Who is Green Lantern? Green Lantern is a superhero from DC Universe comics.  He is a comic fan favorite and his logo makes a fast, easy but fun project to add to a hat.  I made this one up for my superhero loving nephews.

I’m working on creating a whole set for them so I will be sure to continue sharing it with you all along the way. :) Learn more about Green Lantern here.

Project requires:

Green Yarn for Beanie Hat (main color)-  (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
White Yarn for white logo circle
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
hdc – half double crochet (US)

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Hat Base:

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start customizing your own Green Lantern Superhero hat for the superhero fan in your life. :)

White Logo Circle: using white yarn
Round 1:  Starting off with your white yarn in a magic circle, ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout pattern) before placing 12 dc in a magic circle. Pull circle tight before sl st in top of beginning st.  (12 dc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and 2 dc in the next 11 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing  *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st * repeat * around. Sl st in top of 1st st in beginning of round. (36 dc)
Round 4: Ch 2 before placing  *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next 2 st * repeat * around. Sl st in top of 1st st in beginning of round. (48 dc)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail in order to sew your eye on to the beanie during assembly process. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed.
*For sizes 6 to 12 months, leave off Round 4.
*For sizes newborn to 6 months, leave off Round 3 and 4.

Green Lantern Logo: using Green yarn
This part of the Logo I made into three simple pieces and just sewed them in place on the logo circle before attaching to hat.

For Circle part of Logo: using Green yarn
Round 1: Starting with beginning chain that will be formed into an open circle, ch 12, then sl st in to the last ch from the hook making sure it is not twisted. You should now have your open circle base.
Round 2:  Ch 12 before placing 16 hdc in to the formed circle. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (16 hdc)
Leave  a tail long enough to secure the assembled logo to the beanie hat during assembly process.
*For sizes 6 to 12 months, starting ch with 8 instead of 12 before placing 12 hdc.
*For sizes newborn to 6 months, starting ch of 8 instead of 12 before placing 12 sc instead of hdc.

For Top and Bottom Stripes of Logo (make 2):  using Green yarn
Row 1: Ch 10 before placing 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 hdc in next 7 ch.  Sl st in to side of last hdc.
Leave tail long enough to sew stripe in place on the logo circle during assembly before cutting yarn.
Repeat process for 1st stripe for second stripe.
*For sizes 6 months to 12 mos, start with a chain of 8 instead of 10.
*For sizes newborn to 6 months, start with chain of 8 instead of 10 and switch to sc instead of hdc as used in other sizes.

Finishing off:
Before attaching anything to the hat directly we are going to put together the logo in one piece so that when we fasten off any undesirable ends are hidden between logo circle and beanie. :)
Taking the tail left on the green circle part of logo, center it on your white logo circle then use your yarn needle to secure it in place.  Once secure pull the yarn through to the back before fastening off.
Next take the tail from one of the green logo stripes and use your yarn needle to sew it in place. One should be on the top and the other on the bottom in parallel lines to each other as seen in logo picture and my hat pictures.  As before, once secure, pull yarn to back and fasten off.  Repeat this process for the second stripe.  Once fastened off you should only have one yarn tail left on your assembled logo, a long white one.
Using the tail left on the assembled logo from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired place on the front of the hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.)
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. Then you are all done.
