Angry Birds’ Minion Green Pig Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern long image

Oh those wacky cute green pigs that mock me on failed levels of Angry Birds… how I love / hate thee.. I made this character hat design for a child that is a big Angry Birds fan and kind of love how it turned out. :) I will be working on making most of the game characters probably for Christmas gifts this year as it has been a big request from the kids. There is no stuffing required for this hat and it is advanced beginner friendly. I didn’t have a bright yellowish green color for the nose piece so I substituted a frosted green yarn instead (which has been driving me nuts). OCD crafting at it’s finest folks. :)

Don’t know Angry Birds? Check them out here.
Here is one of the pictures I used as inspiration for this minion pig character hat:

Angry-Birds-Green-Minion-Pig-inspiration-picture-for-crochet-character-hat-429x280

Project requires:
Medium to bright green yarn for beanie main color
(I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Light or pale green for contrast color trim and nose front (I used a muted frosted green color)
Black yarn for eye pupils and nostrils
White yarn for eye whites
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
hdc – half double crochet (US)

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe
The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project.
Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color purple yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to transform your beanie into a minion pig hat. :)

Trim: using contrast lighter green color
Attach your contrast green color to where you left off in the last round of your beanie hat with a sl st. This will be added as an additional round for the contrast trim.
Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in the round. Fasten off.

Angry Birds' Minion Green Pig Character Hat Crochet Pattern 3

Finishing off and hat assembly:
The following steps require that you have assembled all the above mentioned pieces. You should have:
1- larger eye white
1- smaller eye white
2- eye pupils
2- eyebrows
1- larger nostril
1- small nostril
1- nose / snout piece
2- assembled ears
Taking the tail from the larger of the two eye pupils, use your yarn needle to sew this nostril in place on the left side of your nose/ snout piece. Once sewn in place, pull yarn to the backside of your nose/snout piece and fasten off. Repeat this process with the smaller of the two eye pupils placing it on the right side of the nose/ snout piece.
Now take the yarn tail left on the assembled nose / snout piece and using the  yarn needle sew this piece on the middle bottom area of your beanie hat. You can see my pictures to see how I placed it on my own hat. Once fully secure on hat, pull yarn to the inside of the hat and fasten off.
Taking a yarn tail from one eye pupil and your yarn needle sew the pupil in place on to your larger eye white. You can play around with the placement to what you like the best. I like mine to be looking in different directions but it is your own preference. Once pupil is sewn on, pull yarn to the backside of the eye white and fasten off.
Taking the white yarn tail left on your now assembled larger eye, sew it in place on the left side of your attached nose / snout on the beanie hat with the yarn needle. Once eye is secured in place, pull the yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Taking a yarn tail from one eye pupil and your yarn needle sew the pupil in place on to your smaller eye white. You can play around with the placement to what you like the best. I like mine to be looking in different directions but it is your own preference. Once pupil is sewn on, pull yarn to the backside of the eye white and fasten off.
Taking the white yarn tail left on your now assembled smaller eye, sew it in place on the right side of your attached nose / snout on the beanie hat with your yarn needle. Once eye is secured in place, pull the yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now that your eyes are attached you can place your eyebrows above each. To do so take your yarn needle and the tail from one eyebrow chain and sew it in desired location and shape over one eye. One sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off. Repeat this process for second eyebrow over the other eye.
Now take the yarn tail left on one assembled ear and using your yarn needle sew the ear in place with the black ear front facing forward on the beanie on the left side of the hat. On features like this I like to run a second row of double knots or stitches on the inside of the beanie hat to secure them in place but it isn’t necessary. Once fully secure on top of the beanie hat, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. For second ear, you want to place this ear just to the right of the center of your hat instead of in a mirror image placement like most hats with ears to make this character hat. Attach with the same instructions as first ear.
Now take the time to double check over your finished hat for any tails or loose ends you might of missed in process just in case. If you find any, fasten them off now. All done. One super cool Angry Bird minion pig hat for the Angry Birds fan in your life.

My nephews are mildly (okay more than mildly) obsessed with all things Lego. Anything Lego is a win so for my oldest nephews birthday I decided to make him a Lego Man hat and a few other Lego inspired crochet projects as gifts.  His face when he saw the hats were priceless. I even added a new category to cRAfterChick.com so that I had a place to see all the Lego inspired projects.  You can check them all out here once they are added:  Lego Inspired.

