Who is the Flash? If you are a superhero fan or you have a superhero fan in your life, you have more than likely heard of the Flash.  :) He is a likable hero from DC Comics.  You can learn more about the Flash here.

This was another fun hat I made up for my nephews.  It’s a short and fun project that you can whip up in no time.  I have three young nephews who all love superheroes it’s a safe bet they will love it as well.

Red Yarn for Beanie Hat (main color)-  (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)

Yellow / Gold yarn for Thunderbolt/lightning
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
hdc – half double crochet (US)

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe
The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Hat Base: using red yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the red hat base you are ready to start customizing your own Flash Superhero logo hat for the superhero fan in your life. :)

White Logo Circle: using white yarn
Round 1:  Ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout pattern) before placing 10 dc in a magic circle. Pull circle tight before sl st in top of beginning st.  (10 dc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and 3 dc in the next 9 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st, *1 dc in next st, 2 dc in following st* repeat * all around. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (30 dc)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail in order to sew your eye on to the beanie during assembly process. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed.
This size of logo circle will work for toddler to adult male size hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, switch all dc in white logo circle to hdc instead.

Lightning / Thunderbolt: using yellow / gold yarn
Row 1: Ch 5. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 3 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 2:  1 sc in 1st st and following 3 st across. Ch 3 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 3: Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next 2 st. Ch 1 and turn leaving last 2 st unworked. Ch 1 and turn. ( 4 sc)
Row 4:  1 sc in 1st st and following 3 st across. Ch 3 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 5:  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next 2 st. Ch 1 and turn leaving last 2 st unworked. Ch 1 and turn. ( 4 sc)
Row 6:  1 sc in 1st st and following 3 st across. Ch 3 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 7:  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in next ch, 1 sc in next 2 st. Ch 1 and turn leaving last 2 st unworked. Ch 1 and turn. ( 4 sc)
Round 8: Place 1 sc in each st across. ( 4 sc)
Make sure you leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the lightning / thunderbolt securely in place during logo assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through.
*This size lightning / thunderbolt will work from sizes toddler to adult male. For newborn to 12 month sizes, start with a ch of 4 instead of 5, working 3 sc in each row instead of 4 sc plus eliminate Rows 6 and 7.

Finishing off:
Before attaching anything to the hat directly we are going to put together the logo in one piece so that when we fasten off any undesirable ends are hidden between logo circle and beanie. :)
Taking the tail left on the thunderbolt center it on your white logo circle then use your yarn needle to secure it in place.  Once secure pull the yarn through to the back before fastening off.  (You can reference the logo picture and pictures of my own completed hat to see where I placed mine.)
Now using the tail left on the assembled logo from step before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired location on the front of the hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.)
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. Then you are all done.
