Shrek Ear Costume Beanie Hat Free Crochet Pattern long image

I couldn’t resist making this Shrek Ear hat for one of my nephew’s birthday.  It’s a fun and easy beginner friendly crochet project.  I think if I make another I will use less stuffing so they don’t look so full.  I can’t wait to see how he likes this and what it looks like on top of his cute head. :) I may have to make the baby girl ogre in to a hat for my little niece and more of this for my other wonderful nephews.

Pattern Instructions:

*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

The hat in this picture is made with my free Easy Peasy Youth Sized (Age 3-10 years old) Double Crochet Beanie  Hat Pattern which you can find  here as a foundation for the project. Want it in another size? No worries. Head over to Easy Peasy All Family Sizes Free Double Crochet Beanie Patterns to select the size of the free pattern you want for your project.

Hat Base: using bright green yarn

Use Easy Peasy Crochet Beanie Size of your choice

Once you have completed your beanie for the base you are ready to transform your beanie into an ogre worthy hat. :)

Ear topper (Make 2): using bright green yarn
This part of the feature is attached near the top of the ear during ear process to create a closed pocked for the fiberfill stuffing to keep it from falling out.
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 2 before placing 10 hdc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Cut yarn, pull through last loop on hook and fasten off.
Repeat above process for second ear topper.

The above feature size works well on toddler to adult male sized hats. For smaller features on toddler hat and all infant sized hats, use the following instructions instead:
Round 1: In a magic circle, ch 1 before placing 8 sc in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Cut yarn, pull through last loop on hook and fasten off.
Repeat above process for second ear topper.

Ear (Make 2): using bright green yarn and finished ear toppers from previous step
Important note: Since we are working from the bottom up for the ears, you want to start off with a length of yarn being unused at the start of your project so you can sew it in place on the hat to secure it during assembly.
Round 1: After leaving a yarn tail at start of project, in a magic circle ch 2 before placing 10 hdc st in to the circle. Pull the circle tightly closed. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Round 2: For this round you will work BLO (back loops only). Ch 1before placing 1 sc in the BL of 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 9 st around in BLO. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 sc)
Rounds 3-6: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 9 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 hdc)
Now take the time to lightly stuff the Shrek ear before you close it off in the next round. You don’t want to overstuff it as it will make the surrounding area sag from the weight or bunch up. I normally just put in enough so it will retain its desired shape but not be heavy.
Rounds 7: Now line up one of your finished ear toppers with opening. For this round you will work through both the stitch from previous round and a matching st from the topper. Ch 1 before working 2 sc in 1st st (through both pieces) and proceed to place 2 sc in each st around in same fashion for following 9 st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (20 sc)
Round 8: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 19 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (20 sc)
Fasten off.
Repeat above process for the second Shrek ear.

The above feature size works well on toddler to adult male sized hats. For smaller features on toddler hat and all infant sized hats, use the following instructions instead:
Round 1: After leaving a yarn tail at start of project, in a magic circle ch 1 before placing 8 sc st in to the circle. Pull the circle tightly closed. Sl st in the top of the back loop of 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Round 2: For this round you will work BLO (back loops only). Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in the BL of 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 7 st around in BLO. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 sc)
Rounds 3-4: Ch 2 before placing 1 hdc in 1st st and 1 hdc in each of the following 7 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (8 hdc)
Now take the time to lightly stuff the Shrek ear before you close it off in the next round. You don’t want to overstuff it as it will make the surrounding area sag from the weight or bunch up. I normally just put in enough so it will retain its desired shape but not be heavy.
Rounds 5: Now line up one of your finished ear toppers with opening. For this round you will work through both the stitch from previous round and a matching st from the topper. Ch 1 before working2 sc in 1st st (through both pieces) and proceed to place 2 sc in each st around in same fashion for following 7 st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (16 sc)
Round 6: Ch 1 before placing 1 sc in 1st st and 1 sc in each of the following 15 st around. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (16 sc)
Fasten off.
Repeat above process for the second Shrek ear.

Hat Assembly:
Taking the yarn tail from one of the completed shrek ears, use your yarn needle to sew the ear in place on one top side of the beanie hat. You can see my pictures to see where I placed mine if you are looking for some guidance. I tried to make mine as close as possible to Shrek images. Once you have sewn it in place, pull your yarn to the inside of the beanie hat. At this point I normally reinforce any large or upright features for my hats with a second set of stitches on the inside. It’s not a necessary step but I do recommend it. Once you have the ear secure in place, fasten off in the inside of the beanie hat.
Now you will repeat this process with the second Shrek ear making sure you are placing it in a mirror image location of the previous one so they are symmetrical.
Once both ears are attached, double check your work to make sure you don’t have any loose end or tails that you missed during assembly process. If you find any, fasten them off now.
All done! Super easy but fun Shrek hat. I can’t wait to see what my nephews think about them.
