Pompompurin “Purin” the Sanrio Dog Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Pompompurin, who is called Purin for short, is a golden retriever dog character first introduced by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty, in 1996 . He is mostly depicted wearing his chocolate brown beret and with a curling smile on his face but you can find tons of images with him having different expressions if you want to change it up for your own beanie. He is also often found with the adorable Muffin (a little hamster friend), Scone ( a little mouse friend) and even a little bird friend.

You can learn more about Purin and his friends here.

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe
The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peas Pre-Teen / Teen / Women Double Crochet Beanie Pattern, which you can find  here as a foundation for the projectWant it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color dark cream or light yellow yarn and contrast medium to dark brown colored yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

We will start with the contrast medium to dark brown yarn for beginning of hat to create Purin’s beret look:
Beret – make first 4 rounds (first 3 rounds from pattern for newborn to 12 month sizes) in dark brown yarn from Easy Peasy pattern of your desired size as pattern calls for.
Insert Row 1: Insert in to easy peasy pattern 1 round of sc done in stitch pattern that easy peasy pattern calls for following row in front loops only. Fasten off  brown yarn.
Insert Row 2: Now sl st with dark cream or light yellow yarn on unworked back loop from previous row. Work one round of 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of 1st st in round.
Now resume pattern as how row 5 (row 4 for infant sizes) calls for from pattern not counting your insert rounds in your round total. Go ahead and work rest of hat as easy peasy pattern calls for in instructions.
Fasten off.
*Note: My beret insert Row 1 gave a flippy look when finished with the lip of the beret sticking out a bit. If you don’t like this look you can make Row 1 just another round of 1 sc each around in front loops only so it will lay more flat. Another option is to just create the beret as a separate piece as above instructions call for and just do one insert row of 1 sc around instead of above before sewing your beret on top of completed beanie.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to move on to creating the rest of your Purin hat.

Ear Front: using dark cream or light yellow yarn
Row 1: Ch 5, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, and 2 dc in remaining ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)

Row 3-5: Place 1 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 6 st. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 6: Place 1 dc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)

Row 12: Ch 1 and turn. Working through both pieces work 1 sc in each st down edge of ear. When you reach the original 5 st from Row 1, place 2 sc in each of those 5 st, before resuming 1 sc in each st up the side until at st you started round at placing an additional 2 sc in same st.
Leave long tail to attach to side of Purin’s head before cutting yarn, pulling through and placing assembled ear to side until needed for assembly.
Repeat for second ear but Ch 1 and turn at start of assembly before lining up your ear front in front of the ear back so that when you attach the ears both with have ears with the good side of your sc round facing forward. :)

Mouth lines: using medium to dark brown contrast yarn
Ch 13, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch. Ch 9.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
Ch 9. Make a sl st in 2nd ch from and next ch. Ch 6.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through.

Finishing off:
Starting with the nose, take the yarn tail from your nose and your yarn needle to sew Purin’s nose in desired location on hat. I made my own just a little under halfway mark of rounds down in cream color, not counting the beret rounds in number but feel free to play around with your own but make sure you will have enough room to add your mouth lines. Once you have secured the nose fully in place, pull yarn to the inside of the beret and fastening off.
Now taking tail left at end of the mouth lines, use your yarn needle to sew the mouth lines in shape of your preference I did the curly “W” shape I found in many of Purin’s pictures (You can see this in my pictures and Purin image near top of pattern for reference). Once you have his mouth secured in place, pull yarn to inside of the beanie and fasten off.
Next up take the tail from one of his eyes and using your yarn needle sew the eye to one side of the face area of your beanie. Again once secure, pull yarn to inside of beret before fastening off yarn. Repeat for second eye.
All that is left now is attaching Purin’s assembled ears from pattern instructions above. Using your yarn needle and the tail left on one ear, sew it in desired place on side of beanie a little under the beret. You want to attach it by the / side of the top of the ear created by the st decrease of last few rows attaching it in a vertical manner. This is help your ears keep front facing ear appearance instead of hanging or floppy ears. Once you have the ears sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of hat. I like to reinforce the joining of large features, like ears, with a few more stitches on inside but it’s not necessary. Once done, fasten off. Repeat for the second ear.
Now just take the time to check over your work to see if there are any yarn tails or loose ends you may have missed before.  If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off now.
All done :) One super chibi cute golden retriever puppy named Purin hat ready to wear.

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Clifford the Red dog is one of my favorite book characters from my young childhood.  When I started thinking up book characters to turn into character hats for my mother to wear in her class during reading time, he was on top of my list.  I have been having so much fun making hats and items for her classroom. They have been a big hit with both the children and the teachers.  I had to take a break to work on some special projects and the kids all started asking if I was okay because they were missing out on new hats. 😉

This is an advanced beginner friendly pattern.  If you can crochet in the round you will find this easier than you think.  I hope you enjoy bringing your Clifford hat together like I have.  I tend to fall in love with all of my hats during the creation process. Happy crafting!

Hat Base: in main color yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Clifford the Red Dog children’s book character hat! :)

*Snout / Nose Back*: using red yarn – optional
This step is an optional step in creating this character hat but one I highly recommend.  When you wear crochet hats, the stitches spread open to accommodate heads. This is how they stay on.  So when you have large stuffed features, it helps to have a backing to that area to prevent stuffing from escaping on to the wearer’s head, which can be rather itchy. 😉 It also helps keep the life of the hat longer.

Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew your eye whites directly on to the beanie during hat assembly.
Repeat process for second eye.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, you will work the st in this order: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 2 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 sc. Sl st closed. (9 st total)  and for 2nd round switch all dc stitches to hdc.

Ear Back and Assembly (Make 2): using main color red yarn
Repeat instructions for Rows 1-14 of the Ear Fronts but do not fasten off at the end of Row 14.  Ch 1 and turn.
Row 10: Place a finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on, lining up the st.  ( I like to use safety pins to mark the ends of mine so I don’t have to stop and keep checking to see if they line up as I can be a bit OCD about that kind of thing. 😉 but it is not a necessary step.)  Now work a round of 1 sc in each st around perimeter of Clifford’s ear. When you reach the bottom of ear you can make 2 sc in each of the 5 center bottom st to give it a nice rounded appearance like I have in my picture.
Make sure you leave a tail that is long enough to secure the ear in place on the beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through last stitch and placing to side.
Repeat process for second ear.

*The feature above works well for toddler, youth, teen and adult sizes.  For newborn to 12 month sizes,  switch to hdc for the whole ear pattern instead of dc. This will scale it down to a proper size for these hats.

(third hair) Ch 6.  Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the next 4 ch. Sl st back in to the starting st for this hair.

Clifford the Red Dog Children’s Book Character Hat Crochet Pattern (19)

Finishing off:
Starting off we will be assembling the nose/ snout part of Clifford.  Take the tail left on the black nose for him and your yarn needle to sew it in desired location near the top of the front of the nose/snout piece.  Don’t make it too high or it won’t show when wearing it from the front and too low you won’t be able to stitch the mouth on.  You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine.  Once you have it secured in place, use the leftover yarn tail to freehand stitch on his mouth lines.  Once completed, pull your yarn to inside of nose/snout and fasten off.
Now take the red yarn tail from your nose/snout piece and use the yarn needle to attach it to the nose/snout back piece (if you did this step) or on to the beanie hat if skipped nose/snout backing.  Stop about 3/4 of the way around to lightly stuff the nose/snout piece with the fiberfill stuffing. You just want to do enough so that you get the full rounded appearance you desire but don’t over stuff it.  If you overfill this feature it will bubble up in the back making the area around the hat where it is attached bunch up or sag when wearing it.   Once you have completely assembled the snout and attached it to the beanie, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off.
Taking the tail from one eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it on place on top of your eye white. I placed mine near the bottom of the eye to be more like the illustrations I found of Clifford. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine but feel free to play around with your placement as you desire.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to the back of the eye white before fastening off. Repeat for second eye.
Now you want to use the tail from one assembled eye and your yarn needle to sew one eye in to the proper place on beanie. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my Clifford hat.   Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Now go ahead and repeat this process for second eye.
Next using the tail left behind on one of the Clifford’s assembled ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the side top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. (You can see my pictures for where I placed my own.)  If you want longer hanging ears place lower on side of beanie. For shorter ones, place higher up on beanie hat.  Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off any extra length.  Repeat this process for the second ear.
All that is left now is his three little hairs piece on top of his head.  Taking the black yarn tail from his hairs and your yarn needle, sew them in place on top of the beanie hat.  For my character hat I placed it in the center of beginning circle of round 1 for the beanie base but feel free to move it around to see where you like it best before attaching it.  Once fully attached, pull yarn to inside of beanie and fasten off.
Now take the time to check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so now if you find any.

When I saw Rilakkuma (Relax Bear) and Korilakkuma (Little Bear) I just knew I had to make them into some crochet character hats.  They are too sweet not to make.  I originally planned on making one Korilakkuma hat in toddler size for one of my nieces to wear but ended up making a Rilakkuma for her mother to wear as well.  I’m kind of jealous of the hats. I may have to take some time soon and make myself one to keep. :)

If you aren’t familiar with these cute chibi bears from San-X, you can learn more about them here.

Hat Base: in main color yarn (Medium to dark brown for Rilakkuma and tan/ khaki color yarn for Korilakkuma)

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice For the bottom contrast trim, using your contrast color yarn (Golden yellow for Rilakkuma and pink for Korilakkuma), attach to st where you left off from in last round of beanie hat with a sl st.  Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and in each st around. Sl st to the top of the 1st st in round before fastening off.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your cute Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma character hats.

The following instructions work for both hats, just pay attention to colors specified for each hat:

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Round 1:  In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 8 hdc in to circle. Pull circle closed and sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (8 hdc)
Leave a tail long enough to sew eye in place during assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through. Put to side until needed during finishing off steps. Repeat instructions for second eye.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 6 hdc instead.

Nose / Mouth Lines : using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in to circle. Pull circle closed before placing a sl st through the top of the 1st st in round. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 4. Starting at 2nd ch from hook, place 1 sc in 2nd ch and in each of the next 2 ch. Sl st back in starting st. Ch 4 and place 3 sc in chain like previous chain starting with 2nd ch from hook. Sl st back in to starting st.
Leave a tail long enough to sew nose and mouth lines in place on the colored face area during assembly before cutting yarn then pulling through. Put to side until needed during finishing off steps.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, make 4 sc instead of 6 sc in Round 1 and in Round 2 make two ch 3 tails but do not work sc in to them. Just fasten off yarn at end of first mouth line tail. Reattach black yarn to starting st with a sl st before making second chain of 3 and leave long enough of a yarn tail to sew the nose and mouth in place on colored face area before cutting yarn.

