Holiday Stocking Free Crochet Pattern

I hate crochet patterns that make me sit and read them line by line while I crochet (normally scratching my head). I like simple and quick patterns that I can do while listening to an audiobook or watching a show so I made up these stockings without a pattern just winging it. I ended up liking it so much I not only wrote down the pattern but whipped up two matching ones for my other two nephews as well.

I chose single crochet so the little stocking stuffers wouldn’t fall out between larger stitches. I hope you like this as well.

Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Round 1: Sc in second ch from hook and each following ch until end of foundation chain. Ch 1 and turn. (50 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of the following stitches across until last one. 2 sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (52 sc)
Round 3: 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of the following stitches across until last one. 2 sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (54 sc)
Round 4: 2 sc in first sc. 1 sc in each of the following stitches across until last one. 2 sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (56 sc)
Round 5-9 : Sc in second ch from hook and each st across. Ch 1 and turn. (56 sc)
Round 10: Sctog the first two st. Sc in each st until last two sc. Sctog last two st together. Ch 1 and turn. (54 sc)
Round 11: Sctog the first two st. Sc in each st until last two sc. Sctog last two st together. Ch 1 and turn. (52 sc)
Round 12: Sctog the first two st. Sc in each st until last two sc. Sctog last two st together. Ch 1 and turn. (50 sc)

Round 14 – 34: Sc in each of the 30 st across from previous row. Ch 1 and turn. (30 sc)
Round 35: Sc in each of the 30 st across from previous row. (30 sc)
Round 36: Fold stocking in half. You should see stocking shape now. Ch 1 and turn working 1 sc into each matching stitch all the way around stocking until last 5 st at back of foot heel.
Sctog twice and slip stitch into final matching stitch. (This will give the heel a rounded appearance similar to toe.
Pull yarn through and fasten off.

Cuff (Contrast / Trim) top part: using contrast color yarn
With Contrast / Trim color, attach to last stitch from row 35 on top of sock part of stocking with sl st. This will be worked in round. Don’t turn stocking right side out until instructions as you want the nice side of the stitches to show when you fold it over top once you are finished.

Round 1 : Chain 1 and sc in each st around top circle. Sl st to top of 1st sc. Ch 1.(30 sc)
Round 2 – 7 : Sc in first st and all around to joining. Sl st to top of 1st sc. Ch 1. (30 sc)
Round 8: Sc in first st and all around to joining. (30 sc)
Pull yarn through with extra tail to finish off and weave through with your yarn needle. Tie off and weave any loose ends left to finish it off. Turn stocking right side out so seams are on inside.
Now fold down the top Contrast / Trim part. Voila. There is your stocking.

For a variety in my stockings I used a different trim for each of my nephews. One is white, another dark green and the last stripes of both colors (which I did by switching colors every two rounds). It helped make each their own.

Are you looking to embellish your stocking? You can easily add crocheted holly, one of the designs I used for the Christmas ornaments crochet patterns or like I did with a simple letter to show which child it is for under the tree :)

Project requires:
White yarn for main color-  (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn for these though you can use all medium to normal weight yarn)
Red yarn for accents
“H” hook  (5.00 mm)
Scissors or yarn cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in our patterns (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
sctog – single crochet two stitches together (US)

Pattern Instructions:

White Candy Cane Base: using white yarn
Round 1: Using white yarn, Chain 17 and turn. Sc in second chain from hook then sc in next 7 ch, sctog next two ch together and repeat sctog to end of chain. (12 sc)
Round 2:  Turn project so that you are now working in back loops of foundation chain. 2 sc into same stitch just worked to round cane tip. Sc in next st, 2 sc into next 8 st, sc in last 9 st.
Pull yarn through and weave until top of Candy cane hook. Leave a long tail and use extra length to tie on to top of candy cane to secure a simple loop for ornament to hang before finishing off piece.
(Note: If you like a heavier loop or more fancier looking loop, try making a simple loop of chain stitches. :) I did a loop of 22 ch stitches for this. )

Red piping on Candy Cane: using red yarn or contrasting color of your choice
For this part I simply started off with a length of red yarn. I cut roughly the distance around the cane times three to make sure I have enough, mostly because I hate tying in ends with the arthritis in my hands so I try to have as little of them as possible. 😉
Secure the red yarn to the bottom of the Candy Cane ornament where you want the red piping to start. I then just sewed the red yarn across in slanted position (see picture above) with my yarn needle, securing it in place by looping twice through each end where I wanted it to stay.
Pull extra yarn through and finish off.
(Note: If you want a thicker banded candy cane piping try making a chain stitch length and weaving it into place with an extra long tail.)

