Happy Cupcake Applique Crochet Pattern
free crochet pattern from cRAfterChick.com
Even though I don’t eat sugar for health reasons, I can’t resist the cuteness of cupcakes. I’ve been making a lot of cupcake themed projects as of late so I had to make a fun little applique to use on some of my projects. That is how the happy cupcake came to be. I may have made a few squee noises over it when I was finishing it up. I already have plans for this one to go on my Kindle case I recently crocheted. 🙂
I did make a cute little set on the same day of this cupcake, a happy chocolate chip cookie, a happy icecream cone and a cute but silly monkey face. Here is a picture below of the little set all together.
Happy Cupcake Applique Crochet Pattern
Project requires:
Pink yarn for frosting top
Tan or light brown yarn for cake color (I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)

“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends
Abbreviations used in this pattern (US crochet stitches):
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet (US)
sctog – single crochet two stitches together (US)
Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe
Bottom cake part: using tan or light brown yarn
Row 1: Ch 8. In 3rd ch from hook place 1 dc and 1 dc in each of the next 5 ch. Ch 2 and turn. (6 dc)
Row 2: Make 2 dc in 1st st, 1 dc in next 4 st and 2 dc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (8 dc)
Row 3: Place 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following 7 st across. (8 sc)
Leave a tail long enough to attach to be able to sew on the cake part of your cupcake applique on to your project. Leaving tail, cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until finishing steps.
Frosting top: using pink yarn
Row 1: Sl st to top of cake base where you left off. Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc in each of the following 6 st and 2 sc in last st. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc)
Row 2: Make 1 sc in 1st st and each of the following 9 st across. Ch 1 and turn. (10 sc)
Row 3: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 sc in each of the following 6 st, and sctog last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (8 sc)
Row 4: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 sc in each of the following 4 st, and sctog last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (6 sc)
Row 5: Make 1 sc in 2nd st, skipping 1st st in row, 1 sc in each of the following 2 st, and sctog last 2 st. Ch 1 and turn. (4 sc)
Row 6: Ch 1 but do not turn like previous rounds. Work 1 sc in each st down side of cupcake frosting. Place 3 sc in bottom corner *ch 2, sc in next st* repeating across to other bottom corner of frosting placing 3 sc in corner. Work 1 sc in each st up last side of frosting until you reach 1st st in round. Sl st in to the top of 1st st in round.
Leave a tail long enough to attach to be able to sew on the frosting part of your cupcake applique on to cake bottom of your cupcake and then on to your project. Leaving tail, cut yarn and pull through. Put to side until finishing steps.
Cherry on top: using red yarn
Round 1: In magic circle, ch 1 before placing 10 sc in to the circle. Pull circle closed. Sl st in to the top of the 1st st in round.
Leave a tail long enough to attach to frosting top with a few stitches and be able to sew on the cherry part of your applique on to your project before cutting yarn. Pull through yarn and place to side until needed in assembly.
Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn
Make a ch of 4. Sl st in to the last ch from hook. Leave a tail long enough to sew on to your cupcake before cutting and pulling through yarn. Put to side until needed in assembly. Repeat for second eye.
Mouth: using black yarn
Leave out a small amount of black yarn to freehand stitch on smile during finishing steps.
Finishing off:
Using the tail from one of your cupcake’s eyes and your yarn needle, sew your eye in to desired place. You can reference my pictures on where I placed mine on my cupcake. Once secure in place, pull yarn to back of applique before fastening off. Repeat for second eye.
Using the small amount of black yarn you set aside for the freehand smile, use your needle to freehand stitch on your smile where you want it. I just did a simple smile but feel free to play around with what you like best. Once done, pull yarn to back and fasten off.
Taking the tail from your cherry and yarn needle, attach your cherry to top of your frosting top with a few stitches. I just use a simple back and forth. Do not cut remaining tail.
You should have three tails left:
1. Red yarn tail for cherry
2. Brown or tan yarn tail for cake base
3. Pink or desired frosting color yarn tail for frosting top.
Why three tails? You will be using each one to attach that color of the applique on to your project. Otherwise you will have contrasting colored stitches.
Now all you have left to do is figure out what project you want to attach your happy cupcake applique too! The sky is the limit. When you know where you are going to put it, just simply use the tail from the part of the cupcake that matches to secure it to project, pull yarn to back and fasten off. Repeat with other two tails.
All done. 🙂