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project. Hat Base: using gold to bright yellow yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to transform your beanie into a Lego Man hat!

Lego Topper Base (*optional*): using gold  to bright yellow main colored yarn
This feature is an optional step I highly recommend.  Why? This will keep your stuffing in the topper and prevent it from leaking  in to the hat when it stretches while being worn and extends the life of the hat. It irritates me so I prefer to use this step to make my future hat wearer more happy in the long run. :) You can skip to next section ifyou choose not to make this piece.

Lego Man Character Hat Crochet Pattern (11)

Finishing steps and assembly:
The following steps require these completed hat features:
1- finished beanie
1- topper base (optional)
1- topper piece
2- eyes
2- shining light spots
2- eyebrows
1- smile

Now that you have finished making the pieces for this hat you are ready to assemble it into your own Lego Man hat!
Starting with the topper piece and topper base to assemble (Note: if decided to skip this optional piece, skip to next step).  Line up the topper base so that it will cover the opening on your topper piece stitch to stitch.  Using the yarn tail left on your topper piece and use your yarn needle to sew them together.  You want to stop 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to lightly stuff the topper with the fiberfill (or desired stuffing of your choice) before closing it completely.  I may have added a pinch or two too much in my hat so it didn’t sit just like I wanted it to due to dome shape of beanie, so when you reach desired amount you might want to take out a little bit more just in case for a less bubbled look.
If you chose to skip the base part, just stuff topper as you sew it directly on to the hat.You want to stop 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to lightly stuff the topper with the fiberfill (or desired stuffing of your choice) before closing it completely.
Once you have done first step of topper piece, use the remaining yarn tail and the yarn needle to sew the assembled topper in the desired location on hat. I choose to center mine around the original rounds of beanie for symmetry.  When topper is secure on top of hat, pull yarn to the inside of the hat.  On features that stay upright on hats I tend to run another quick set of knots or stitches on the inside of the hat to reinforce the joining but it isn’t required. (Yes I’m paranoid of unraveling projects..)   After doing that, fasten off.
Next up, take the yarn tail left on your smile chain (or length of black yarn to stitch smile on in place for infant hats) and use the yarn needle to sew the smile in face in the bottom middle area of hat. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed it on my hat if you want some guidance on that.  When your smile is secured in place (or stitched on) bring yarn to the inside of the hat and fasten off.
Taking the tail left on one shining light spot for a eye and secure it in desired place on a Lego Man Eye. You can use use the yarn needle to do so or just secure around a stitch with a double knot or two in the back.  Repeat for the second eye.
Now that his eyes are assembled, we are ready to move on by attaching the finished eyes on to the beanie hat.  Use the black yarn tail left on one eye and the yarn needle to sew the eye in place on the front of the beanie hat above the smile. You can see where I placed my own in the pictures if you want to see how I did it.  When eye is securely in place, pull yarn to the inside of the hat and fasten off. Repeat process for second assembled eye.
The last feature to add are the eyebrows, so taking the yarn tail left on one eyebrow (or length of yarn to stitch on in infant hats) use your yarn needle to sew (or stitch on) the eyebrow in desired location over one eye.  Once eyebrow is where you desire, pull the yarn to the inside of the beanie and fasten off.  Repeat for second eyebrow.
Now take the time to look over your finished hat to make sure you didn’t miss any loose ends, yarn tails etc.  If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off now.  That’s it. All done!
I hope you enjoyed this pattern, if you have any questions please let me know. Happy crafting! :)

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peas PreTeen  / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern, which you can find  here as a foundation for the projectWant it in another size? Hat Base: in main color black or desired main color yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start transforming your beanie into a super awesome (okay maybe only I think that..) Borderlands inspired hat! :)

Hat Trim: using gold/ yellow color (contrast color 1) and red contrast color (contrast color 2) yarn
Attach red yarn (or desired contrast color 2 yarn) to last round worked in beanie where you left off with a sl st in to the st.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. Fasten off.
Now attach the gold/yellow yarn (or preferred contrast color 1 yarn) to last st worked in previous round with a sl st. Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. Fasten off.
That’s it! Now on to the applique logo.

