for eye number
Using the tail left behind on one of the panda ears, use your needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own. Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length. Repeat this process for the second ear.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

This was a fun and quick hat project that I’m sure my stepdaughter will love. It will make a great gift for Hello Kitty fans, those who love panda bears or for sweet crocheted baby hats. <3 Happy crafting!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Greg Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern

This hat project was a special request to make for the auction at my Mother’s school to help raise funds. I wasn’t sure how I could translate an all white and black sketched character but eventually it came to me. Greg is such a cute character from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. If you have a Wimpy Kid fan in your life, this makes a perfectly fun gift. I’ve even had adults wanting to don a Greg hat. He has been a big hit with both the teachers and the students at the school so far.

I can’t wait to try this procedure on some more comic cartoon characters I might not have attempted it on before. I’m still new at pattern writing so if you have any questions, please let me know so I can sort it out. Happy crafting!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s Greg Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:

“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends
Small amount of fiberfill stuffing for nose *optional*

Pattern Instructions:

Hat Base: in main color yarn (white)
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice in white yarn. Fasten off.
Attach black yarn to where you left off at end of beanie base with a sl st in one st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in the first st and each st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. Fasten off. Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your own Diary of a Wimpy Kid hat of Greg!

Eyes (Make 2): Using black contrast yarn
Round 1: In magic circle ch 1 before placing the following st in to the circle as follows: 2 sc, 1 hdc,1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc and 1 sc. Pull circle closed. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round. (12 st total)
Before you cut your yarn make sure you leave a tail long enough sew your eyes on to your beanie hat securely. Cut yarn and pull through tightly before placing to side until needed during assembly process.
Repeat process for second eye.

Smile: Using black contrast yarn
Make 1 chain of 18 ch and leave tail to sew this main part of the smile in to place when assembling beanie hat.
Make 1 chain of 5 ch and leave tail of yarn to sew the sides of the smile in to place on each end of the smile chain from previous step. Put to side until needed during assembly.

Nose Pieces (make 2): using white main color yarn
Row 1: Ch 7. Place 1 dc in third ch from hook and following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 2: Place 1 dc in first st and following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 3: Place 1 dc in first st and following 4 st. Ch 1 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 4: Sc in first st, hdc in next st, dc in third st, hdc in next st, and sc in last st. Cut yarn, pull through and fasten off.(5 st total)
Repeat this process for the second Nose Piece but before you start your original chain on Nose piece 2 make sure you leave a tail long enough sew your nose in place on to your beanie hat once completed. Fasten off at end of Round 4.

Nose Contrast Outline: using black contrast yarn
Round 1: Attach black yarn to one bottom corner of nose with a sl st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in each st up to top 5 st of nose tip curve. Place 2 sc in each of these 5 st before proceeding down other side of nose to corner with 1 sc in each st again. When you reach bottom corner, cut yarn and fasten off. You should have the 5 st at the base of the nose unworked with black like as seen in my pictures.

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using main color white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc. Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and in each of the following 8 st. Place 1 sc in each of the last three st. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (21 st total)
Cut yarn and fasten off. You will need this during Ear Back assembly so don’t put it too far away.
Repeat process for second ear.

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color white yarn and black contrast yarn for last round
Repeat rounds 1-2 of Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at end of round 2. You want to leave a long enough tail at start of Round 1 so that you can sew the ears on to place on hat during assembly process.
Placing one ear front in front of your ear back you are working on, continue working the following through both pieces at same time.
Round 3: Attach black contrast yarn with a sl st in last st worked. Ch 1 before working 1 sc in first 6 st, then alternate 1 sc then 2 sc repeatedly until back at first st in round. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.
Now repeat process for second ear.

Three Hairs on top of Head: using black contrast yarn
Round 1: Ch 9. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 7 st and sl st back in the last ch.
Round 2: Ch 13. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 11 st. Sl st back in the last ch.
Round 3: Ch 9. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 hdc in next 7 st. Sl st back in the last ch. Ch 1 and turn.
Round 4: Sl st around outside perimeter of three hairs and base. You will place 1 sl st in each st but 3 sl st in ends of hair to give more of a rounded appearance to the hairs. After completely going around sl st back into 1st st from round.
Leave a long enough tail to sew your hair in place on top of your beanie during assembly. Cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until this is needed during finishing off steps below.

Finishing off:
Since I like to start adding my features from the bottom up we will start with Diary of a Wimpy Kid Greg’s smile. I find that by working from bottom up you get a better idea of how much space you have during the process. Otherwise you may find yourself scrunching up features at the bottom if you haven’t left enough space in your process. By working upwards you always have extra room as you can just move the next feature up a little higher if need be.
You are now going to use this the tail left on the large smile chain from before and your yarn needle to sew the main smile piece into the desired place on the hat. (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed his smile my own hat.) Once you have secured it into place, bring the yarn into the inside of the beanie hat and finish off.
Now repeat this process to the smaller side smile chain on the right side to give his lopsided signature smile.
Next we will work on attaching the nose that was assembled previously. Use the tail left behind and needle to secure the nose piece in place on to the beanie hat. I lightly stuffed mine to give it more a 3D appearance but it is not necessary. Pull yarn in to the inside of beanie once sewn on and fasten off.
Next we will work on the his eyes. Take the yarn tail left from one eye and sew it into place on to the hat. Note that you want the oval of eyes to have the narrow sides on top and bottom whereas the long ends facing sides. Once it’s sewn on, pull yarn in to the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat for second eye.
Now you need to attach Greg’s ears on to the beanie. Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from when you crocheted the ears before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position. Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off. Repeat process for second ear.
Picking up Greg’s hair pieces you created before, use the tails and yarn needle to secure them in to place on the top of the beanie hat. I tend to center mine on the 1st Round circle on my own beanie hat but you can place it in your desired location to best fit your hat. Once the hair has been securely sewn on, pull yarn into the inside of the hat before finishing off.
Note: My pattern is for floppy pieces of hair. If you want them to stay upright and stiff, try adding a black pipe cleaner in the last round around the perimeter of the hair. It’s a lightweight and washable solution.