Colored face area: using white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing the following st in this order: 3 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 4 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Pull circle closed, it should be in a long ovalish shape. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in the round. (14 st total)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 1 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 st, place 2 dc in each of the next 3 st, 1 dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in each of the following st and 1 dc in final st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in the round. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 st, place 2 sc in each of the next 6 st, 1 sc in the next 4 st, 2 sc in each of the following 6 st and 1 sc in the final st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in the round. (32 sc)
Leave a tail long enough to sew the colored face area on to beanie during assembly before cutting yarn then pulling through. Put to side until needed during finishing off steps.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month sizes, switch to hdc for Round 2 and skip round 3 increase all together.

Ear Front (Make 2): Using contrast color yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc in to the circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st into the top of the 1st st in round. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 2 before placing 2 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 8 st, leaving last 3 st unworked. Sl st in to side of last st worked in this round. (18 dc)
Cut yarn, pull through and fasten off. Repeat process for second ear front.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sizes of the Easy Peasy beanie hats. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, switch to hdc instead of dc for the ear fronts and backs.
Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma Character Beanie Hats Crochet Pattern (24)
Ear Back and Ear Assembly (Make 2):
Using main color yarn
Repeat Rounds 1 – 2 of the Ear Front done in previous step but do not fasten off at end of Round 2.
Round 3: Place one completed Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working up, lining up the stitches. Now Ch 1 and turn. Working through both pieces make 1 sc through first st on both, then work *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in following st * around until you reach the first st from Round 2, which is right before your flat ear, place your sc in this st before making a sl st back in to the same st, sc in to side of st and in each of the 3 unworked st from previous round, 1 sc in to side of 1st st from round and finish off with sl st in to the top of the 1st st in this round.
Leave a long enough tail to ensure you can completely secure your ear on to the top side of beanie hat during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and putting to side until called for in finishing off assembly. Repeat for second ear.

Rilakkuma and Korilakkuma Character Beanie Hats Crochet Pattern (29)

Finishing off:
Starting with the face area, take the yarn tail left on the black nose / mouth lines piece and your yarn needle to sew your nose / mouth lines on place on to the colored face area. See my picture above to see how I placed my own.  Once you have it secured in place, pull the yarn through to the back of the face area and fasten off.
Now taking the tail left on your assembled face area and your yarn needle, sew it in place directly on to your beanie hat.  You can play around to see how you like it placed. I personally normally but the bottom of my face area right above the last round of dc st in my beanie hats so you still get the color above the trim but it isn’t too high on face.   Once you have it nice and secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie before fastening off. For eyes, take tail of one eye and use your yarn needle to sew it in desired place on either side of the colored face area.  You can see my pictures to see how I placed them on my completed hats in this set.  Once you have the eye in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.  Repeat process for second eye.
Now we are going to place the ears in place on the hat.  You can move them around to see how you like them on your hat before attaching.  It drives me a bit nutty if mine aren’t exactly symmetrical in position so I use a couple safety pins to attach them before I start sewing with the tail and yarn needle in to place.  As before, once you have it securely in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off. Repeat for second ear.
Now you just need to take a few moments to look over your assembled hat to check for any tails or loose ends you might of missed out on during assembly process. If you find any, fasten them off now.
That’s it. All done!  One chibi Rilakkuma and/ or Korilakkuma character hat ready to wear. :)

This set of crochet character hats were inspired by the adorable Ilo and Milo from ilomilo video game.  I couldn’t resist making them in to these hats for my nephews to wear.  I can’t wait to see them wear them. :)

If you or someone you know is a gaming geek or just a fan of ilomilo, this is a fun but quick project you can make up.  The antennae are super easy as they are just a few rows of sc sewn shut around a pipe cleaner so the pipe cleaner does all the shaping work.

I would love to see your versions if you decide to make them so please send them my way or add it to the Ravelry project page. Happy crafting!

Leave an extra long tail to secure the face area on to the beanie hat after face area is ready to attach during finishing off steps before you cut the yarn, pull it through and set to side until needed.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 14. Place 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 11 ch across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 2-3: Place 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following 11 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)

Row 2-4: Place 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 5: Place 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in round, make 1 dc in each of the following 4 st, sctog the last two st in row. Ch 1 and turn. (6 st total)
Row 6: Make a sc round, placing 3 sc in each corner and 1 sc in rest of the st around. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.

Eyes (Make 2 per hat): using black yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 6 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (6 hdc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to secure on to face area during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until steps require it later.
Repeat process for second eye.

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1  before placing 5 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (5 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 3 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed before making a sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (3 sc)

Curled Antennae for top of head: using black yarn and pipe cleaners (optional)
Row 1: Ch 21. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 19 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st. Ch 1 and turn. (20 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st.
Before you cut your yarn, leave a long tail. You are going to use this tail to stitch the antenna into a circular tube which will just be wide enough for a pipe cleaner or two to slip inside to help you hold your form.
You may choose to not use a pipe cleaner and add a little coated wire or stuffing. One way to get the curve of the antenna without using pipe cleaner or wire is to skip a st inbetween sewing together the area you want to curve and pull yarn tight before going to next one. :)

*This feature will work on youth, pre-teen, teen, womens and mens sizes.  If you are making them for a toddler, do the following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 17. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 15 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. Ch 1 and turn. (16 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st. (16 sc)

*If you are making newborn to 12 month sizes, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 13. Place 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and 1 sc in each of the following 11 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. Ch 1 and turn. (12 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 11 st. (12 sc)

ilomilo's Ilo and Milo Character Hats Crochet Pattern (25)

