This set of crochet character hats were inspired by the adorable Ilo and Milo from ilomilo video game.  I couldn’t resist making them in to these hats for my nephews to wear.  I can’t wait to see them wear them. :)

If you or someone you know is a gaming geek or just a fan of ilomilo, this is a fun but quick project you can make up.  The antennae are super easy as they are just a few rows of sc sewn shut around a pipe cleaner so the pipe cleaner does all the shaping work.

I would love to see your versions if you decide to make them so please send them my way or add it to the Ravelry project page. Happy crafting!

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:

Row 2-4: Place 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)

Eyes (Make 2 per hat): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to secure on to face area during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until steps require it later.
Repeat process for second eye.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1  before placing 5 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (5 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 3 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (3 sc)

Curled Antennae for top of head: using black yarn and pipe cleaners (optional)
Row 1: Ch 21. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 19 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long tail. You are going to use this tail to stitch the antenna into a circular tube which will just be wide enough for a pipe cleaner or two to slip inside to help you hold your form.
You may choose to not use a pipe cleaner and add a little coated wire or stuffing. One way to get the curve of the antenna without using pipe cleaner or wire is to skip a st inbetween sewing together the area you want to curve and pull yarn tight before going to next one. :)

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 17. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 15 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. (16 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 13. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 11 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. (12 sc)

Finishing off:
Taking the tail on one eye and your yarn needle sew the first eye to bottom right of face area. You can see my pictures on where I placed them on my hats.  Once attached, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Taking the tail on the second eye and your yarn needle attach it to the bottom left of face area. Again once attached in place, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Now using the leftover yarn tail on the face area and yarn needle secure the face area directly on to the front of the beanie hat in desired location.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat before fastening off.
Using tail on your antenna and your needle, stitch your antennae closed at end you are starting with that has tail at before stitching down your piece forming it in a circular tube around the pipe cleaner (again this is optional but I do recommend it as it helps keep it in an upright curved position). I just did a simple back and forth stitch as my sewing skills are less than stellar. Once you have the tube closed and reached the bottom end, move on to next step.
Using tail left on your antenna from previous step and needle, secure it in place on the top of your beanie hat. Once you have it sewn in your desired place, I centered mine on the first round on hat base, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now just check for any loose ends or tails you may have missed during assembly and if you find any, do so now.
All done!