Vault Symbol Applique Crochet Instructions:

Applique background: using gold / yellow or contrast color 1 yarn for logo background
Round 1: Using contrast color 1 yarn in a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the remaining 9 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in following st*  repeating * pattern for remaining 18 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (30 sc)
Before cutting yarn, leave a length long enough to sew this applique in place on to your hat when completed. Once you cut the yarn, pull yarn tail through last loop on hook and place to the side until needed.

The above applique instructions will work on toddler, youth, teen, women’s and men’s sized hats.  For infant sized, do the following steps  instead of those above:
Round 1: Using contrast color 1 yarn in a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 8 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 hdc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 hdc in 1st st and 2 hdc in each of the remaining 7 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (16 hdc)
Round 3:   Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in following st*  repeating * pattern for remaining 14 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (24 sc)
Before cutting yarn, leave a length long enough to sew this applique in place on to your beanie hat when completed. Once you cut the yarn, pull yarn tail through last loop on hook and place to the side until needed.

Symbol circle part: using red or contrast color 2 yarn
Make a chain of 26. Sl st in to the last ch from hook to create a circle.
Before cutting yarn, leave a length long enough to sew this portion of the vault symbol in place on the applique during assembly. Once you cut yarn, pull yarn tail through last loop on hook and place to the side until needed.

The above applique instructions will work on toddler, youth, teen, women’s and men’s sized hats.  For infant sized, do the following steps  instead of those above:
Make a chain of 16. Sl st in to the last ch from hook to create a circle.
Before cutting yarn, leave a length long enough to sew this portion of the vault symbol in place on the applique during assembly. Once you cut yarn, pull yarn tail through last loop on hook and place to the side until needed.

Symbol ^ part: using red or contrast color 2 yarn
Make a chain of 12.

Make a chain of 8.
Before cutting yarn, leave a length long enough to sew this portion of the vault symbol in place on the applique during assembly. Once you cut yarn, pull yarn tail through last loop on hook and place to the side until needed.

Applique Assembly Instructions:
The following steps require these following pieces before proceeding:
1- completed beanie hat for base
1- circle applique background
1- circle applique chain length
1-  symbol ^ applique chain length

Borderlands Video Game Vault Symbol Applique Crochet Pattern

Taking the yarn tail left on the circle part of the symbol chain, use your yarn needle to sew the circle in place on your applique background. I sewed mine right on the border of where rounds 2 and 3 meet on the background. It makes a great guide and you don’t have to worry about it being lopsided. Once it is secured in place, pull the yarn to the backside of the applique and fasten off.
Next use your yarn needle and the tail left of the symbol chain for the ^ in place on the applique background. It will be a basic upside down v shape, like this ^. You can see my pictures on how I placed mine. You want each end of the chain to touchdown on bottom of the circle. I pinned mine in place but it isn’t necessary. You should be able to eyeball how you want it placed. I just get antsy about things not being perfectly even. 😉 Once it is secured in place, pull the yarn to the backside of the applique and fasten off.
Now you have a completed vault symbol applique! There should only be on yarn tail left and that’s the extra long yarn tail in main color from the applique background. You will use this to fix the applique on to your beanie hat.

Finishing off:
All you will need to do is again use your yarn needle and the yarn tail left on the applique to secure it in place on your desired project location. I normally just attached with a basic in and out stitch near perimeter of applique so ends don’t curl up and a few stitches near the center to keep it from bubbling up. Once you have sewn your applique in place, pull the yarn to the inside of your beanie hat and fasten off.
All done!

After playing the Adventure of Tintin video game recently I was inspired to make Snowy into a character hat.  He is so cute.  I used his original drawings from the Tintin comic book illustrations to make this hat come to live versus the video game version.  I like how his features stand out more this way, especially with the eyebrows. You don’t have to be a comic or video game fan to like Snowy. He is an adorable all white terrier that is Tintin’s little sidekick on his adventures.  He makes a cute hat for children, boys or girls, adults, comic book lovers and more.  I made the hat in this pattern and as shown in pictures for one of my nephews.  I think I’m going to be making a matching Tintin hat in the near future too. :)

Don’t know about Snowy or Tintin? You can learn more about them here.

Want to check out the video game? This is the game I was talking about here. (P.S. It’s been out for awhile so it’s really cheap now!)

You can also watch episodes of his cartoon online here!

I hope you like this hat and enjoy making your own. Happy crafting!