Finishing off:
Taking the tail on one eye and your yarn needle sew the first eye to bottom right of face area. You can see my pictures on where I placed them on my hats.  Once attached, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Taking the tail on the second eye and your yarn needle attach it to the bottom left of face area. Again once attached in place, pull yarn to back of face area and fasten off.
Now using the leftover yarn tail on the face area and yarn needle secure the face area directly on to the front of the beanie hat in desired location.  Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat before fastening off.
Using tail on your antenna and your needle, stitch your antennae closed at end you are starting with that has tail at before stitching down your piece forming it in a circular tube around the pipe cleaner (again this is optional but I do recommend it as it helps keep it in an upright curved position). I just did a simple back and forth stitch as my sewing skills are less than stellar. Once you have the tube closed and reached the bottom end, move on to next step.
Using tail left on your antenna from previous step and needle, secure it in place on the top of your beanie hat. Once you have it sewn in your desired place, I centered mine on the first round on hat base, pull yarn to the inside of the beanie hat and fasten off.
Now just check for any loose ends or tails you may have missed during assembly and if you find any, do so now.
All done!

Cookie Monster Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Cookie Monster will always remain one of my favorite Sesame Street characters of all time. I never could get enough of him and Elmo.. oh and then Count.  When I found out that one of my little heroes with Juvenile Arthritis was a big fan of Cookie Monster I just had to try to make him up into a hat.  I love his googly crazy eyes. :)

This is actually a pretty good hat project for beginners and advanced beginners to crochet up.  It was definitely a fun project and I plan on make more of the Sesame Street characters in the near future to make up a set of patterns, for free of course.

Eye backs (*optional step – Make 2): using white yarn

Row 4: Skipping 1st st, place 1 sc in second st, make 1 sc in the next 3 st, sctog next 2 st, now continue working around perimeter of mouth placing 1 sc in each st and 2 sc in each of the mouth’s upper corners until you reach back to start of round. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.

Finishing off:
I like to start working from the bottom up on my hats so I don’t mismanage my space and end up with features all scrunched together. This way if you misjudge your space you can always move the next feature up the hat a little further than you planned. :) I often will use a wig model Styrofoam head and straight pins to place my features before I sew them to get a feel for how they will turn out. I know I’m a little OCD about my crochet. Too bad I’m not about my house being organized…
Taking your yarn tail from your mouth you completed in last steps and your yarn needle, sew his open mouth in desired location on the hat. I normally start features just above the last round of dc on my hat bases but feel free to play around and find what you like the best. I find that if I stitch around the perimeter and then place a few stitched into the middle of the smile it will keep it from bubbling up in the center.  Once you have sewn Cookie Monster’s mouth in to place, pull your leftover yarn tail to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Next we will assemble the eyes prior to attaching them to the beanie hat. Taking the tail from one black eye pupil and your yarn needle, sew it in desired location on one eye white front. I placed mine in oddball positions like in picture of Cookie Monster near top of blog so he would look more silly. You can reference my pictures as well to get an idea of how it looks. Once secure, pull your yarn to the inside of the eye white front before fastening off. Repeat this process for second eye pupil.

*Attaching the eye back. This is an optional step for those that opted to make the eye backs to keep the stuffing from falling out. Again I highly recommend this step and it really doesn’t take much more time. It’s appreciated in the long run. Taking the tail from one eye front, line up an eye back with back side facing in and use your yarn needle to sew the two pieces together so that the eye back will close the bottom up of the eye front. You want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way around to add your fiberfill stuffing (or desired stuffing) to the eyes before you close them up. You want to add enough stuffing that the eyes keep an nice rounded appearance for the 3D eyes but not so much that your eye back bulges out. This over stuffing will make make your area around the eye when attached bunch up and sometimes the eyes sag. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Do not fasten off the remainder tail as this will be used next. Now you will use your assembled eye and tail with your yarn needle to sew the assembled eye directly on to your beanie hat. You can reference my pictures to see where I placed the eyes on my Cookie Monster character hat but again, feel free to play around to find what you like the best. Once secure, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.

If you skipped the optional eye back steps, now you will take your yarn needle and the tail left on one eye front to sew it into place directly on to your beanie hat in desired place. You will want to stop about 2/3 to 3/4 around to stuff it until you reach the rounded appearance of the eye you are looking for. Once you have stuffed it with desired amount, sew up the rest of the way around. Once securely in place, pull yarn to inside of beanie hat and fasten off. Repeat process with second eye.
Now take a minute to double check your Cookie Monster beanie hat to check for any tails or yarns ends you might of missed during assembly. If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! One super easy and cute Cookie Monster crocheted character hat sure to pass along a few smiles. I hope you like my hat. I’m working on making each of the Sesame Street characters come alive in crochet hats. I can’t just make one right? 😉

This hat was a special request from a loved one and a favorite project of mine for what it stands for.  The loved one wanted a set of gay pride hats to where with a fellow attendee to our local Gay Pride parade later this month.  I am honored to be a part of their day and was so happy to make the hats for them that I pushed more than a few projects aside to design this up asap.  They promised me lots of pictures from the day so I can’t wait to see them. :)

This is a very beginner friendly double crochet hat pattern and works up really fast. I made them both in a day of working at them here and there. Happy crafting!

Brraiiiinnsss?  I have to admit the gaming geek side of me loves making the characters from various games emerge from the yarn.  I’m pretty sure I gave out a squee when this one was done.  If you are a fan of this game or zombies in general, or maybe just have someone you know that loves them, this makes a fun little project.

