Pompompurin, who is called Purin for short, is a golden retriever dog character first introduced by Sanrio, the creators of Hello Kitty, in 1996 . He is mostly depicted wearing his chocolate brown beret and with a curling smile on his face but you can find tons of images with him having different expressions if you want to change it up for your own beanie. He is also often found with the adorable Muffin (a little hamster friend), Scone ( a little mouse friend) and even a little bird friend.

Pompompurin “Purin” the Sanrio Dog Character Hat Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
Dark Cream Yarn for Beanie Hat (main color)
(I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
Medium to Dark Brown Yarn for contrast trim, beret / topper, and features
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends
small amount of fiberfill stuffing for beret topper (optional)

Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US) 
hdc- half double crochet (US) 

Pattern Instructions:

Hat Base: in main color dark cream or light yellow yarn and contrast medium to dark brown colored yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

We will start with the contrast medium to dark brown yarn for beginning of hat to create Purin’s beret look:
Beret – make first 4 rounds (first 3 rounds from pattern for newborn to 12 month sizes) in dark brown yarn from Easy Peasy pattern of your desired size as pattern calls for.
Insert Row 1: Insert in to easy peasy pattern 1 round of sc done in stitch pattern that easy peasy pattern calls for following row in front loops only. Fasten off  brown yarn.
Insert Row 2: Now sl st with dark cream or light yellow yarn on unworked back loop from previous row. Work one round of 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to top of 1st st in round.
Now resume pattern as how row 5 (row 4 for infant sizes) calls for from pattern not counting your insert rounds in your round total. Go ahead and work rest of hat as easy peasy pattern calls for in instructions.
Fasten off.
*Note: My beret insert Row 1 gave a flippy look when finished with the lip of the beret sticking out a bit. If you don’t like this look you can make Row 1 just another round of 1 sc each around in front loops only so it will lay more flat. Another option is to just create the beret as a separate piece as above instructions call for and just do one insert row of 1 sc around instead of above before sewing your beret on top of completed beanie.
Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to move on to creating the rest of your Purin hat.

Ear Front: using dark cream or light yellow yarn
Row 1: Ch 5, 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 dc in next ch, and 2 dc in remaining ch. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 2: Place 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in each of the following 3 st, and 2 dc in last st in row. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 3-5: Place 1 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 6 st. Ch 2 and turn. (7 dc)
Row 6: Place 1 dc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the following 5 st. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)
Row 7: Place 1 dc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 dc)
Row 8: Place 1 dc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 dc in each of the following 3 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 dc)
Row 9: Place 1 dc in 1st st and in each of the following 3 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 dc)
Row 10: 1 dc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in following and sl st in last st. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 11: 1 sc in sc from previous row skipping sl st, 1 hdc in next st and 1 dc in last st. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 12: Place 1 dc in 1st st and sl st in next.
Fasten off.
Repeat for second ear.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
Row 1: Ch 3, 3 hdc in 3rd ch from hook. Ch 2 and turn. (3 hdc)
Row 2: Place 2 hdc in 1st st, 1 hdc in each of the following st, and 2 hdc in last st in row. Ch 2 and turn. (5 hdc)
Row 3-5: Place 1 hdc in 1st st and in each of the following 4 st. Ch 2 and turn. (5 hdc)
Row 6: Place 1 hdc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 hdc in each of the following 3 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 7: Place 1 hdc in 1st st and in each of the following 3 st. Ch 2 and turn. (4 hdc)
Row 8: 1 dc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in following and sl st in last st. Ch 1 and turn.
Row 9: 1 sc in sc from previous row skipping sl st, 1 hdc in next st and 1 dc in last st. Ch 2 and turn.
Row 10: Place 1 dc in 1st st and sl st in next.
Fasten off.
Repeat for second ear.