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized(Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color white yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start creating your beanie into a Snowy hat. :)

Snout back *optional*: using white yarn
Note: This step is an optional step but one I highly recommend as it will prevent stuffing from slipping between stitches on to the wearers head when wearing hat as it stretches when worn. It can make it a bit itchy so I take this extra step to keep it where the stuffing belongs. :)
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull the circle closed.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the following 9 st.  Sl st in top of 1st st in round.  (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st* repeating * around for next 18 st around.  Sl st in top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Fasten off.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Round 1:  In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle fully closed. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 hdc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 hdc in 1st st and 2 hdc in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 hdc)
Fasten off.

Snout: using white yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in to the circle. Pull the circle closed.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and 2 dc in each of the following 9 st.  Sl st in top of 1st st in round.  (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing *2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next st* repeating * around for next 18 st around.  Sl st in top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 dc in 1st st and each of the following 29 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (30 dc)
Round 5: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in the 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 29 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st.  (30 sc)
Before you cut the yarn, make sure you leave a yarn tail long enough to be able to sew the snout on to the beanie hat *and* the snout back on the opening of the snout back area before attaching to hat if you choose that optional step.  Pull yarn through last loop on hook after cutting yarn and place to side until needed in finishing steps.

(20 hdc)
Round 3: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 19 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 hdc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st around.  Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round.  (20 sc)

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using white yarn
Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (2 dc)
Row 2: Place 2 dc in both st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (4 dc)
Row 3:  Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 3 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (5 dc)
Row 4: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 4 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (6 dc)
Row 5: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 5 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.    (7 dc)
Row 6: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in the next 6 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (8 dc)
Fasten off.
Repeat process above for the second ear front.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Row 1: Ch 3.  Place 2 hdc in 3rd ch from hook.  Ch 2 and turn. (2 hdc)
Row 2: Place 2 hdc in both st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (4 hdc)
Row 3:  Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in the next 3 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.  (5 hdc)
Row 4: Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in the next 4 st across.  Ch 2 and turn.   (6 hdc)
Fasten off.
Repeat process above for the second ear front.

Ear Back and Assembly (Make 2): using white yarn and completed ear fronts from previous steps
Repeat Rows 1-6 from Ear fronts but do not fasten off at end of Row 6 as you have with the ear fronts. Ch 1 and turn. Place one completed ear front in front of the ear back you are working on, lining up the stitches.
Row 7:  Place 1 sc in each st around and in each corner make the following: (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc). Continue process around the perimeter of both pieces until you are back to the 1st st in this row. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in row.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a tail that will be long enough to secure the ear on the top of the beanie hat during assembly. Once you cut yarn, pull through last loop on hook and place to side until needed.
Repeat the above process for second ear

Shining Light Spot for Nose: using white yarn
Make a chain of 3. Sl st in last ch from hook. Leave short yarn tail before cutting yarn and pulling through loop on hook. Place to side until needed in assembly.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, make a large knot with white yarn to represent the shining light spot instead of above instructions leaving a short yarn tail to attach during assembly.

Nose: using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 and place the following stitches in this order: 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish shaped circle closed. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (12 st total)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st 2 st, 2 sc in next 3 st, 1 sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next 3 st and 1 sc in last st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st worked in round. (18 st total)
Leave a yarn tail long enough to be able to sew the nose in place on the front of the snout during assembly before cutting your yarn and pull through last loop on hook.  Place to side until needed.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, skip round 2 and just make round 1 for his nose.

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 and place the following sts in this order: 2 sc, 3 hdc, 3 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish circle closed. Sl st in the top of the first st in round. (12 st total)
Leave a yarn tail length long enough to sew the eye on the hat during assembly process before cutting yarn and pulling tail through last loop on hook. Place to side until needed in assembly.
Repeat this process for second eye.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for a toddler sized hat, you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, do the following instructions instead of those given above:
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 1 sc, 2 hdc, 2 sc, 2 hdc, 1 sc. Pull ovalish circle closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 st total)

Eyebrows (Make 2): using black yarn
Make a chain of 6. Cut yarn leaving a yarn tail long enough to sew his eyebrows in place during assembly before pulling through loop on hook and placing to side. Repeat instructions for second eyebrow.

The feature above works well on toddler, youth, preteen, teen, womens and men sized hats. For slightly smaller features for toddler you can always switch to a G or H hook if wanted. For newborn to 12 months old sized hats, leave a small length of black yarn to the side to freehand stitch on skinny eyebrows on top of the eyes during assemble instead of chain instructions given above.