Due to the mouth construction and all the little pieces to be sewn on, I would rate this crochet pattern to be advanced beginner and up.  I tried to make it as easy as possible to understand but I am still new to pattern making so please let me know if you have any questions or find anything confused.  I hope you like this cute zombie too. :)

Row 2: Sctog first 2 st in row and sl st in to the last st.
Leaving a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew on to mouth area when ready for assembly, cut yarn and pull through. Set to side for now. Repeat process for second gum area.

Mouth Assembly:
Taking the tail from one gum area and using your yarn needle, sew one of the pink gum areas in to the top left (when facing you) starting with end in corner and along top with curved area facing down. Once secure, pull yarn through to the back before fastening off.
Taking the tail from second pink gum area and needle, sew this part of the gums to the bottom right area of mouth. You will place one end in corner and sew along the bottom. (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed my own) Once secure, like before, pull yarn through to the back before fastening off.
Next we are going to do the teeth. I will give them to you in a clockwise circle starting with the top left corner.
For the first tooth, take the tail from your Extra Large Tooth, sew in to the top of the mouth on top and in the center of the upper pink gum area. Once secure pull yarn to back of mouth before fastening off.
For the second tooth, you will use one the Small Sized Teeth, attaching it to the center of the upper mouth area. Once secure pull yarn to back and fasten off.
For the third tooth, you will use one of the Medium Sized Teeth, sewing it in place in the upper right corner, about 2 stitches out from corner. Again sewing securely on before pulling to back and fastening off.
For the fourth tooth, you will use the tail left on second of the Medium Sized Teeth and yarn needle to secure this tooth in the bottom left corner, directly in corner touching left side of mouth. Once attached, pull yarn to back of mouth and fasten off.
For the fifth tooth, you will use the yarn left on the second of the Small Sized Teeth and attach it to the center of the bottom pink gum area on top of it so it looks like your tooth is sticking out of thickest part of gum. Once that is done, pull through and fasten off yarn in back of mouth area.

Finishing off:
I like to start with the bottom when making hats with features so I have plenty of room to work instead of squished up space if I judge wrong when starting at the top. It’s easier that way as you can always move next features up etc.
Now you should have a fully assembled mouth area with one long black mouth tail left. Using your yarn needle and the tail left on your mouth, attach it to your beanie near the center bottom of the front of your beanie. I just centered mine just above the last dc round on my hat. You can reference my pictures to see how I placed mine if you aren’t sure. Once the mouth area is secured in place on your beanie, pull the yarn tail to the inside of the beanie hat before fastening off.
Taking the tail of your larger nostril and yarn needle, sew your larger nostril in place just to the right of the center of the mouth. Pull yarn to back when secure and fasten off.
Now take the tail of the smaller nostril and use your needle to secure it in place just to the left of the center of the mouth area. I lined my nostrils up so they are slightly angled in and the bottoms of each both started at same st line so this one was shorter on top.
Next to assemble the eyes, take one pupil tail and sew in place on eye white in desired location. I wanted mine to look more like character so I didn’t center them or point them in same direction. You can see my pictures of my completed hat or zombie picture from Plants Vs. Zombie’s game art. Now repeat to attach pupil to the second eye.
Now that your eyes are assembled, take the white yarn tail from the larger eye and yarn needle to sew it in place on the right side of face, the same side as your larger nostril. Once you have secured it completely in place, pull your yarn to the inside of the hat before fastening it off.
Now repeat this process with the smaller eye but sew it in place on the left side of the face, the same side as your smaller nostril. One you have sewn it in place, pull yarn to inside of hat and fasten off.
Check over your hat to make sure there aren’t any loose ends or tails you have not woven in and fastened off in your assembly. Do so now if you find any. All done!

I decided to make myself some fun hats to wear with or without my newly acquired wigs since I have been losing my hair.  I came up with this idea for a blue curly pigtail hat to wear for World Arthritis Day or just for fun.  I will be making some in different hair colors for some small children as requested by their parents.  I’ve had several adults ask me to make this for them as well. :)

Since I really do hate the sewing together part of hats, I designed it so each pigtail is in one piece versus each curl being a separate piece to sew on.  I think it’s a great project for beginners.  It looks a lot more complicated than it actually is to make. Happy crafting!

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your own curly pigtail hat!

Bow (Make 2):  using purple contrast yarn
Row 1: Ch 14, work 1 dc in the 3rd ch from hook (first 2 ch does not count as st throughout pattern) and place 1 dc in each of the following 11 ch.  Ch 2 and turn. (12 dc)

Row 3: Make 1 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in each of the following st across. Ch 1 and turn. (12 dc)
Row 4: Work a round of 1 sc in each st, 3 sc in each corner to give a more rounded appearance, completely around the perimeter of your bow piece. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st once you have worked it all the way around.
Make sure you leave a long enough tail to secure your bow in place on the beanie hat during finishing off steps.

This size bow will work great on toddler through adult sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, do the following:
Row 1: Ch 10, work 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook (first 2 ch does not count as st throughout pattern) and place 1 hdc in each of the following 7 ch.  Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 2: Make 1 hdc in 1st st and place 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (8 hdc)
Row 3: Make 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following st across. Ch 1 and turn. (8 hdc)

Row 4: Work a round of 1 sc in each st, 3 sc in each corner to give a more rounded appearance, completely around the perimeter of your bow piece. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st once you have worked it all the way around.

