Easy Girly Skull with Bow Applique Crochet Pattern

Yeah I needed more skulls and cute a girly skull as well.  I love skulls on almost anything. :) This was just a simple upgrade to the Easy Unisex Skull Applique Crochet Pattern which you can see here.  I decided to add the bow to because I wear shoes most of the time that have a similar bow on the skull on them as well. Told you I wear a lot of skulls..  This is a very quick and small project to make to upgrade or personalize almost any project.  It is beginner friendly so give it a try. Happy crafting!

Easy Girly Skull with Bow Applique Crochet Pattern Notes

Project requires:
(I use a lot of Red Heart Saver yarn but any medium to normal weight yarn will do)
White or desired main color yarn for skull base
Black or desired contrast color yarn for features on skull
Raspberry yarn or desired contrast color 2 yarn
“J” hook (6.0 mm)
Scissors or Yarn Cutter
Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle to weave in ends

Abbreviations used in this pattern:
ch – chain
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet (US)
dc – double crochet  (US)

Pattern Instructions:
*Note: This project is worked in the round on the base of a magic ring. If you do not know how to do this, please see tutorial here from: yarntomato on CrochetMe

Skull Base: using white yarn or desired main color yarn
Round 1: In a magic circle using your white (or desired main color) yarn, ch 2 before placing 10 dc st in to the circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (10 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1 before placing 2 sc in 1st st and 2 sc in each of the following 6 st, ch 2 before making 2 dc in next 2 st, ch 1 and place 2 sc in last st. Sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (20 st total= 4 dc and 16 sc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew the finished applique in place once fully assembled before cutting yarn and pulling through last loop on hook. Place to side until needed in finishing process.

Eyes (Make 2): using black yarn or desired contrast color
Round 1: Using black yarn (or desired contrast color yarn) ch 1 before working 5 sc st in a magic circle. Pull circle tightly closed and sl st in the top of the 1st st in round. (5 sc)
Leave a long enough yarn tail to be able to sew the eye in place during assembly before cutting yarn and pulling through last loop on hook. Place to side until needed in finishing process.
Repeat above process for second eye.

Nose: using black yarn
Make a large knot and leave short yarn tail before cutting yarn. You will use this yarn tail to secure the nose in desired place on your skull applique.

Bow: using contrast yarn color 2 (mine is raspberry color from Red Heart like in pictures)
Row 1: Chain 7 before placing 1 sc in 4th ch from hook, place 1 sl st in each of the following 2 ch, 1 sc in last ch, ch 3 and sl st in to bottom of last sc worked.
Leave an extra long tail before cutting yarn and pulling through last loop on hook.  You will now pull yarn to back of bow before wrapping several times around center and double knot to secure wrapping in back.  Place to side until ready to attach to your skull applique during assembly.

Assembly and Finishing Steps:
Taking the yarn tail left on one of your eyes and using your Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle sew the eye securely in desired location on skull base.  I placed mine just to the inside of the outer rim to use it as a measure to make sure mine were even but you can play around with the placement.  Once you have sewn it in place, pull yarn to the back side of the applique and fasten off.  Repeat process for the second eye.
Now take the yarn tail left on nose and secure it in desired place.  A knot or two or even a few stitches with the yarn needle are more than enough to do this job.   Fasten off.
Last but not least we are adding this cute girl skull’s bow. I like mine off to the side but it looks cute centered on top of skull as well so feel free to switch it up. :)   I just secured mine with two double knots on the back of the project but you can use your yarn needle to sew it in place if you so desire.
All done! Now you have a completed girly skull with bow applique! There should only be on yarn tail left and that’s the extra long yarn tail in main color from the applique’s skull base. You will use this with to fix the applique on to the project of your choice when ready.

Attaching Applique to Project:
Do you have a project ready for an applique? Then you are ready for this step. All you will need to do is again use the Blunt large eye yarn / tapestry needle and the yarn tail left on the applique to secure it in place on your desired project location. I normally just attached with a basic in and out stitch near perimeter of applique so ends don’t curl up and a few stitches near the center to keep it from bubbling up later on after multiple washings. Once you have sewn your applique in place, pull the yarn to the backside or inside (depending on your project) and fasten off. That’s it. :)

Here is a picture to show how this applique turned out when I put it on my desired project (hat):