Finishing off steps:
Starting with the nose and snout assembly, use your yarn needle to take the yarn tail left on your shining light spot for nose and sew it on to the top left portion of the black nose. You can see my pictures on how I placed mine to look more like Snowy.  Once you have secured it in place, pull yarn to the backside of the black nose and fasten off.
Now take the black yarn tail left on your nose from previous step and using the yarn needle sew it in desired place on the front of the nose snout.   I placed mine just above the center of the front so it would be more near top like comic pictures but feel free to play around with your placement to find what you like the best.  Once it is secure, pull yarn to the inside of the snout and fasten off.
Next up use your yarn needle and the extra long white yarn tail on the snout piece to attach it to your snout to the bottom front of your beanie hat.  If you have opted to do the optional snout back, take the time to stitch that over opening first before sewing it on to the beanie hat.  You want to stop 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around stuff your nose/snout to desired fullness with the fibefill stuffing. Try not to overstuff this feature as it will bubble and can cause the area it is attached to on the beanie hat to sag or bunch. Not cute.  You just want to stuff it enough for it to hold the shape of the snout.   Once fully secured in place, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now take one of the tails left on an eye and use the yarn needle to sew it in desired place above the snout.  I placed mine just above the snout as you can see in pictures but you can move them around a little to see what works best for your hat.   Once sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.  Repeat for second eye.
Next you are going to use the tail on one of Snowy’s eyebrows and use your yarn needle to sew it in place above one of the eyes.  I did mine in an upside “U” shape, kind of a curve, as you can see in pictures.  Once you have sewed them on to your liking, pull yarn to the inside of the hat and fasten off.  Repeat process for second eyebrow.
Now all that is left is to attach Snowy’s ears.  If you want your ears to be more upright like in most of his comics, place the ears closer to the top center of the beanie hat when attaching them.  I wanted my ear tips to flip forward like in comics so I didn’t use anything inside the ears to keep them fully upright like a pipe cleaner that I would use during ear assembly for bunnies and such.  If you want your ears to be more downward floppy, place more to the sides of the head.  You can also tilt the ears so the front concave part is facing forward while on the side of the head too.  You can see where I placed mine in pictures below.  Once your ear is sewn in place, pull yarn to inside.  At this point on features that are on top of hat, I run another short row of stitches and knots on the inside to support them but it’s mandatory.  Fasten off and repeat the process for the second ear.
Go ahead and double check your work for any tails or loose ends you might of missed during process.  If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! One fun Snowy hat that Tintin fans and children will love. :)

This set of crochet character hats were inspired by the adorable Ilo and Milo from ilomilo video game.  I couldn’t resist making them in to these hats for my nephews to wear.  I can’t wait to see them wear them. :)

If you or someone you know is a gaming geek or just a fan of ilomilo, this is a fun but quick project you can make up.  The antennae are super easy as they are just a few rows of sc sewn shut around a pipe cleaner so the pipe cleaner does all the shaping work.

I would love to see your versions if you decide to make them so please send them my way or add it to the Ravelry project page. Happy crafting!

Row 6: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in round, make 1 dc in each of the following 12 st, hctog the last two st in row. Ch 1 and turn. (14 st total)
Row 7: Make a sc round, placing 3 sc in each corner and 1 sc in rest of the st around. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.
Leave an extra long tail to secure the face area on to the beanie hat after face area is ready to attach during finishing off steps before you cut the yarn, pull it through and set to side until needed.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 14. Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 11 ch across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2-3: Place 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following 11 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 4: Place 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following 11 st across. Ch 1 and turn. (12 dc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 10. Place 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 hdc in each of the following 7 ch across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 2-4: Place 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 5: Place 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in round, make 1 dc in each of the following 4 st, sctog the last two st in row. Ch 1 and turn. (6 st total)
Row 6: Make a sc round, placing 3 sc in each corner and 1 sc in rest of the st around. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.