Curly Pigtails (Make 2): using main color blue yarn

First Curl

Starting off to make a ch of 37. In 3rd ch from hook, place 3 dc and place 3 dc in each of the following 23 ch. In next ch place 2 hdc. Sl st back in to the next ch in the  foundation chain.

Second Curl

Sl st in next ch now, leaving the rest of the ch unworked for now ch 27. Place 3 dc in the 3rd ch from hook, then make 3 dc in each of the following 23 ch and make 2 hdc in last ch before making a sl st back in to foundation chain in the next ch from start of curl.

Third Curl

Sl st in next ch now, leaving rest of the foundation ch unworked for now, ch 22.  Starting in 3rd ch from hook, place 3 dc in 3rd chain and in each of the following 18 ch.  In last ch before foundation chain, make 2 hdc before sl st back in to foundation chain in ch after the starting one from start of curl.

Fourth Curl

Sl st in next ch now, leaving the rest of the foundation ch unworked for now, ch 22.  Starting in 3rd ch from hook, place 3 dc in 3rd chain and in each of the following 18 ch.  In last ch before foundation chain, make 2 hdc before sl st back in to foundation chain in ch after the starting one from start of curl.

Fifth Curl

For the fifth curl, sl st in next ch now, leaving rest of ch unworked for now, ch 17.  Make 3 dc in 3rd ch from your hook, 3 dc in following 13 ch and 2 hdc in last ch before you sl st back in to foundation chain in ch next on chain.

Sixth Curl

For the sixth curl, sl st in next ch before leaving rest of ch unworked for now and ch 17.  Make 3 dc in 3rd ch from your hook, 3 dc in following 13 ch and 2 hdc in last ch before you sl st back in to foundation chain in ch next on chain.

Leave a long enough tail on your pigtail in order to be able to securely sew it in to place on your beanie hat during assembly before you cut the yarn, pull it through and place it to side until needed.

Repeat process for your second pigtail.

This size pigtail will work great on youth through adult sized hats.  For toddler sized hats, do the following:

First Curl

Starting off to make a ch of 23. In 3rd ch from hook, place 3 hdc and place 3 hdc in each of the following 15 ch. In next ch place 2 hdc. Sl st back in to the next ch in the  foundation chain.

Second Curl

Sl st in next ch now, leaving the rest of the ch unworked for now ch 16. Place 3 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook, then make 3 hdc in each of the following 12 ch and make 2 hdc in last ch before making a sl st back in to foundation chain in the next ch from start of curl.

Fifth Curl

For the fifth curl, sl st in next ch now, leaving rest of ch unworked for now, ch 13.  Make 3 hdc in 3rd ch from your hook, 3 hdc in following 9 ch and 2 hdc in last ch before you sl st back in to foundation chain in ch next on chain.

Sixth Curl (Optional – if you are doing newborn to 3 month size, you may want to eliminate either the sixth or second curl to make the pigtails less overwhelming in relation to hat)

For the sixth curl, sl st in next ch before leaving the last ch unworked for now and ch 10.  Make 3 hdc in 3rd ch from your hook, 3 hdc in following 6 ch and 2 hdc in last ch before you sl st back in to foundation chain in ch next on chain.

Leave a long enough tail on your pigtail in order to be able to securely sew it in to place on your beanie hat during assembly before you cut the yarn, pull it through and place it to side until needed.

Repeat process for your second pigtail.

Arthritis Awareness Curly Pigtail Beanie Hat Crochet Pattern (3)

Finishing off:

Take the tail left on one of your curly pigtails and your yarn needle to sew it on to the top side of your beanie hat. You can see where I placed my own. If you want your pigtails to hang longer than hat, place lower on hat, if you like it equal or shorter to length of hat, place further towards the top.  Once secure, pull your yarn to the inside of the beanie and fasten off.  Repeat process for the second pigtail.

Next take the tail left on one your purple (or desired color) hair bows and your yarn needle to sew it to the top of one attached curly pigtails on hat. Again you can reference my pictures on where I placed my own.  I like to fold the center of my bows in half and place a few back / forth stitches to help them retain that shape before sewing it on to my location.  I like how the bows look when narrowed in the center but that is totally optional and up to your own preferences. I like to do this step on top of the pigtails that are already attached to beanie as a double step to secure the pigtails to the hat with the bow. :)

Once you have it sewn in to place, pull your yarn to the inside of hat before fastening off.  Now repeat process for second bow.

Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed throughout assembly process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

All done!  Now you have one completed curly pigtail hat!  I love mine. I even wore it to go to the emergency room on Paint the World Blue for Arthritis Day. Boy did it get a lot of attention and kept the smiles going around. :)

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick Character Hat Free Crochet Pattern

My Diary of a Wimpy Kid Greg hat was such a big hit at auction at the school my Mom teaches at, I had to make several more Greg hats to make everyone happy. One young kid is a big Rodrick fan so I designed this hat just for him.  I was in a rush to get it to him before the end of the school year so I didn’t get the best pictures but hopefully they still let you see the details to try your own.

You can learn more about Diary of a Wimpy Kid here or see the book series here.  It really is a great children’s book series.

My nephew took one look at the Greg and Roderick hats before pushing them to the top of the list he keeps adding to of hats I MUST make for him. lol  He apparently wants one of everything I make. Auntie Niki to the rescue. :)

*These features will work on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following:  switch to hdc for this step instead of dc as pattern calls for above.