Ear Backs and assembly (Make 2): using dark cream or light yellow yarn
Repeat Rows 1 -12 from Ear Front above but do not fasten off at end of Row 12. Place one Ear Front lined up stitch to stitch in front of your Ear Back you are working on.
Row 12: Ch 1 and turn. Working through both pieces work 1 sc in each st down edge of ear. When you reach the original 5 st from Row 1, place 2 sc in each of those 5 st, before resuming 1 sc in each st up the side until at st you started round at placing an additional 2 sc in same st.
Leave long tail to attach to side of Purin’s head before cutting yarn, pulling through and placing assembled ear to side until needed for assembly.
Repeat for second ear but Ch 1 and turn at start of assembly before lining up your ear front in front of the ear back so that when you attach the ears both with have ears with the good side of your sc round facing forward. 🙂

Beret Topper Piece: using dark brown yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing 6 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 5 st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (7 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 6 st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Round 4: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 7 st around. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round. (9 sc)
Leave tail long enough to be able to attach your beret topper piece in place on top of your beanie hat during assembly before you cut the yarn. Pull yarn through and place to side until needed during assembly process in finishing steps.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:

Eyes (Make 2): using medium to dark brown contrast yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc in the circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Leave tail long enough to attach eye during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until needed in finishing steps.
Repeat for second eye.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
 Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing 4 sc in the circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st in top of the 1st st in round. (4 sc)

Nose: using medium to dark brown contrast yarn
Row 1: Ch 6 before placing 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the following 4 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (5 sc)
Row 2: Place 1 sc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 dc in next, 1 hdc in following st, 1 sc in last st, sl st back into last st. Ch 1 and turn. (5 st total)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st, 2 hdc in next st, 1 sc in following st and sl st in last st.
Leave tail long enough to attach nose during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until needed in finishing steps.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
 Row 1: Ch 4 before placing 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of the following 2 ch. Ch 1 and turn. (3 sc)
Row 2: Place 1 sc in 1st st, 1 hdc in next st, 1 sc in last st, sl st back into last st. Ch 1 and turn. (3 st total)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st and sl st in last st.
Leave tail long enough to attach nose during assembly before cutting yarn, pulling through and put to side until needed in finishing steps.

Mouth lines: using medium to dark brown contrast yarn
Ch 13, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 2 ch. Ch 9.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through.

*The above feature works well with toddler, youth, preteen, teen womens and men sized hats.  For newborn to 12 month hat sizes, do following instead of above steps:
Ch 9. Make a sl st in 2nd ch from and next ch. Ch 6.
Leave a long enough tail to be able to sew the mouth lines in place on your Purin hat during assembly before you cut yarn, pull through. 

Finishing off:
Starting with the nose, take the yarn tail from your nose and your yarn needle to sew Purin’s nose in desired location on hat. I made my own just a little under halfway mark of rounds down in cream color, not counting the beret rounds in number but feel free to play around with your own but make sure you will have enough room to add your mouth lines. Once you have secured the nose fully in place, pull yarn to the inside of the beret and fastening off.
Now taking tail left at end of the mouth lines, use your yarn needle to sew the mouth lines in shape of your preference I did the curly “W” shape I found in many of Purin’s pictures (You can see this in my pictures and Purin image near top of pattern for reference). Once you have his mouth secured in place, pull yarn to inside of the beanie and fasten off.
Next up take the tail from one of his eyes and using your yarn needle sew the eye to one side of the face area of your beanie. Again once secure, pull yarn to inside of beret before fastening off yarn. Repeat for second eye.
All that is left now is attaching Purin’s assembled ears from pattern instructions above. Using your yarn needle and the tail left on one ear, sew it in desired place on side of beanie a little under the beret. You want to attach it by the / side of the top of the ear created by the st decrease of last few rows attaching it in a vertical manner. This is help your ears keep front facing ear appearance instead of hanging or floppy ears. Once you have the ears sewn in place, pull yarn to inside of hat. I like to reinforce the joining of large features, like ears, with a few more stitches on inside but it’s not necessary. Once done, fasten off. Repeat for the second ear.
Now just take the time to check over your work to see if there are any yarn tails or loose ends you may have missed before.  If you find any, go ahead and fasten them off now.