Eyes (Make 2 per hat): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to secure on to face area during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until steps require it later.
Repeat process for second eye.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1  before placing 5 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (5 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 3 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (3 sc)

Curled Antennae for top of head: using black yarn and pipe cleaners (optional)
Row 1: Ch 21. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 19 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long tail. You are going to use this tail to stitch the antenna into a circular tube which will just be wide enough for a pipe cleaner or two to slip inside to help you hold your form.
You may choose to not use a pipe cleaner and add a little coated wire or stuffing. One way to get the curve of the antenna without using pipe cleaner or wire is to skip a st inbetween sewing together the area you want to curve and pull yarn tight before going to next one. :)

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 17. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 15 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. (16 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 13. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 11 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. (12 sc)

ilomilo's Ilo and Milo Character Hats Crochet Pattern (25)

Finishing off:
Taking the tail on one eye and your yarn needle sew the first eye to bottom right of face area. You can see my pictures on where I placed them on my hats.  Once attached, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Taking the tail on the second eye and your yarn needle attach it to the bottom left of face area. Again once attached in place, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Now using the leftover yarn tail on the face area and yarn needle secure the face area directly on to the front of the beanie hat in desired location.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat before fastening off.
Using tail on your antenna and your needle, stitch your antennae closed at end you are starting with that has tail at before stitching down your piece forming it in a circular tube around the pipe cleaner (again this is optional but I do recommend it as it helps keep it in an upright curved position). I just did a simple back and forth stitch as my sewing skills are less than stellar. Once you have the tube closed and reached the bottom end, move on to next step.
Using tail left on your antenna from previous step and needle, secure it in place on the top of your beanie hat. Once you have it sewn in your desired place, I centered mine on the first round on hat base, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now just check for any loose ends or tails you may have missed during assembly and if you find any, do so now.
All done!

Here are some of the pictures I took to show how these Ilo and Milo hats look once finished and worn:

Brraiiiinnsss?  I have to admit the gaming geek side of me loves making the characters from various games emerge from the yarn.  I’m pretty sure I gave out a squee when this one was done.  If you are a fan of this game or zombies in general, or maybe just have someone you know that loves them, this makes a fun little project.

Due to the mouth construction and all the little pieces to be sewn on, I would rate this crochet pattern to be advanced beginner and up.  I tried to make it as easy as possible to understand but I am still new to pattern making so please let me know if you have any questions or find anything confused.  I hope you like this cute zombie too. :)

Row 2: Sctog first 2 st in row and sl st in to the last st.
Leaving a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew on to mouth area when ready for assembly, cut yarn and pull through. Set to side for now. Repeat process for second gum area.

Mouth Assembly:
Taking the tail from one gum area and using your yarn needle, sew one of the pink gum areas in to the top left (when facing you) starting with end in corner and along top with curved area facing down. Once secure, pull yarn through to the back before fastening off.
Taking the tail from second pink gum area and needle, sew this part of the gums to the bottom right area of mouth. You will place one end in corner and sew along the bottom. (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own) Once secure, like before, pull yarn through to the back before fastening off.
Next we are going to do the teeth. I will give them to you in a clockwise circle starting with the top left corner.
For the first tooth, take the tail from your Extra Large Tooth, sew in to the top of the mouth on top and in the center of the upper pink gum area. Once secure pull yarn to back of mouth before fastening off.
For the second tooth, you will use one the Small Sized Teeth, attaching it to the center of the upper mouth area. Once secure pull yarn to back and fasten off.
For the third tooth, you will use one of the Medium Sized Teeth, sewing it in place in the upper right corner, about 2 stitches out from corner. Again sewing securely on before pulling to back and fastening off.
For the fourth tooth, you will use the tail left on second of the Medium Sized Teeth and yarn needle to secure this tooth in the bottom left corner, directly in corner touching left side of mouth. Once attached, pull yarn to back of mouth and fasten off.
For the fifth tooth, you will use the yarn left on the second of the Small Sized Teeth and attach it to the center of the bottom pink gum area on top of it so it looks like your tooth is sticking out of thickest part of gum. Once that is done, pull through and fasten off yarn in back of mouth area.