Smile: Using black contrast yarn
Make 1 chain of  18 ch and leave tail to sew this main part of the smile in to place when assembling beanie hat.
Make 1 chain of 5 ch and leave tail of yarn to sew the sides of the smile in to place on each end of the smile chain from previous step. Put to side until needed during assembly.

*These features will work on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following: For main smile piece : Ch 12 instead of 18.  For smile sides, ch 2 instead of 5.

Nose Pieces (make 2): using white main color yarn
Row 1:  Ch 7. Place 1 dc in third ch from hook and 1 dc in each of the following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn.  (5 dc)

Row 4: Sc in first st, hdc in next st, dc in third st, hdc in next st, and sc in last st. Cut yarn, pull through and fasten off.(5 st total)

Place 2 sc in each of these 5 st before proceeding down other side of nose to corner with 1 sc in each st again.  When you reach bottom corner, cut yarn and fasten off.  You should have the 5 st at the base of the nose unworked with black like as seen in my pictures.

Ear Fronts (Make 2): using main color white yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 2 before placing 12 dc.  Pull the circle closed to line up in tight circle. Sl st in to top of 1st st. (12 dc)

Ear Back (Make 2): using main color white yarn and black contrast yarn for last round
Repeat rounds 1-2 of Ear Fronts in previous step but do not fasten off at end of round 2.  You want to leave a long enough tail at start of Round 1 of the Ear Backs so that you can sew the ears on to place on hat during assembly process.
Placing one ear front in front of your ear back you are working on, continue working the following through both pieces at same time.
Round 3:  Attach black contrast yarn with a sl st in last st worked. Ch 1 before working 1 sc in first 6 st, then alternate 1 sc then 2 sc repeatedly until back at first st in round. Sl st in to top of 1st st in round.

Ch 9. Make 1 hdc in 3rd chain from hook and place 1 hdc in each of the following 6 ch. (7 hdc)
Make sure you leave a yarn tail that will be long enough to secure your hair on to Roderick’s head before you cut your yarn and pull it through. Place to side until needed during finishing off steps.
Repeat process for 2 other pieces of hair needed for pattern.

*These features will work on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following: Make a chain of 7 before making 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the following 5 ch.

Leave a tail long enough to sew eyebrows in place, cut yarn, pull through and put to side until needed in assembly.
Repeat process for second eyebrow.

*These features will work well on toddler to adult male hat sizes. For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do the following:
Make a ch of 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook and place 1 sc in each of the following 3 st. (4 sc)

Finishing off:
Since I like to start adding my features from the bottom up we will start with Diary of a Wimpy Kid Rodrick’s smile. I find that by working from bottom up you get a better idea of how much space you have during the process.  Otherwise you may find yourself scrunching up features at the bottom if you haven’t left enough space in your process. By working upwards you always have extra room as you can just move the next feature up a little higher if need be.
You are now going to use this the tail left on the large smile chain from before and your yarn needle to sew the main smile piece into the desired place on the hat.  (You can reference my pictures to see how I placed his smile my own hat in a lopsided grin.) Once you have secured it into place, bring the yarn into the inside of the beanie hat and finish off.
Now repeat this process to the smaller side smile chain on the right side to give his lopsided smile.
Next we will work on attaching the nose that was assembled previously.  Use the tail left behind and needle to secure the nose piece in place on to the beanie hat.  Pull yarn in to the inside of beanie once sewn on and fasten off.
Next we will work on the his eyes.  Take the yarn tail left from one eye and sew it into place on to the hat. Note that you want the oval of eyes to have the narrow sides on top and bottom whereas the long ends facing sides.  Once it’s sewn on, pull yarn in to the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat for second eye.
Now that your eyes are in place, take the tail from one eyebrow and your yarn needle to to secure it in place over one eye. Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of beanie before fastening off.  Repeat process for second eyebrow.
Now you need to attach Rodrick’s ears on to the beanie.  Sew each of the ears in place by using the leftover yarn tail from when you crocheted the ears before directly on to the top sides of the beanie in your desired position.  Once secure, pull yarn in to inside of your hat before finishing off.  Repeat process for second ear.
Picking up one of Rodrick’s pieces of hair you created before, use the tail left and yarn needle to secure them in to place on the top of the beanie hat.  I centered my middle hair right in the 1st Round circle on my own beanie hat but you can place it in your desired location to best fit your hat.  Once the hair has been securely sewn on, pull yarn into the inside of the hat before finishing off. Repeat process with second and third hair, positioning them on either side of your middle hair.
Check for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any. I would love to see your version if you make one, just drop me a line. :) All done now!

I saw a stuffed toy awhile back that had the cutest sleeping bunny face.  I wish I could remember where I saw it. It was so adorable. Unfortunately I screwed up on the eyelashes and it didn’t turn out as clean looking as I wanted. I may switch to embroidery thread if I make another but here is the pattern to my design.

I don’t have a toddler sized head model so I apologize for not having the usual 3D pictures of how it looks worn from different angles.  I actually made this one for my niece to wear on Easter and just got around to typing it up.

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Toddler Sized (Age 1 – 3 Years Old) Double Crochet Beanie Pattern which you can find here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: in main color white yarn
Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice. The hat in these pictures are of the Toddler size of my Easy Peasy double crochet beanie pattern set.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to start on making your Chibi Sleeping Bunny hat. :)

Eye Lines (Make 2): using black yarn
Make a chain of 10.
Repeat for second eye line. Place to the side until needed for assembly.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sized beanie hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a chain of  7 instead of a chain of 10 as step calls for.