That’s it.  It’s a pretty simple project for beginners and the ornament set make great little holiday gifts to go into baskets or stockings.

christmas tree ornament crochet pattern

Pattern Instructions:

Main tree part: using main color green yarn

Note: Leave short length at top of tree (starting point) to help secure on tree topper.
Round 1: Chain 2. 2 sc into the 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sc)
Round 2: 2 sc in both sc from previous row. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Round 3: 2 sc in first sc and 1 sc in each of remaining sc. Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc)
Round 4-8: Repeat process in round 3 increasing each row by 1 sc until you reached your desired length / size. (I finished with 8 rows which ended up with 10 sc across before last round) Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc)
Round 9 (or final row if you add additional rows to make Christmas tree ornament in a larger size): Sc in each sc across. (10 sc)
Pull yarn through and finish off.
If you like a more finished look to the ornament’s border like I did, before fastening off yarn, Ch 1 then sl st in each stitch all the way around the hat to give it a nice outline. Sl st in to first st. Fasten off.
Note: You can adjust the size and length easily. If you want a wider base for a much larger decoration, start of with 4 chains in round 1 and increase each round as instructions. If you just want a longer tree than in pattern, just continue to add rows like row 3, increasing 1 sc per row until desired length.

Tree topper part: using yellow / gold yarn
I just wanted a simple ball on top of my tree but you can go fancy and make a mini star or an angel. I was also feeling a little bit lazy so I didn’t feel like weaving in more colors or getting too detailed.
In magic circle, ch 1 and make 4 sc into circle.
Pull yarn through and use extra length to tie on to top of hat and secure a simple loop for ornament to hang before finishing off piece.
(Note: If you like a heavier loop or more fancier looking loop, try making a simple loop of chain stitches. :) I did a loop of 22 ch stitches for this. You can also change yarn colors for this step if you want to have a contrasting color.)

*For ornament accents I just tied in some scrap yarn left over from previous Christmas ornaments with double knots to finish off piece.*

That’s it.  It’s a pretty simple project for beginners and the ornament set make great little holiday gifts to go into baskets or stockings.

christmas present ornament crochet pattern free

Pattern Instructions:

Green Present Base (Main color): Using main yarn color for this project (green)
Round 1: Chain 9. Put 1 Sc in second ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc)
Round 2-7: Work 1 sc into each sc across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc). (or continue until desired length)
Round 8:  Work 1 sc into each sc across. (8 sc) Pull yarn through and fasten off.
Finish off or if you like a more finished look like me, slip stitch in each stitch all the way around the hat to give it a nice outline.
Note: I always try for a perfect square so I will fold from corner to opposite corner to see if it is a perfect square before finishing off.  For mine it worked out to be 8 rounds total.

Red trim and accents on Green Present Ornament:
Using Red yarn (Accent color) make a chain of 9.
Pull yarn through and leave extra length to tie on to top of present and secure a simple loop for ornament to hang before finishing off piece.
Make a total of 2 chains following above.
(Note: If you like a heavier loop or more fancier looking loop, try making a simple loop of chain stitches. :) I did a loop of 22 ch stitches for this. )

Finishing off ornament:
Using a yarn needle I fixed the “ribbon” parts on to the present in a crossed position like in picture, securing it by weaving through from end to the other of Green present in place.
I then used a scarp of red yarn to bring through piece around top piece of red present embellishment, tied a double knot then finished it in a standard shoelace kind of bow.

That’s it.  It’s a pretty simple project for beginners and the ornament set make great little holiday gifts to go into baskets or stockings.