Finishing off:
I like to start with the bottom when making hats with features so I have plenty of room to work instead of squished up space if I judge wrong when starting at the top. It’s easier that way as you can always move next features up etc.
Now you should have a fully assembled mouth area with one long black mouth tail left. Using your yarn needle and the tail left on your mouth, attach it to your beanie near the center bottom of the front of your beanie. I just centered mine just above the last dc round on my hat. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine if you aren’t sure. Once the mouth area is secured in place on your beanie, pull the yarn tail to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Taking the tail of your larger nostril and yarn needle, sew your larger nostril in place just to the right of the center of the mouth. Pull yarn to back when secure and fasten off.
Now take the tail of the smaller nostril and use your needle to secure it in place just to the left of the center of the mouth area. I lined my nostrils up so they are slightly angled in and the bottoms of each both started at same st line so this one was shorter on top.
Next to assemble the eyes, take one pupil tail and sew in place on eye white in desired location. I wanted mine to look more like character so I didn’t center them or point them in same direction. You can see my pictures of my completed hat or zombie picture from Plants Vs. Zombie’s game art. Now repeat to attach pupil to the second eye.
Now that your eyes are assembled, take the white yarn tail from the larger eye and yarn needle to sew it in place on the right side of face, the same side as your larger nostril. Once you have secured it completely in place, pull your yarn to the inside of the hat before fastening it off.
Now repeat this process with the smaller eye but sew it in place on the left side of the face, the same side as your smaller nostril. One you have sewn it in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.
Check over your hat to make sure there aren’t any loose ends or tails you have not woven in and fastened off in your assembly. Do so now if you find any. All done!

Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 dc in circle. Pull circled closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (10 dc)

Mario and Luigi Beanie Hats Free Crochet Pattern

Growing up as a kid in the 80’s (shhh don’t tell anyone how old this geek is getting) I fell in love with the Mario brothers on first sight. I probably spent several hundred hours playing their games as they came out.  It was always a favorite of mine so I thought I would make these Mario and Luigi inspired beanies for my nephews to wear and went on to make a Yoshi hat that I will add to my blog soon for the third nephew to wear to be a part of the fun. :)

These are super easy for beginners to make and a fun but quick project. Go for it!

Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project.  Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size you want for your project.

Mario Hat Base: using red yarn for main color and white yarn for contrast trim
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the red hat base you are ready to start your Mario hat.
Taking white yarn, attach to the beanie where you left off in last round of hat pattern with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.

Luigi Hat Base: using green yarn for main color and white yarn for contrast trim
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice
Once you have completed your beanie for the green hat base you are ready to start your Luigi hat.
Taking white yarn, attach to the beanie where you left off in last round of hat pattern with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.

White Logo Circle (same for both Mario and Luigi hats): using white yarn
Round 1:  Ch 2 (does not count as a st throughout pattern) before placing 10 dc in a magic circle. Pull circle tight before sl st in top of beginning st.  (10 dc)
Round 2:  Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in first st and 3 dc in the next 9 st. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing *2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in following st*  repeat the pattern of * around through last st.  Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round. (30 sc)
Cut yarn leaving a long tail in order to sew your eye on to the beanie during assembly process. Pull yarn through and put to side until needed.
*For toddler sized hats, switch round 2 to hdc instead of dc.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, switch rounds 1 and 2 to hdc instead of dc.

Mario “M” letter for logo: using red yarn
Make a ch of 24 . Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew this chain on to your logo circle in the shape of the letter “M” during finishing off stage, before cutting yarn and pulling through stitch.
*For toddler sized hats, make a chain of 20 instead of 24.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a chain of 16 instead of 24.

Luigi “L” letter for logo: using green yarn
Make a ch of 12.  Leave a long enough tail pf yarn to be able to sew this chain on to your logo circle in the shape of the letter “L” before cutting yarn and pulling through stitch.
*For toddler sized hats, make a ch of 10 instead of 12.
*For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a ch of 8 instead of 12.

For Mario Hat:
Using the red yarn tail left on the ch for your letter “M” from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired place in the front center of your logo circle in to the shape of the letter “M”.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the back of your logo circle before fastening off. Skip down to instructions for both hats.

For Luigi Hat:
Using the red yarn tail left on the ch for your letter “M” from before and your yarn needle, sew the piece onto the desired place in the front center of your logo circle in to the shape of the letter “M”.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own.) Once secure, pull yarn to the back of your logo circle before fastening off. Now work on following pattern directions for both hats.

For Both hats:
Take the tail from your assembled logo in previous steps and your yarn needle to sew the logo on the front of your beanie hat in desired location. You can see where I placed the ones for my hats in the pictures for this post.  I find that leaving one or two of the last rounds of dc in your hat base below the bottom of the logo gives it a nice distance to show off the contrast trim and not be so high up that you can’t see it when looking at it worn straight on. Once you have the logo sew securely in place, pull your yarn to the inside of the beanie behind the logo before fastening off.
Now check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. You should be all done now!