Eyelashes (Make 8): using black yarn
Make a chain of 4.
Leave a short tail long enough to secure the eyelash in place during assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through.  Place eyelash to the side until needed in assembly.
Repeat process for the rest of the eyelashes required.
*Note: You may want to opt to skip the crocheted eyelashes and try out some embroidery thread if yours aren’t coming out right. I’m not happy with how mine came out exactly so I will be trying the embroidery thread on next one requiring eyelashes.*

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sized beanie hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make eyelashes of 2 ch each instead of the of ch 4 step calls for.

Ear Front (Make 2): using pink contrast color yarn
Row 1: Ch 5, 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook and place 1 dc in each of the following 2 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (3 dc)
Row 2-3: Place 1 dc in first st and each st across. Ch 2 and turn. (3 dc)
Row 4: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in next 2 st across. Ch 2 and turn. ( 4 dc)
Row 5: Place 2 dc in 1st st and 1 dc in next 3 st across. Ch 2 and turn.  (5 dc)
Row 6-7: Place 1 dc in 1st st and each of the next 4 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 8:  Make 1 dc in 2nd st skipping 1st st in round, 1 dc in next st and dctog last two st in row. Ch 1 and turn. ( 3 dc)
Row 9:  Place 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping first st and sl st into next st.  (1 sc and 1 sl st)
Fasten off and put down ear front until ready to attach to ear back.
Repeat process for second ear.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sized beanie hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, skip rounds 5, 10, 11 and 12.

Ear Back (Make 2): using pink contrast color yarn
Repeat Rows 1-9 from Ear Front step above but do leave a long enough tail of yarn at the beginning of your project to be able to sew your ears once assembled on to the beanie hat and do not fasten off at the end of Row 9 like with the ear fronts.
Row 10:  Place one finished Ear Front in front of the Ear Back you are working on. Working through both pieces at once, ch 1 before placing 3 sc in both of the sc from previous round, continue working a round of 1 sc in each st around the perimeter with 3 sc in each corner when working around until you reach 1st st in round. Sl st in to the top of 1st st. The 3 sc in top of ear curve and bottom corners will give the ear a more rounded appearance.
Fasten off.  You should still have the tail from beginning of ear back that you will use during finishing steps. Place assembled ear to the side until needed.
Repeat process for second ear.

Bow Main Piece: using pink yarn
Row 1: Ch  6 before placing  1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and place 1 hdc  in each of the following  3 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 2: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked and 1 hdc in each  of the next 2 st across. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 3: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked and 1 hdc in the next st. Ch 1 and turn. (2 hdc)
Row 4: Place 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc  in next st. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sc)
Row 5:  Place 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc  in next st. Ch 2 and turn. (2 sc)
Row 6: Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc  in next st. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 7: Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in next 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 8: Working around the perimeter from where you left off in Row 7, work 1 sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in to corners to give a more rounded look before sl st back in to the top of the 1st st in round.
Fasten off. You don’t need to leave a tail on this feature as you will be using tail from bow center to secure this piece on to the beanie hat during assembly. Put to side for now.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sized beanie hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, do the following instead:
Row 1: Ch 5 before placing  1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook and place 1 hdc  in each of the following  2 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 2: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st leaving 1st st unworked and 1 hdc in each of the next 2 st across. Ch 1 and turn. (2 hdc)
Row 3: Place 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc  in next st. Ch 1 and turn. (2 sc)
Row 4:  Place 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc  in next st. Ch 2 and turn. (2 sc)
Row 5: Place 2 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc  in next st. Ch 1 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 6: Working around the perimeter from where you left off in Row 7, work 1 sc in each st around, placing 3 sc in to corners t

Bow Circle Center: using pink yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 8 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle closed tightly. Sl st in top of 1st st in round. (8 hdc)
Make sure you leave an extra long tail on your bow circle as you will be using it to secure bow circle on center of bow main piece and then securing assembled bow on to the beanie during finishing steps before you cut the yarn and pull through. Put to side until needed in assembly.

*This feature works well on toddler to adult male sized beanie hats.  For newborn to 12 month sized hats, make a circle of  8 sc instead of 8 hdc as step calls for above.

Finishing off:
Starting from the bottom up, use the tail on one eye chain and yarn needle to sew the eye line in place.  Once your it is secured, pull yarn to inside of hat before finishing off. You can reference the picture above to see how I placed my own.
Next you want to use the tail from one eyelash and your yarn needle to sew the eyelash in to the proper place you desire or the closed sleeping eye affect. You can reference my pictures as to where I placed them on my own bunny hat.  Once sewn on, pull yarn to inside of hat and finish off.  Repeat this process for the rest of the bunny’s eyelashes.
Using the tail left behind on one of the bunny ears, use your yarn needle to secure the ear to the top area of the beanie in desired location with the contrast on hat. You can see my pictures for where I placed my own. You want to place them side by side like in my pictures if you want them to stay upright with the bow. I even stitched up a few st up the middle of the ears, anchoring them together to help them stay upright.  If you prefer a floppy ear look move slightly forward and apart on hat. They will flop forward on their own.  Once you have it in place, pull your yarn in to the inside of the beanie before finishing off extra length.  Repeat this process for the second ear.
Using tail from your bow center and yarn needle, sew your center in the middle of your main bow piece. Once securely in place, use rest of tail to anchor bow at base of your two ears as I did in my picture.
Now check over your crochet project for any tails or ends that you may have missed in process to weave in and finish off. Do so if you find any.

Here are some of the pictures I took to show how this chibi sleeping bunny character hat looks like once completed:
